People noticing your watch

Almost never happens in my experience. I've had watches noticed and commented on in jewellers and other watch-savvy environments, but never out in the wild.

Today I took delivery of a Seiko SLA051J1 Willard and the first person I met in the street said "Wow, that's a nice watch, what is it?" An extended discussion about watches ensued.

A first.

You should move to London. It happens all the time. "Hay that's a nice watch. Now hand it over!" 🥺

·

I've had one noticed in over 50 years.

The "salesperson" at a Precision Time (remember them?) asked if my Omega Bond Seamaster was a Citizen.

No wonder they went out of business.

·

Last time that happened to me I was wearing my PRX at a high end restaurant and that waiter commented on it

·

I have a few that get noticed and complemented fairly often. My Doxas (most likely because of the colors) and Nivada CASD. Everything with a black dial may as well be nonexistent, though.

·

Once at the airport. Sitting next to a group of business people and one commented on my tissot. Damn just dawned on me the tissot again at a jeweler...... it's gotten all my comments

Glad I live in the US. They can speak to my 9mm.

Mostly incognito except my Speedy at work (from a new watch buddy who was wearing a Seiko LE Ginza 😍 at the time) and my Tudor BB GMT (Pepsi) which got noticed twice on the subway in NY.

Once from someone who asked if it was the Tudor GMT and said he was about to get the Blue BB 58 which sparked a nice watch conversation for 2 stops until I had to get off.

The second was someone who was passing through the car and stopped in front of me and asked if I was wearing a Rolex. I'm sure the question was innocent but I was never so happy to say NO, it's not. After taking another quick look, he moved along.

The Willard is a great looking watch. I get why it would be noticed.

Guns and watches!

Never.

OK, I went to a watchcrunch meetup last December, but that does not count in my book...

Even at my watchmaker, I got comments on the watches I was handing in for repair/service, but not on the watches I was wearing at the time.

·

Like a few others in this thread it's been my Speedmaster that's prompted what little attention my watches have received. My favorites were a pilot who struck up a conversation on a flight out of Houston and a young SoCal bakery worker behind the counter who wanted to see the "moon watch".

·

I just had someone notice my Seiko 5 Explorer I built. He actually asked if I could build one for him. It made me kind of giddy. It was the first time someone notice them. Usually no one would see them.

·

I had a TSA agent comment on my Omega Aqua Terra once. I couldn't chat with him for obvious reasons as that would have pissed off the people behind me in line.

I've had multiple people comment on my Monta Noble, but that watch has a pink dial and I suppose it's uncommon for a guy to wear a pink dialed watch.

I think a lot of this depends on what watch it is and how much it stands out. I imagine all gold watches would get comments, as would bright or unusually colored dials. But if you are walking around wearing a standard three hand watch with a black dial, even if it's a Rolex, I doubt it captures even a passing glance.

·

I had a waiter complement my Hemel. He didint know what it was so we got to talking. After 30 seconds I knew that he was a watch guy. He was wearing a Shinola and told me he had a Breitling Super Ocean that his dad gave him for graduating college. Super cool when stuff like that happens

·

only a few times... once recently at a Dunkin drive thru. Also recently, my niece said "nice watch", but she already knows I'm into watches.

·

I’ve had one person notice my speedmaster in over 20 years one person noticed my alpinist and asked if it was a Rolex and a lady in a watch shop comment on my darth tuna. Bought my first omega in 1987 and learned having a nice watch is just for your personal pleasure nobody cares what you wear unless it’s a Rolex and I’m not sure that people care about them either but they will know the brand

"nobody cares what you wear unless it’s a Rolex and I’m not sure that people care about them either but they will know the brand"

And judge you accordingly.

·

I live and work around people who know their watches, the ones that do not comment, I usually catch taking a stealthy glimpse at my wrist.

·

No one's gonna believe this. Beautiful young blonde at a cafe, sitting on a stool as I went up to order. She said exactly that: "Nice watch". It was my Seiko SKX007. I was too surprised that this was actually happenning and instead of playing it cool with a simple nod of thanks, I said slightly louder than intended "HEY THANKS!".

·

Weirdly it only ever happens when I'm wearing Casios or Seikos.

·

I can recall 3 times. Once on a cruise ship, someone with a different dial colour but the same watch said "nice watch". 2 times it was " You're a watch guy, what are you wearing?" While snowboarding and wearing a Suunto HR watch. 😁

This in the span of 15 years...

·

I love watches but of all the watches I’ve been lucky enough to own from Rolex to Casio the only ones I’ve had comments on were my Bulova Lunar Pilot from my mates and then funnily enough three comments in one day on my Cartier Crème De Menth.. can’t think why 🤷‍♂️🤣

I experienced the opposite scenario. I was at a restaurant where the waiter was wearing a Panerai while I was wearing a 38mm Bambino. Another time, a bartender was wearing a Cartier Santos while I was sporting a Casio Duro on a jubilee. 😀

·

My colleagues sometimes look at my watch because they know I choose my watch according to my mood. They start to worry when I step into the office wearing my Tasmanian Devil watch.😑

I’d take yours over either of the others 🤣

I’m with you, man. 👍

·

A number of times, mainly when wearing Panerai

·

I think people def notice watches but they don’t care enough to say anything. I’ve def seen people’s eyes subtly dart to the wrist as we all study and critique people to some degree even on subconscious levels. But I’ve only had people comment once or twice in an everyday situation . . . And they were also watch enthusiasts.

·

Some friends who know me might occasionally comment. Most people don’t and I’m fine with that. I bought the watch for me. No one else.

And you're not talking about watch size.
