What inspires your SOTC post?

A common post on this forum and elsewhere is the State of the Collection (SOTC). I posted one a long time ago and nary a day goes by without a new one. I am not pro or anti SOTC. I don't comment on many of them, except to pick out a particularly nice or rare watch or to praise the variety and obvious discernment of the collector. But, why do we do it, expose our collections in this way? (Did I miss an explanation?)

I’d guess mostly A and then a bit of overlap between B/D.

I haven’t done one (yet) but I have thought about doing so. Mainly to hear opinions, a few compliments and maybe some insight or advice in terms of moving forward with my collection.

·

I’m a coward.. so I don’t do it… but there’s a few folks I would love to see their whole collection!! In Person!! 😜🍻

It’s Mel and Jae’s!!!

·

We all buy watches because we love them & the stories they can tell.

What is a SOTC but a collection of stories that tell us about ourselves?

·

just to tell stories and sharing mostly. coz most of us didnt share anywhere but here lol

·

I’d say a bit of A & B. Unless you have buddies or family members who are watch nerds, no one else cares, so there’s really no other outlet where cool watches (yours and others) can be appreciated. I think B comes into play as well; I mean, what is WRUW if not a daily show and tell. 😆 I love it though.

Every SOTC to me:

Voted A, but to be more precise: 40% A + 20% B + 10% C leads to 30% D.

Sharing is the key driver, a bit of recognition & praise a nice (but not unintended) bonus.

·

Because of A, it's B, C and D.

·

If I ever post a SOTC there is only one response I want ...

We need an SOTC section. Kinda like the WRUW, but only refreshed monthly/annually.

·

Because nobody cares about our watches except this group. And people inherently want to share something they’re passionate about.

I think that is what they envisioned with the Gallery section. You can see my collection there.

My favourite YT videos are the SOTC (but now I think I seen them all). I did my SOTC as well more than a year ago here on WatchCrunch. For me a collection gives so much more of the owner than a single watch when it comes to taste, interests , prefered style etc.

If WC is your (only) watch community, as in my case, I wanted to share what type of collector I am. I think I made my point then so I don’t think I’ll do another one. Having said that I do like the yearly SOTC some youtubers publish just to compare and see how their collection has changed.

So for me it’s an A with B,C and D in the mix.

·

I haven't posted a SOTC mostly because I don't think I have enough of a connection. Secondly it takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there. So thank you all who have.

However I think its healthy to do this here in this setting where people will be able to appreciate your collection. It also help us to get to know each other by seeing what you like, how you collect and the stories behind it.

·

Mostly because no one else would listen in real life!

I'd love to tell my story about my collecting journey and share my philosophy, but I've been too lazy (busy?) To do it properly. One day..

Precisely.

·

I like looking at them to see what someone else buys, trends in their collection, if they have a theme, and what I might want to buy. I assumed others felt the same way so I posted a SOTC yesterday. I got a lot of reinforcing comments which I enjoyed. I also got a couple comments that I think might help someone make a purchase decision.

·

I voted C. Probably not too surprising considering what I just did to my collection...🤣

·

Not that I have posted one but for me it’s a nice way of documenting my collection for my own benefit and summarising in words how I’ve curated it. Obviously there is an element of wanting to share it with people who care too, I love seeing other peoples watches!

·

E.) I was not seeking praise. I'm relatively new to this hobby and this is a perfect venue to share my progress.

·

Took some awful pictures for a SOTC today. I like to share the things that make me smile so maybe someone else might share it. And if someone else doesn't like it that is on them. But on here everyone is not the types to make you feel bad about what you like so it is a little more encouraging.

·

I don't have many watch nerd to talk to IRL, so...

Bingo!

·

Only do SOTCs on my YouTube channel and do them reluctantly. However I think they are useful information for viewers to understand my perspectives.

·

I posted an SOTC today and I did it to also send the link to none watch collecting friends.

I think that being a watch fan means I'm enthusiastic about the purchases I've made and the styles of watches I've chosen. Why not display it? Maybe someone appreciates the watches maybe someone gives you insight on something better.

·

I actually really enjoy looking at others SOTCs. Occasionally I’ll discover a watch or two I never knew about but also allows me to reflect on what I find value in versus someone else. I think my favorite are the collections which have watches I would never own - give this boring guy a chance to live vicariously for a bit.

That said, I definitely get in my own head about sharing my entire collection - which feels very different from when I share a photo of a single watch I own. All I am thinking is: Who really cares what you own Chauncey?… you have nothing interesting, colorful, or fun… get out of here you vanilla waste of time. 😂 Sad but true.

I'm not answering, lol. Plus, you have already decided what my answer would be if I did answer. I posted some, not all of my stuff a while back like you.

It is true that my poll answers have the force of law.

For me, half of my relation with a watch is how I use it. How I use a watch is dependent on my circumstances, and what other watches I have available. (Eg me owning an affordable yet versatile diver, chrono and dress trio, allows me to own more wacky watches that don't necessarily suit every outfit/occasion since I have the trio to fall back on)

Take my seiko 5. Its a small, low accuracy, affordable, low water resistance piece, so if it was going to be my only watch, it would fundamentally lesser my enjoyment of it. As a part of my collection however, its a good looking dress watch that i really enjoy as a weekend wear.

For me in a collection each watch has significance not just as an individual but as a part of a whole, and so just as people want to show off their individual watches, they want to show off the collection as a whole too

I've never bothered making a SOTC post on this forum, or in any other place. Why? Well, the responses are either going to be, "Cool watches, man..." to which I will say, "Duh, that's why I bought them..." or maybe someone saying something odd about them to which I will say, "Well, that's your opinion... so what?" and, in either scenario, I just don't see any value in having the exchanges at all. Basically a waste of my time.
