I am getting inpatient and want to buy another watch what should I do?

Long story short, I love the Baltic MR01 and have wanted one for a while and have been waiting patiently for the new drop in Mid-June.

However now we are closer to it I am itching to buy something new and have been thinking depending on delivery times I may not even receive this until Autumn.

I'm currently in the process of building a watch and there is also a secret watch which I cannot share coming later this year that I have my name down for which I will buy so I already have 3 commitments however I want one now.

Have you ever been in this situation, what did you do? My birthday is also September 8th so I was thinking maybe I should wait but I was wondering what others would do in my situation aha.

What would @Ichibunz do? Mmm...that one is hard. (While I was typing he bought two watches.)

What would @HotWatchChick69 do? He will buy and auction off multiple watches by September. The net good in the world will increase slightly.

I will troll eBay for cheap vintage watches. I will be lucky if any keep time.

Patience requires not caring what we would do. We are not a healthy lot.

Wait. You are almost there, and substitute watches are likely to fail to satisfy leading you to buy what you wanted in the first place and have wasted money on a watch you don’t end up wearing. Many, many have faced this dilemma. Waiting is wisdom.

·

Buy a new strap 😀

·

You should realize how all the previous watches have failed to deliver lasting satisfaction and realize that this cycle will repeat until you stop playing along. Also consult your local clergyman.

·

Baltic makes great watches. And that model is beautiful!

·

If you have the itch to get something while you wait for this watch, perhaps look at your collection and see if there is another kind of watch you also want to add. For me, I am in a stage where I have a good variety of neutral dial colors and now want some color variety. I have two dive watches which feels like enough so I am looking more towards field or pilot watches.

·

Well there are always fun vintage options - such as the beautiful Ingersoll @Deeperblue bought for £20

·

I am with Aurelian on this one. I have been expecting a delivery from Ali that is now late by a month, and so in my frustration I went on ebay and bid on about 20-30 watches, all cheap. Expecting to get perhaps 5 of that lot, hoping for 1-2 decent ones.

·

I have a simple formula every year I budget 10-15% of my income to "Entertainment", for me that means buying watches. I mostly look at independents, GS, Omega.

·

I will not give you an advice … 😉

Could try buying a new strap to change the look of the watch. Or buying something fun and cheap like a Swatch, Casio, Timex or a vintage dress watch.

·

I'd wait for the one you want. I get compromises in some situations. Some stuff is out of reach but this one doesn't seem necessary. And I am against unnecessary compromising.

·

Watch or read watch reviews? Got to a watch meetup?. Go to ADs and look? Sometimes it helps sometimes it leads to a new watch.

·

Get what you want. 6 months from now you don’t want to look at your wrist and see something you compromised on because you couldn’t wait. It’s hard though I get it! But I’ve always regretted watches I just “couldn’t wait for and needed now”

Yea I agree! just wait, or you will endlessly be buying more. But I don’t listen to my own advice and I buy and sell and keep and give. But I have reached a point in my collection and journey, that my hunt is really for grails(the waist list/deposit sector) and interesting micro brands that I will probably keep, wear, sell, or trade. When ever I buy a filler or buy into hype I always end of being unsatisfied and unload it just so I don’t have to face mistakes when I open my watch box.

Many have been In this same situation myself included. I accumulated over 175 watches do to my impatience. What I found was I was not any happier as I was scratching an itch , I was high on the chase, and addicted to the shipping notification and anticipation of a new watch in the mail. This year I committed to selling off almost all of my watches ( mostly affordable and at a very large financial loss )and being disciplined to buy what I really wanted, watches I would wear and form true memories with. I think I’ve done this and as a result I have a 5 watch collection that I wear and truly love versus watches I liked a lot. It’s a tough transition. Be patient . The journey is lifelong , there are discoveries to be made and paths ahead you can’t imagine if you stay the course you want to be on !

Buying discipline and restraint is both difficult and essential in the Watch hobby, IMHO. Every substitute watch steals funds for watches a collector really wants. I’m not counting $100 homages, because as I’ve said before a hundred dollar Pagani with a reliable Seiko movement owes me nothing. But the problem area is the $500-$1000 substitute watch. These are inexpensive enough to acquire several, individually, with the expectation that it will ‘do’. But it never does! The pitfall is that this price range is cheap enough to buy two, or so, a year. In just three years time a collector then has spent $3000, enough for a preowned ‘grail’ for a lot of new collectors. However, the box is full of watches that have no trade in value and difficult to resell at any price.

Substitute watches are almost never worth it, unless it’s a very bargain homage. I wanted a palm motif Datejust. But when I tried to buy one at an AD, I was introduced to the Rolex buying game. I was disgusted. In the end, my Pagani Design homages ended up being a substitute that fully satisfied my desire. $15,000 on the scalper market versus $100 for the PD, and screw Rolex for treating potential customers like crap. Substitute watches can make sense. But generally they don’t.

I just buy straps to tide me over. It's a really easy way to make your existing collection more exciting.

·

Buy another watch. Next question!

·

Buy another watch if it fills your soul and doesn’t mess you up financially. Life is short.

·

Beyond just "don't," my advice would be to look at your collection and try to identify any actual gaps that you have actually been looking to fill for some time and then maybe use this opportunity to fill them. For example, I got the Christopher Ward Twelve because I've wanted a good integrated-bracelet steel sports watch for a while, somewhere between the PRX and a Zenith Defy. The Twelve was exactly that (I had a Frederique Constante Highline that also hit that niche but which I sold for overhanging my wrist), so it made sense to buy it, and I didn't consider it an impulsive purchase even though I bought it right as it came out.

The same could be the case for other types of watches that you've been looking for for a while. For example, maybe you've had a longtime hankering for a "true" GMT, or a compressor, or a monopusher chrono, or whatever, and so getting one now both scratches an itch but fulfills a longer-term vision for your collection. Whereas if you don't really have anything you've been looking for and you just buy another watch exclusively for the little dopamine hit, it's probably not worth it.

·

I just received word from Baltic that the MR01 will ship in May

So maybe your wait is shorter than you think, and you can satify the urge with the watch already ordered.

However, if you ever need a quick fix you can always purchase an inexpensive Aliexpress watch to satify the urge, and then give it away to some young person to get them started in this expensive and consuming hobby.

That's what I have done in the past. So far, I believe I have given away ten Aliexpress watches to friends, family and colleagues. I still have a few kicking around that will find a home at some point.

·

What did I do? I took a deep breath, looked at what watches I already owned, thought about what I had coming up and asked myself, "Do I really need this damn thing, or am I just chasing a dopamine hit from buying a watch in general?" And after wrestling with it in my mind for a bit, I beat back the thought.

Don't buy this one, I want it!🤣

Wait. Don't substitute. It only increases the time until you buy the one you want
