The story of my watch collecting. Part 9.

Hi everyone!

In the previous part, I stopped at the fact that I sold Breitling. Also, Explorer was on sale, which no one wanted to buy.

I continued my search and almost chose the IWC Chronograph 41mm. An amazing watch in every sense!

Image

I tried them on probably 20 times and every time I was one step away from buying. Despite the size of 41mm and thickness, they lay very pleasantly on my wrist. Also, everyone knows that IWC's bracelet adjustment is one of the best on the market. For reference, bracelets for IWC, Glashutte and Lange are made by the same company! I decided that the chronograph is not suitable for me for every day, but I am sure that sooner or later I will return to this watch.

There was another watch that was bothering me. I've never been a fan of this brand, but as a friend told me, congratulating me on buying an Explorer: "These are definitely not your last Rolex." At that moment I thought he was just a fool, but after 5 years of watch sickness, I came to the conclusion - I want the most pop watch on planet Earth: Rolex Submariner Date.

I, like many, have never understood the hype around them. I didn't like cyclops, I didn't need a 41mm diver, I was afraid of stories around their new 32** caliber and I was definitely not ready to overpay for them over retail. But that's what I thought until I met them live.

Once, I put them on my wrist, adjusted the bracelet with the best system in the world - glidelock and realized that I had never felt a more comfortable watch. The incredible landing of a Submariner is not a myth, but the real truth. Perfect proportions and weight. They are not heavy and not too light. They are neither thick nor thin. Cyclop turned out to be very useful, as I have poor eyesight. The bezel is a art. The black ceramic shines and is protected from scratches. The clicks of the bezel are out of competition. The crown is very convenient, the time and date are adjusted clearly, without backlash. No gaps between the case and the bracelet (hello Grand Seiko). Each part of this watch feels high-quality, expensive and monolithic. Accuracy is zero seconds per day. You don't get tired of them, they don't bother you. It wasn't love at first sight, it was a cold calculation. Buying a Submariner, I did not feel emotions, as from the purchase of previous watches. I just bought the best watch. In addition to the above, in exposure from perezcope, he proved that the first divers in history were the Submariner, not Fifty Fathoms.

The deal turned out to be perfect for me, as I exchanged the Explorer and paid the remaining amount on top. I combined this purchase with my 30th anniversary. Probably there is no more suitable watch for such a case.

Four months after the purchase, I still consider this watch the Grail. I am a crazy watch enthusiast, I read and watch content about watches every day and I can say with confidence that if I were given to choose absolutely any watch for the rest of my life, regardless of the cost, I would choose the Rolex Submariner Date. Not Patek, RM, Debethune and not F.P. Journe. Call me an idiot, but I think the Submariner is the best and most versatile watch in the world. Even in the Rolex lineup, I wouldn't want anything else.

Thus, I have permanently closed the niche of every day watch. But there were some more watches that I'll tell you about it in the next part.

Enjoyed reading that. Love the watch shots too. My personal preference is the no-date Sub and I’m patiently waiting for mine.

But wait - aren’t you just buying the brand and being a Rolex bro? Haha.

Thank you for explaining hopefully some of the Rolex haters will see beyond the AD waitlist and reverse snobbery.

Interesting that you chose the cyclops after not liking cyclops. What changed your mind? I hate cyclops and would prefer the no date but I haven’t tried either in person.

Interesting that you chose the cyclops after not liking cyclops. What changed your mind? I hate cyclops and would prefer the no date but I haven’t tried either in person.

Two reasons:

1. I have poor eyesight, and cyclops increases the date.

2. The cyclops is a distinctive feature of the Rolex, as well as the bracket of the Panerai.

Nice share. Congratulations on a beautiful classic watch.

Enjoyed reading the story of your watch collecting and learning how you ended up where you ended up. Goes to show we often don't know what we are looking for until we find it. And that trial and error is probably the only way to get there.
