Bad Influences on Watch Crunch

This looks to be my last new old watch, and my penultimate watch of 2022. (I technically have another in transit but it will be my first of 2023.) This is a Heloisa, which was a brand of Gilomen & Cie. They registered the brand in 1912, but did not register the fancy "H" scripted logo until 1950. So, my personal search for a pre-1950 red second hand continues. I have to take it home, find a more permanent strap, and clean it up.

For 20 years my collection has consisted primarily of mid-1960's minimalist watches and 1940's rectangle "tank" watches, with a few quartz beaters thrown in. I never would have looked twice at a watch like this. What could have changed that would have made me buy several of them?

I think that the answer is to be found right here on Watch Crunch. I think that I have been "influenced" by one of our chief vintage influencers. I blame @Porthole.

In addition to military style watches I am also more accepting of quartz movements. I had been very anti-quartz. I may have been confused. Perhaps, I was just anti-Fossil.

Who on WC has influenced you? How has your taste changed or expanded under the sway of WC?

All Crunchers are bad influencers!!! I’m trying my best not to go the Vintage rabbit hole…thanks to you and and the infamous @Porthole …

·

I’m so easily influenced that pretty much everyone here has gotten me interested in at least one watch or type of watch. I no longer hate quartz, I’m considering several Seikos and Sinns, I search eBay almost continuously for vintage watches…the list goes on. Not only have I discovered new things, I’ve started to like old things I used to hate.

It’s disgusting really. You guys are the worst.

·

I don't know if I've been influenced about specific watches by any specific person, but this place has definitely helped my pile of expensive, outdated, wrist-worn trinkets seem totally normal.

·

The Pook I'm wearing today is thanks to your influence Greg!

How else would I have found this microscopic microbrand from Finland except here on the Crunch.

Oh - and I can't forget @AllTheWatches influencing me to purchase the Farer Meredith...

Did you end up getting one? What do you think of it if you did?

·

The only direct influencer on watchcrunch for me thus far has been my friend Gareth @GasWorks .

Every time we go out for a beer he brings along something he has been working on and more often than not I end up buying it! I had no interest in vintage seikos previously!

That is a looker.

Everyday is a struggle listening to this lot, especially those of you in the vein of vintage. A struggle to keep up with the information, a struggle to keep up with the fashion of the times, a struggle to put up regular WRUW posts, a struggle to brave posting up anything at all, and a struggle with containing my inner hoarder. A pleasure getting to know some neat folks and learning about watches. But the struggle is real.

·

You know I think I've been a much worse influence on all of you guys than you have on me. I feel really good about my level of degeneracy bringing down the conversation.

I am too stupid to even take the advice that I actively solicit.  It took me a full month of bashing my head against the wall.before I took @Pete_NSOW 's great watch advice for my wife.

Man...

I was in such a state when I joined WC, that everyone has had some influence.

Thanks to you & @Porthole I'm more open to & educated about vintage.

Thanks to @mjosamannen I'm not going to complete my attempt at a themed collection.

Thanks to @TimexBadger I appreciate Timex more.

Thanks to @HotWatchChick69 I'm much educated about brands & economics.

Thanks to @Max & the bunch of enablers he harbors I need 3 watch boxes currently. 😉😂

I used to think I was the president of the @GasWorks fan club, but it's definitely you now! 👍

Both of you have been hugely supportive. I appreciate that more than you know. Thank you

The pleasure is all mine. I look forward to more " under the ( wifes) radar" purchases in the new year!

·

I think WatchCrunch pushed me towards thinking about luxury se watches agian even though I really shouldn't 😅 I got the BB36 after joining WC and that is my most expensive watch yet. I'll stick with that for a looong time

·

Can't say I've been influenced by anyone here; I think watches are a personal thing and I know what I like and what I don't like and I don't see that changing anytime soon. But what I would offer is the quality of the conversation here - whether I agree with someone or not, or vice versa - is exceptional. Cheers to all.

·

It's hard to pinpoint a particular person, but it is a watch photo here, a recommendation of a dial there, or some good advice on modding.

Overall, WC had had somewhat of a calming effect on me. I seem to buy less and tinker more.

·

The forum is loaded with influencers. Some are fantastic writers like yourself. There are members here with vast and stunning watch collections. Totally out of my legue but it’s great to see real owners of said collections bringing these fantastic watches outside the ADs door. All members with the same, or similar, taste as me and all those with totally different taste. And to find that both work just fine in inspiring collections.

·

Great post.  Watchcrunch has influenced because it is such a non-judgmental forum.  I am very impressed with how accepting, funny and sincere the people on this site are.  It's really a breath of fresh air with what is going on in the world.  I would be remiss if I didn't mention @TonyXXX for his extreme act of kindness when I first joined.  It has already become a story I told all my family and friends and will stay with me forever.   Lastly, the awesome advice and encouragement I have received is very much appreciated.

P.S. @UnholiestJedi I'm honored I played a small part in your appreciation of Timex.  Thanks for the shout out!

·

@UnholiestJedi hit the nail on the head. I went from needing all the models of a brand to actually finding what it is I like about watches. Am I collecting or am I just buying watches ?? Thanks to the usual suspects, seems you all have posted already, for your experience with and educational posts about your journey, I feel I'm now on my journey and not just filling boxes with OCD or Anxiety watches. Big thanks to @Max for firing this up for us.

·

Another thought provoking post my friend, something I'm sure we've all come to expect from you. No polls, thank God, but intelligent conversations and as always a wealth of knowledge.

Myself, I'm not easily influenced, not by any external factors or people, but I would say that people like yourself and others have made me think and analyse my collecting habits since joining WC.

The people I have met here have given me the opportunity to share my thoughts and what I think this hobby is about, which to me, while being a personal preference process in the choices we make, but also the experience we have as a collective makes this forum a welcome change.

We all have a common interest and love for this hobby but a definite respect for others perspective on the hobby at the same time. That's what I enjoy about this hobby and this forum, non judgemental and very welcoming.

So buy that 50mm quartz Fossil watch and know that we won't judge you for that, but do expect a plethora of WTF comments to follow. 😂

·

The rumours of my influence are an exaggeration.

·

WRUW is the gate way drug!  But I've been influenced by a few Crunchers in the short time I've been around.

@ChronoGuy needs no introduction. I directly credit him for my contracting Chronographidis!

@Porthole and @Aurelian Yes you! opened my eyes to the Vintage life!

@Ichibunz 🍻 Of course his silky singing voice! But his love of Micro's always reveals watches not on my radar.

@JaeBust with his seemingly endless array of NOS museum quality watches

Last but not least @SurferJohn has been my Yoda since I started collecting vintage Seiko's and others.

But as a whole, Collectively this site is the Bad kid your mother warned you about.😂

·

Learn you will, young skywalker!

·

Of course, NOS = Nostalgia = a pain in the nose. Cheers, bro!! 😜

Now I know who Nixon copied when I saw this watch . I love it !

·

When I get Grand Seiko I will definitely be following @HotWatchChick69 's lead. I'm just afraid I'll go from "interested" to "disciple" in a short period once I make that jump 💸
