The Future of Collecting Vintage Watches

@Ryan_Schwartz, @Porthole, and I discuss the future of collecting vintage watches over at The Escapement Room. Things were said that can't be unsaid. Tears were shed. Someone broke down and considered buying a Seestern.

Considered? I’m wearing it.

It tried. Too many rules.

Way to ruin the surprise.

Inflation is the elephant in the room.

I agree with @Porthole. Soon we will have to categorize 90-00s watches as vintage. 😭

@Aurelian What's a Mexican quartz Nivada?

You made me google up Bucks County Playhouse 😂

For a brief time (1980's?) the Nivada name was owned by a company that made quartz watches for the Mexican market.

Good read

25 years takes us to 1999…. You feel old yet?

I appreciate I’m coming across like a miserable git, but I also have had my watchmaker seemingly disappear. His shop is still there but he’s never open. He has three of my watches (not too bothered if their gone gone, they weren’t sentimental pieces) and as a sign of things to come I’m not particularly inclined to recommend vintage as often as I do. I’m sorry. My rules and guide are still valid, but I doubt you’ll get as much bang for your buck anymore.

still got three weeks, I could change my mind…

Higher prices really discouraged me from a few vintage Seiko's I really like.

Went the retro route unfortunately.

Hopefully I'll find a nice Time Sonar some day.

Unfortunately it's not only vintage watches 😕

Take Aragon for example, they had a model last year (Bioluminescent) that sold for $160. They went on clearance, 2 for $200 and sold out like hotcakes. Out of curiosity I checked ebay and the LOWEST was $260! So basically it's sellers hyping up these outrageous prices

For an NH35! Sure it's rare for us that are fans but....

My biggest fears with vintage watches are that the servicing/spare parts prices would exceed the value of a watch itself. And there would be no watchmakers willing/ capable to do servicing.

Here’s a great source for affordable, completely overhauled vintage watches. I’ve bought several from Tristan and also had him work on some of my family heirloom watches, and can confirm that his work is top-notch. Absolutely highly recommended. https://www.etsy.com/shop/wierclock?ref=notif_nfyfs&order=date_desc&sort_order=date_desc
