Bites: Someone explain 'Fun' to me.

Happy Tuesday fellow Crunchers!

This week I'm trying to get my head around the concept of 'Fun' in the watch world, as I just feel like my definition is different to everyone else's.

First, this week's WC fun and then let's chat.

"I need someone to explain 'fun' to me."

I hear people refer to Fun watches all the time, but I have yet to understand what actually constitutes a fun watch.

Is it supposed to be fun to wear? Fun to look at? Make me laugh?

And shouldn't all watches be fun away??

When I read through a couple of articles on fun watches they would often say 'A fun watch doesn't take itself too seriously', but what does that actually mean??

Help me figure some Fun Watch criteria.

Price?

So a lot of time people will refer to cheaper watches as the fun ones, such as this Snoopy Timex...

Image

But then other online articles have watches such as the bubbles Rolex on their lists of fun watches.

Image

Is price as a criteria depended on an individuals budget? Or is the Rolex fun even if it is mega bucks for the person buying?

Colours?

The Timex and Rolex both have bright colours in common, so is that the defining feature?

But then that can't be all there is to it, because look at some of the Invicta's....

Image

...and I don't think I ever hear people refer to Invicta's as fun.

Cartoon characters and pop culture?

I would say that without question if you stick snoopy or Mickey Mouse on a watch it automatically gets the 'fun' label, regardless of price.

Image

...but that can't be the only criteria, because the Moon and Pain Swatches get called fun too, without Disney's help...

Image

And none of these criteria explain why some watches DON'T get the fun badge, when in theory they should.

I've already mentioned Invicta, but what about Richard Mille?

Image

No one calls RM fun. But maybe it's hard to have fun with £3 million strapped to your wrist.... but then surely you are the one having ALL the fun if you can strap £3M to your wrist!

And then, strangely, no one ever talks about the watches on my personal Fun List. For example, the Omega Seamaster 007....

Image

I'd smile all day wearing that bad boy!

Or the Proplof...

Image

... A watch with serious specs but would just have me grinning every time I looked at it! And yet neither of these ever comes into anyone's fun list. So am I getting it wrong, or is 'fun' one of those super individual subjective qualities?

What are the criteria for a fun watch to you?

What's your favourite fun watch?

Share some pictures!

Take care everyone!

Kaysia.

This is the definition of “fun watch”…

Image

It’s as ugly as this…

Image

.. and less tasteful.

Which is precisely why I must have it!

you really should lighten up 😀

Fun is in the eye of the beholder, as you allude to in this post. It is an immeasurable quality as one person's fun might be another person's torture (see this year's Scav Hunt 😂). Fun watches can be a number of things, chiefly, how it relates to the person wearing it.

Personally, it wouldn't be fun wearing a $3M watch on my wrist, for fear of getting robbed. That's still a thing right?

To me, a fun watch is one that serves a purpose without me having the think or worry too much about it. Timex, Casio, and Seiko divers are fun. Or do I just lack imagination?😜

·

Heyyyyyyy alright! Thanks for the mention.

The GameBoy watch is AMAZING

·

Moonswatch Mission to Mars/Sun/Etc - fun!

Moonswatch Mission to Mercury - not fun because it's too close to the original... it's plastic, go crazy on the color!

Oris Pro Pilot Kermit - fun!

Rolex Kermit.... not so fun.

Mr. Jones Watches - very fun!

·

fun is a non sustainable emotion and wears off quickly as in too much of a good thing. Joy on the other hand is sustainable and long lasting. So what your looking for is a cotton candy watch you can wear for a thrill before going back to the watch you love to wear.

Fun, to me anyway, would indicate a couple things.

BrIght colors are generally seen as fun.

Cartoon characters remind us of our youth,, which most will agree represents a happier, carefree time in our lives.

You usually don't don a colorful Swatch or Snoopy dial to a formal or business setting, so the circumstances around wearing one tend to be more festive.

There's also a degree of not taking one's self too seriously, so Casios & Timex come in to play.

Along those lines, a cheaper watch will be appropriate for "fun" activities where a more expensive watch might incur expensive damage.

(I say this knowing full well some wear their pricier watches regardless since they were designed to handle it).

In the end though, as stated, fun can mean something different from one person to the next.

I do think we all can agree a Casio calculator watch is fun. Aways fun. 🤓

Just some thoughts.

And this is exactly the way to be, surely??? Why bother collecting if it isn't fun? Just buy your one watch and be done.

·

My Viagra watch was fun but I lost it. I had patients ask me if it made my arm stiff. It took a minute for that to register.

·

I personally find all watches to be enjoyable...except when there are issues and then they are not fun.

But I think "fun" here mainly refers to a level of not taking oneself too seriously and wearing a watch that would be the equivalent of wearing sneakers with a tuxedo.

So, this is what I would consider as fun watches...

Most of my watches are 'fun', that's why I buy them. Of course some styles lend themselves to be more fun than others, bit more colour, more out there designs. But it doesn't have stop with just the watch, do a strap change and quite a staid looking watch can be transformed into something quite different

'Upfunning' i call it.

Of course there's some you just totally wear for fun, bit like a hawaiian shirt

Image

(or a red dress, and thanks for sharing that on Tuesdays most read post😄)

Image

Like this the world's most useless gmt watch, but fun all the same. But don't let just style or genre stop you classifying any watch as a fun watch, its just a genre. Wear your vintage chrono to the game, a datejust on the beach make them fun, because that's what it's all about.

·

The watch you wear to a funeral is not a fun watch!

The watch you wear swimming, mountain biking, or skiing and also a watch that’s different than your serious watches is my fun watch.

·

"Fun" is individual to each person. Look at the post above mine to see an example of that...

When dealing with watches, "fun" is usually used to describe a watch that is not intended by the maker or the wearer to be seen as "serious". Lots of examples have been given so far, but here examples from my collection:

  1. Fun

Image

A colourful play on a watch designed for professional use, that is intended to look pretty, and not be used as a daily work watch.

2. Serious

Image

A watch designed to government specifications for Search and Rescue, and military dive usage. Designed to be durable and legible in complete darkness.

·

Thank you for the mention!! I'm a firm believer of making memories with your watches. The best watches come from the best people in your life and that has no price tag

Fun?

My thoughts- might, but doesn’t need to be a ‘high end’ watch, but can’t be too serious. Makes me smile when I wear it. Fun story. Some of my examples (one overlaps with your pick!)
