Bites: The past and future of WC, 'The most beautiful watch in the world' and does WR count in beer?

Happy Tuesday everyone!

I'm back from the family Easter break to Prague and looking forward to chatting with you all again, and its even more exciting now that we have the WatchCrunch App! I know the smart coding Crunchers behind the scenes at WC have been working hard on this for ages, so it's great to see it go live.

While I was on holiday, as is generally the way with this obsession, watches were seldom off my mind for long, and with Prague being such a captivating city it had me contemplating the deep questions of the watch world.

What makes a design timeless?

How do we judge the beauty of a watch?

And most importantly... does water resistance count if it's beer rather than water?

Prague has a multitude of Beer Spas, offering 'unlimited beer, fun and massages' and a dip in a beer filled jacuzzi. (Don't judge! You'd all try it too!).

Image

I have to admit that I did chicken out and take my watch off, despite its 100m WR, because I wasn't quite sure how it would cope with bubbles, alcohol and fermentation... Was I overly cautious? Did I miss an awesome opportunity to add some cool beer related patina to my bronze Flieger??

Anyway, let's see what you have all been up to while I've been away and you can tell me if you agree on the most beautiful watch in the world...

The epic spring microbrands tournament came to its conclusion with Formex being crowned this years winner.

Gerald Genta will be resurrected next year. Should we be excited?

I love a YouTube video with a bit of genuine banter between presenters, so really enjoyed this vid by our own @The_Timist. He and his wife give their take on the Watches and Wonders releases. Not a quick watch, but a fun one!

“Is this the most beautiful watch in the world?”

The old town in Prague is just such a stunningly beautiful place and doesn't appear to have lost any of its appeal over the hundreds of years its beautiful buildings have been standing.

This had me contemplating how we judge beauty in the watch world.

The basic answer to 'What is a beautiful watch?' is always going to be that it is in the eye of the beholder, but are there any basic elements of watch design that the majority can agree on as being 'beautiful'? Or does personal and cultural diversity mean that there is no watch in existence that the majority would look at and say "Yes, that is beautiful"?

When I was thinking about this, I did a Google to see if the internet could tell me what I should be considering beautiful. There weren't many discussions out there that I could find (probably because it's considered just too subjective a topic).

I even asked ChatGPT its opinion on the most beautiful watch:

"As an AI language model, I don't have personal preferences or emotions, so I cannot determine which watch is the most beautiful in the world. Beauty is subjective and varies depending on personal taste and preferences. There are many luxury watch brands that are known for their exquisite designs, such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and many others. Ultimately, the most beautiful watch is the one that speaks to you and fits your personal style and needs."

It was obviously staying firmly on the fence.

I did find one article from Time and Tide where they spoke to Jean-Claude Biver about his watch collection.

Who?

I hadn't heard of him either.

Apparently, he is a mastermind watch entrepreneur who made successes of Blancpain, Omega and Hublot. They refer to him as a 'horological superhero' and as you can imagine, he has a pretty stunning collection of time pieces (check out the article to see his collection).

However, there is one he considers the most beautiful, and of which he says:

“There are some pieces I bought for the history and then there are some pieces I bought for my eyes. For the beauty, the exceptional beauty! ... When I see it now, it is just a miracle. I think it’s the most beautiful watch I have ever seen. I think that even today, now when I see it. The colour of the dial is just amazing.”

He is talking about the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Reference 1518.

Image

Now, obviously, I can only comment on what I see in pictures, which I do realise can be a million miles away from how a watch is experienced on the wrist, but am I convinced this watch is more beautiful than a small seconds Calatrava? I'm not so sure.

But I couldn't even give you the criteria of what a beautiful watch is for me.

Initially I thought that the truly beautiful pieces are the simplest, but the stunning Omega Chronoscope disproves this.

I can't say that it's the intricate movement that makes a watch beautiful because I am equally enamoured with the Cartier quartz collections.

And the other bizarre thing about beautiful watches?

Beauty alone is not enough... and this is coming from someone who really doesn't care about a watch’s insides!

The Cartier Santos, the Rolex 1908, the JLC Reverso... all heartbreakingly beautiful... and yet none of them are currently on my 'list'.

I couldn't even tell you why not, but obviously there is just that indescribable spark that is missing.

So, what do you think is the most beautiful watch in the world?

Do you judge beauty based purely on aesthetics or is sentiment an overriding factor?

Is beauty enough to tempt you?

Take care watch fam!

Kaysia.

Great post as always! Your thoughts on beauty really have me thinking. I don't know what to say, I've sat thinking about something snappy to say, but I just can't.

Image

Take my Lucerne Digital Jump Hour as an example. It's not beautiful by any normal standard, but it seems to have reached such levels of quirkiness and avant garde design that it appears beautiful, or somewhat intriguing. I think beauty might have something to do with experiences and other nonsense locked up in our neurons that we'll never be able to figure out the cause of it. The Golden Ratio is as close as we can get, because I don't think anything designed with those proportions has come out ugly. As for the most beautiful watch in the world, I'd like to say the Omega Aqua Terra and Constellation lines. It's a little plain to some, but I think they're both neat and examples of well executed simplicity.

Sorry, but that really sounds like a waste of beer to me.

As far as Prague is concerned, I spent some of the happiest days of my life there, and learned that I cannot go back.

Woohoo! Highly appreciate being one of the photo winners. Thanks and here's a quick video of the actual experience 😎

To have my post featured here is an honor to me, but you've really outdone yourself; talented AND knowledgeable? I feel a sense of impostor syndrome to be included in such an esteemed group. Thank you for feeling I have worthily contributed to this great community.

As far as a most beautiful watch in the world? One could be excused for thinking my answer would be the Speedy (I certainly share my lust for it often enough). While it is beautiful, I do not know that it is the most beautiful watch in the world. The Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Reference 1518 you mention certainly has to be in the conversation, but there is absolutely no way I could actually pick just one as the most beautiful. There are so many choices available and all of them would be as equally deserving as the Patek.

My opinion's going to change depending on the time of day, but right now I feel like this is one of the most beautiful watches out to date: AP's Code 11.59 Perpetual Calendar in rose gold.

·

Thanks for the great write up as usual. I don't think you should feel guilty about not taking your watch into the beer bath. I would not have taken my watch, not at all. I agree with you Prauge is a gorgeous city, historic and devoid of a lot of modern clutter as well (billboards etc...).

Regarding the most beautiful watch in the world I have two comments.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

"Love enters through the eye, and leaves through the eye"

Cheers!

Another great newsletter, thanks.

I’m grateful to be one of the photography competition winners. Although I suspect it is slightly cheating to win a photo comp not for the photo, but the text! 😁

Can’t say it’s THE most beautiful watch, but it’s definetely up there in my book. I had the pleasure to try it on last time in London.

Thanks a lot @Deeperblue to mention me and using my photo as the cover. 🙏

Very interesting read. I am somewhat in agreement with @Ryan_Schwartz that there must be some element of "the eye of the beholder" that applies outside pure aesthetics. I am not sure if it is aesthetically beautiful, but one of my watches that gets quite a bit of notice is Brown Lump, my 1977 Citizen CQ Solar Cell. I have heard it called cute, cool, quirky, nifty, and a number of other descriptions. It may not be aesthetically beautiful, but it certainly seems to be eye-catching.

Image

It was my wife that gave Brown Lump its name. She calls it an ugly brown lump of s**t, so she definitely disagrees with me on its appearance, because I think it is just strikingly beautiful. 🤣

Oh wow,a bath full of Budvar that sounds like heaven(did they provide straws).Personally wouldn't have worried about WR,100m is enough, mine survived a Cuban holiday when going into the pool, swam up to you swim up bar and overheard a guy telling his mates " I've sat here for four hours and haven't been to the Jon yet" yep fermentation doesn't even get close😱, needless to say my head never went under the water, the watch did though and survived.

'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' one of the oldest sayings out there, and one never more truer in the world of watches. But there are classics and we've all got our personal tastes from the aged faces on vintage to the gorgeous modern crafted faces on things like Grand Seikos. I keep seeing beutiful watches whether like recently in the flesh or on the screen and that's one of the aspects of this hobby I love. There's always something 'more', another hill to climb (in a good way), something else to take your breathe away and whilst that happens it keeps the interest up at ten, and the journey continues. It also helps when you can find beautiful watches at the more affordable end of the market from makers like Farer etc, where you can wear a lot of beauty for the price of a big weekend in the big city.

That beer spa sounds like a fun time 🍻

Glad you had a great time in Prague!

Thanks again Kaysia for your time and effort for this post.

I honestly feel like I'm just showcasing everyone else's hard work to be honest!

And yes, beer spa was awesome fun! 🍻

Well I do appreciate you. It would be a loss to this community without your contributions.

Hang in there.

Enjoy a 🍺

Best

One, welcome back. Two, another excellent write up.

Biver is an interesting character. He has been close to many very nice watches and several more misses. In this case, I have to agree with his take. To me, that look of the Patek is beautiful. Is it the most beautiful? That is subjective, there is so much beauty in the world, I have no idea what makes what qualifies as most. However, I am on the record that the 5270P to me is one of the best looking watches that I will likely never own. Obviously takes inspiration from the 1518, but in a more modern package. I'd go to a bear spa for the massage, but beer? 🤮 I've worn watches in hot tubs to no ill effect. While I've heard it said that hot water is bad for gaskets, others say they wear them in hot tubs in the shower as a matter of course. There's so much misinformation about water resistance it's impossible to know who to believe. Someone also said, don't use alcohol to clean a watch, because gaskets, but that hasn't been confirmed by anyone more authoritative, so I keep doing it anyway.

To me, Jean-Claude Biver's Patek is meh, not wow. I wouldn't sneeze at any high end Patek, but if I were to choose, it wouldn't be that one. Call me a philistine. To each his own. I'm bad at articulating why I like something, but for me, Grand Seiko in general ticks my boxes for beautiful. Their design language just speaks to me. They strike the right balance between dressy and sporty. Their dials are unique and draw my attention without being gaudy or pretentious (purple prose of their marketing notwithstanding).

Yes, I heard somewhere that steam is worse for a watch than water, so having a watch in a steamy shower room for example would be a bad idea. I have no clue if that's true though!

I think I definitely need to get hands on with some of these high-end pieces at some point.

I'll investigate the special department in Harrods that everyone talks about next time I'm in London.

One of my grails! Dimensions and proportions perfect, has the cute little moon phase, beautiful salmon color, very practical (perpetual calendar), movement is nicely finished. What more could you ask for besides a discount!

·

For me, this is pure sex. Rose gold and black contrast, the Roman numerals gives it a bit of class and mixes things up instead of pure baton indices, and of course somewhat arguably the most beautiful movement in the world. I'm happy to rebate this with anyone!

Beauty is emotion and passion. Beauty is spark and connection. Beauty is standards and logic. Beauty is criteria and preference. Beauty is intuitive and illogical. Beauty is objective and subjective. Beauty is personal and biased. "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder." What may be jaw dropping and "God tier" to one, can easily be jaw dropping "meh... ho-hum" and "anathema" to another. What is stunning to Jean-Claude Biver, can be so-so to Jean-Claude Van Damme or Justin Bieber. To each his own. No one... and I mean NO ONE... can ever say his or her appraisal or preference is better or superior than another. Beauty is perception and reality.

As always, cool article @Deeperblue 😎

Hehe... crazy can sometimes be my forte when sleep deprived, over caffeinated... or when Real Madrid win, or I win a new contract. 😜

Here's one last: "Wonder is in the eyes of the wearer." This line is hereby copyrighted as mine. 😎 Definitely beats any quote from Dick Van Dyke, Coenraad Johannes van Houten, or any similar sounding Van name. 😂

What makes a watch beautiful for me? I guess its your standard, conventional factors of the piece done well to make it more appealing.

I love watches with textured dials (AP Royal Oak, Seiko Presage Sharpe-edge, anOrdain model 1 fume etc). Texture would be one of the main factors that could grab my attention, as I remember in your last post of the new watch releases, the first watch my eyes shifted to was the Straum.

Dial proportion is also important. Cramming in too much detail in a watch kinda gives me a whole "messy" vibe. However, having some unorthodox features, such as asymmetry, would intrigue me, once again without going haywire with it.

Dial color. For me, some dial colors are more intriguing than others. Green is an amazing colour imo that I would like to mention. Dial color also depends on the style of watch, like, I tend to prefer Dive watches with some pop of color (Doxa does 'em very well).

Yeah, these are just a few of the factors I consider when selecting a "beautiful" watch, but to be honest, its a sensation one gets when he/she finds that watch. A sensation that just can't be described entirely.... (As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder)

Totally agree, 'messy' dial is definitely something that turns me off, but when done right... Just gorgeous...
