Which of these 3 "dress watches" is right for you?

Some claims are made that a classic Rolex Submariner on a steel bracelet goes with a more formal setting. Others would choose a more classic approach like a Grand Seiko hand wound on an alligator strap. And then - there's a compromise in the middle; a classic Cartier on a steel bracelet. Personally, I would have no problem with either of the 3 watches, but if I had to choose - I'd probably pick the Cartier. What about you?

Man I knew I was messed up in the head when I saw a groom at a wedding wear a Submariner with his suit and I started judging him. Wear whatever you like and ignore the haters (like me)!

·

I am wearing a GS SBGW285 right now as I type! GS is Patek quality at fraction of the price.. and none of that Swiss shenanigans.

·

Not a wrong answer. Despite my vote, I’d grab the Santos first, but then I would immediately worry about my cufflinks  shredding the bezel. Do I change my shirt or watch? But I am already buttoned up, so watch it is.

All look great with that blue suit.

I don't try to arrogantly flout convention when dressing up.

“Right is Right even if nobody does it. Wrong is wrong even if everybody is wrong about it.”-- G.K. Chesterton

And that looks like fresco, so I hope it is not a suit.

A plain steel submariner is a hard sell as a dress watch.  I know people do it and it's even reasonably well accepted but I frankly think the look clashes.

You won't go wrong with either of the others: the Santos is a very competent neo-dress watch and the GS is much more classic dress watch proportions.

·

Cartier Santos all the way!!! I own it and love it!

·

I don’t own a sport coat, so Santos with a button down shirt for me.

·

I’d probably roll the GS.

·

I would always wear the watch I'm feeling most comfortable in the moment and suits the outfit. Your jacket looks quiet sporty, so I would choose the Cartier in this case. Normally I would tend to a more classic watch on a strap but in this special case a bracelet just fits better. Unpopular opinion I guess but I think you can also wear a well done rubber straps to a suit, especially when it's a dark strap.

·

I have a black carbon fiber strap with white stitching that dresses my sub up quite nicely. It makes it look dressy.

·

GS is the easy pick for "dressy", but it's my least favorite of the 3.

·

I can't remember when was the last time I had to dress up and wear a suit, but in the unlikely event that it will happen in the near future, I'm casting my vote on the GS and for three reasons.

The first reason is because of the strap. There is nothing wrong with bracelets but (a) I'm not a bracelet fan and (b) for me a dress watch is always fitted to a leather strap.

The second reason is because I prefer to wear watches that are not easily identified and because I'd rather catch TB instead of being called "that guy there with the Rolex".

·

GS is the classic answer but I went for Santos as I fell in love when trying it on in an AD a while ago and I have a thing for pilots watches… might be the only “pilots watch“ that could double as a dress 😉👔

·

The GS. It's both more elegant and less likely to get recognized and stolen.

·

I'm no Seiko/GS fan, but I'd pick the GS from these three.

·

These three only with with a brown suit, duh.

Cartier though.

·

Santos does it for me if its a dressy occasion. The GS doesn't do it for me and the Sub for everything else.

·

#cartier Santos for me. #rolexsubmariner is not a dress watch IMHO, and that particular #grandseiko doesn't move me.

·

GS for the win!

·

of the three, I'd pick the GS, and only because I think a dress watch should be on a strap (less bling on your wrist looks better when dressing up in my opinion).  If all of them were on a strap, I'd go for the Santos first with the GS as second.  I've seen some shots of a Submariner looking nice worn at formal events but personally I'd never choose something that chunky to go along with a dress up event.

·

My word.

Unless I’m mistaken, a blue suit.

The addition of a blue suit, according to those who determine the style rules on here, means that everything works…

… even a diver as a dress watch.

Do what you like.

·

While I personally couldn't justify the cost of any of these, there's one clear winner for me. The Rolex is not a dress watch. The Cartier is misconceived - I wouldn't wear it with anything. The GS with that strap is perfect in every way.

For (a lot!) less money, this what turned up in the post an hour or two ago;

BTW, that reslly is a very blue suit, isn't it? Never mind the watch, I want to see more of that - what else are you matching it with?

Just an ordinary casual blue blazer.

A sports watch is at least as good with a blazer as a dress watch. So the Rolex would work well, much as I love that GS.

·

As a purely dress watch, I would take the Grand Seiko. Not a fan of Cartier designs and the Submariner is less dressy. However, as an overall watch I would take the Submariner. I find that dive watches look rather fitting in formal occasions, but they are also more fitting for casual occasions when compared to more dressy watches, so there is more versatility there.

·

Depends on your stance on dress…. Suit for work or even blazer and shirt no problem with the submariner . Black Tie / Wedding etc then I’m with leather strap so would have to choose Grand Seiko.

·

The Santos looks good but if I was offered the GS or the Santos I would pick the GS All day long, a brand that I bet the top 3 are concerned about.
