Buy my wife a Rolex to spite the in-laws

So pretty simple my in-laws are Chinese and basically every encounter with them is about money. I’m not Chinese so I don’t give in to their bs. So out of spite I’m thinking of buying wifey a Rolex (I can’t imagine them knowing any other brand).

Don't buy a watch out of spite or it will forever have that feeling attached to it.

·

Buy it if you & your wife love it.

·

Buy a Chinese fake one, everyone's a winner then! 😄

·

Tell them to pay the dowry

·

I'd take delight in wearing a cheap watch on those days.

Why? I don’t meet them anymore :-)

·

Sounds like some petty shit I would do haha.

If your wife WANTS a Rolex, and you can afford it, then go ahead. If not, just tell them you bought her one and save yourselves 10k😂

·

Do it! Let the chaos reing! 😈

Nah that's just crazy. Be comfortable in who & where you are in life & leave monetary insecurities of others well alone.

I've lived a day to day existence for 20 years in my life before finally getting to a place of financial comfort. During that period if I'd let other people's financial situations get to me, it would have made me a very bitter person indeed. Rid the negativity from your life, never see your inlaws again 🙏😜

😁I appreciate how serious a lot of you take the question, it wouldn’t put me in any financial stress or else I wouldn’t do it… and also implications of emotional trauma is nothing to worry about, I don’t have any attachments to things (yes that include my watch collection) only to people 🤔😁

Kinda reminds me of this sketch from the Harry Enfield Show.

If they're old school Chinese then I recommend buying a Japanese watch like Grand Seiko and tell them how much better it is than anything from China. That would really get under their skin😈😈😈😈😈

I am Chinese, my lawyer and quite a few of my former colleagues and best friends are Jewish, there is a trend amongst my Jewish friends where the father of the bride buys her future husband any watch they desire! No opinion about your relationship with your in laws, I might have experienced a similar relationship with my own in laws, just decided to earn more dollars. I actually hold a rather negative personal opinion of persons from the Middle Kingdom who worship only Rolex but will not debate the popularity of the brand in Asia. Rolex ads do not exactly speak to my Chinese lifestyle.

You: buys wife Rolex

In-laws: our daughter not good enough for a Patek???

·

“Buy what your wife wants!” My advice. And if they don’t like that… F@!k ‘em 😂

I thought f*** you watches were a thing.

Yes but you buy those for yourself 😉

·

Not really offering advice but I can’t resist the Larry David reference 🤣

Never ever gonna please Chinese in laws buddy you’re a Gwailo , I grew up as an Anglo immersed in Cantonese and Can cook thanks to my mates mum ( god bless her she has passed now ) but the brothers and my mate were extremely materialistic as was my Northern Chinese Mandarin speaking gf Xuiming and would not relax or stop and smell the roses ever . Sorry my Chinese brothers and Sisters on Watch crunch but I believe the pressure placed on study and money is askew to us lazy bloody Australians ( i used to remind the North Shore rich Chinese at bbqs when they would talk about us lazy Aussies that we built a country in 200 years and your here bloody enjoying it . That would shut them up , All my Cantonese mates would chuckle ( been in Australia since the gold rush so really fully Aussie ) that glad you said it because they know your right ! Chinese in laws cannot be appeased short of buying them a Condo ! God bless all my Chinese mates , and my wife is Thai and they are more relaxed like us Aussies :) so my mother in law loves me and hugs me when ever I see her :) I love her back ! Yes you heard it here I love my mare ! My mother in law !

They pull out the jewellers eyepiece don’t you worry 😂

You would think that is spite, but to a Chinese who's all about money, that'll actually increase their respect for you. Source: I'm Chinese.

Aaron I reckon he needs to buy em a holiday Condo to really get respect

How old are you?

Good question

·

No spite but impress them with what you spent on your wife. I'm sure your in laws will know MSRP, or, even better, after market $$$$. 😎

·

As far as I'm concerned the "smile and wave" policy works the best when dealing with in-laws. It's all just chatter, and I can maintain a happy face long enough.

I think it depends on the context of these money conversations- if they hassle you about being wasteful with money and you buy the watch out of defiance that is pretty funny- if they called you a brokie and you go and buy the Rolex that’s… that’s pretty funny too tbh

·

Strange 🙄

·

If you're trying to impress your in-laws through your wife sporting a Rolex, then that is every reason to sport a fake. They're only looking at the name, not any aspect of the watch. Just get her a decent looking fake.

·

buy a rolex, put it in a vice and crush the damn thing - pop the bits in a bag and give them the bag!

they like rolex you gave them a rolex ...

too much ?

Weirdest post to date. Your Chinese in-laws won’t be impressed, because everyone has Rolex in China. Whether real or fake, they’re super common over there
