Bites: My Cold, Dark Heart - The Hunt for Genuine Kindness in the Watch World.

Happy Tuesday fellow Crunchers!

I am fresh off the plane back from Morocco and I have so much I could chat about with you all today. I could talk about my experience in the fake watch markets, the difference in perception of luxury labels over there or how I actually felt safer walking the streets in a Rolex than I would in the UK, but I've instead decided to talk about the topic of 'authentic kindness', my depressing and cynical view of the world and how this relates to the watch community.

First, have a little look at the fun articles I've collected from WC land this week, check out anything you may have missed, and then come bring some light into my dark and miserable world at the end.

"My cold dark heart - The hunt for genuine kindness in the watch world."

In the UK tipping is not a big part of day to day life. I would say it's usual to tip for meals in restaurants, but certainly not obligatory, and is a way of rewarding good service.

In Morocco you tip for everything. Meals, divers, porters, guides, waiters, the cleaners at the toilets. Basically anyone who does anything for you, a tip is expected. Now, I do get that for some of these people the tips they make will be their sole income, so I do get why I'm doing it, but what it does make difficult is working out if the interactions you are having with people are genuine kindness and niceness, or if it's purely done for the tips at the end, and when I thought about it, this can translate to pretty much all corners of the watch world as well.

Authorised dealers and watch brands need to be nice for the potential sales.

Watch content creators need to be fairly tepid and nice in their content so as not to get cancelled and risk their ad revenue.

Watch reviewers on YouTube or Blogs need to be 'nice' in their reviews, or give only minor token criticism, in a bid to retain the relationship with those brands sending them watches.

The cynic in me can't help but feel there is a vail of fake niceties over interactions where someone is due to gain from the other.

Everyone:

Image

"Wow, you have a pretty dark view of the world. Why do you even care if people are laying on the niceties to get a sale? That's just how sales work! It's how society works! If you're getting a good experience and interaction, why care about the motives behind it? Isn't it a good thing that people are nice to each other??"

I think my dislike of the fake kindness may partly be down to being overly cautious about manipulation in this massively consumerist world we live in.

There are so many tactics out there that companies put to use to part us from our money that I am starting to develop a feeling of paranoia whenever I get a desire for a watch!

Do I just want it because everyone else raves about it?

Am I buying it just because of the back story? Would that be a bad thing??

Is this just FOMO I'm feeling??

How much am I being influenced into buying this??

Am I just buying it because the seller is so nice???

Image

I've said it before, anyone who says "I just buy what I like. Nothing influences me." is kidding themselves, so I know I'm not the only one who feels like this.

But it's not just the feeling of being manipulated by the fake niceties that triggers me, it's the fact that it makes it difficult to discern the genuinely kind folks from those just doing it for the sale.

Everyone:

Image

"You're saying you don't want people to be nice?? Brands and YouTubers should all be assholes to prove they're genuine??"

No! I want us all to be nice to one another!

I still want to be able to walk into my AD looking like...

Image

And his response still be...

Image

BUT, I also want to find the people and brands out there who do genuinely care about the watch community.

When I think about it, the most obvious place I've found honestly nice, decent and genuine watch folks is here in WC!

The only reason this community is as awesome as it is is due to the kindness, humour and sharing nature of the cool watch folks who have made this their virtual home.

Image

Outside of WC I can think of perhaps 2 or 3 other watch community members who I have had enough experience with to say that they seem like honestly caring and decent people. I'm not going to name them because I want to see if anyone else feels the same and mentions them in the comments, or if I'm actually a terrible judge of character!

So who do you think are the genuinely good folks in the watch world, be it brands, people, YouTubers or others?

Tell me your experiences and show me I'm just being a sad, miserable individual for thinking everyone is just in it for the payday!

Thank you for reading my internal monologue this week and speak soon!

Kaysia.

Firstly thank you for the continual help and kindness adding me in each week to the Bites. ❤

I was watching YouTube over the weekend and there seems to be new bad blood between Oisin and Paul Thorpe, whether it is currently only one-sided I'm still to figure out, while Oisin was on his channel smoking a cigar and drinking wine and talking about all things good and bad in the watch world, Paul was on another channel discussing watches with a few fellow YouTubers , I didn't see too much of Pauls channel that night as I was intrigued in what Oisin had to say and it was good listening for Paul. Would be worth a listen but he's pulled the video! so maybe head to Paul's and see if he bites back

Thank you Ben 🙏

Welcome back from Marroco! How’s the stomach?

Thank you for mentioning the ”Watches from each decade” post.

I agree with you that watchpeople seems to be genuinly kind and generous people, watchcrunchers included. In my interaction with professional watchpeople I feel the same. With few exception they seems generally interested in watches, not only their own brand. If it is genuin or not can be hard to tell. But it is of less interest to me, the important to me is if I get a positive experience or not. Shure in some cases I can imagine it’s just a professional fasade, but it is still so much better than the alternative. Me personally, I try to be nice to watchpeople, as well as non watchpeople, and feels that it pays back most of the time.

Honestly… since the Windup Meet up my perspective on people might have changed … usually I hate everyone including myself, but in order to have a more pleasant experience and conversation with other people starts from within. I believe the problem is within ourselves and once that is fix we can all be nice to each other…although I’m a working progress … it takes time and patience … hence I would love to do more meet ups and have more watch friends !! Or friends in general !! … I truly truly truly enjoy the meet ups plus I’m semi drunk it’s even better…haha aside from that I appreciate all the Crunchers well except for @DeeperBlue shes such a pain!! 😁

Physical meetups are the best. I saw that you might turn up in London, bringing the wifie to some Christmas shopping. Clever👍

@DeeperBlue nice article! I like toy think the majority of those in the watch collecting community/industry that I have met are good people. Clearly as with anything always minorities who will Always have a bad rep though.

thank yin for mentioning the latest episode of the the ZT Podcast too! 😎

·

Regarding genuine kindness in general, the world would benefit if we could always remember and practice the “golden rule.”

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.

Have a blessed day, Kaysia and everyone. 😎

Yes, I believe in good karma being returned.

I do try and think the best of people, even if I've had a less than pleasant experience.

There is one brand that has come across as a bit arrogant during the couple of times I've met them, but I'm guessing they are just trying to sell themselves and I try not to judge them for it.... But I am a pretty judgy person 😆

·

Having just come back from a tip heavy vacation also...it makes you think...but my wife and I had some genuinely great interactions with people (the sun has to be a factor)...enough so it makes our beloved East Coast seem pretty damn gloomy and you don't even see it unless you leave...BTW missed the Bites last week!

The large amount of decent people on this forum keep us engaged that's for sure.

·
DeeperBlue

Your videos on the Explorer cemented in my mind that it was the watch for me. I hope Rolex paid you well for those 😋

Wow, that's high praise. However you, and Rolex, might not want to see my future comparison between the Summiteer and the Explorer. It's going to be controversial. And to answer your question, yes Rolex paid me a couple of bazillions, but seems I need first to send a small payment to a Nigerian guy to liberate the funds :D

I do believe this has to be the longest and coolest post I have seen yet. Your contribution to this channel is pretty spectacular sir!

In an answer to your "genuinely being nice" question, it is one that is nearly impossible to answer. The only time we can ever know a persons true character is to be around them when things are going particularly bad. That's when the real nature of a human being is on full display.

·

Sorry I'm late to this discussion, but it's taken me days to read all the comment's. But now that I've done so, it's hard to believe that there is so much hatred, bigotry, war, strife etc in the world.

If only our global leaders could buy a decent watch and come on the Crunch, they would see how easy it is for a globally diverse bunch of guys n gals to get along with each other.

And, as this is Memorial Day 11/11 let's remember the words of the late, great John Lennon "Give Peace a Chance"

Lastly, I would love to mention my family, Mrs Yonder and the guys down the pub... Okay, and you lot.. my fellow Crunchers, my followers, my inspirations, the people who make me laugh, the people who make me jealous, and lastly the people who encourage me to empty my bank account

Very true words. So often we can judge a brand on how they manage a bad situation. Customer service is key.

And thank you for your kind words 🍻
