Brand Pet Peeves

You might find a brand fascinating, love the design of their watches, but something just holds you back. An irrational pet peeve that has no logical reason to exist, yet it does. It could be the width of their markers seem a tad too chunky, a random extra twirl on their 9s seems unnecessarily gaudy, or that too tapered but not tapered enough lugs that makes you instinctually clench up.

For me it's the Christopher Ward logo. Not the logo itself but its placement on their watches. The fact that their dials just have the logo now and not the written out name Christopher Ward drives me absolutely bonkers. Either pull an H.Moser and have a dial devoid of a logo (like their Bel Canto) or just do what you used to do and have the logo and written name together! Sheesh! For some reason to me, the logo only style makes CW watches look incredibly tacky and cheap.

I don't mind a logo only dial, but I do not like the CW logo at all and it would keep me from buying one of their watches. Looks are in the eye of the beholder.

·

I’m the opposite. The previous written logo (and its positioning) was just a complete barrier to CW watches for me. Now they are real contenders with 4-5 models I particularly like.

·

Yep, logo only is fine in this case since that name is quite long. Unless you’re VC or AP, best if you can have a short name and a logo. Think about Rolex and the Crown. If the watch had a Crown and Hans Wilsdorf and Sons on it, I’m not sure it would hit the same.

·

I'm the same way with Orient. Really nice pieces, incredibly ugly logo.

I have one that's even stupider. I think the Yema Superman is outstanding, but I will never get one because I hate Superman. I hate the character so much it will stop me from getting a fantastic watch. And it goes for the new Seiko 5's, they look too much like the "S" symbol.

·

I'm indecisive so prefer both on the CW. 😉

Like the new logo myself

For me it's round indices, dunno why just find 'em repugnant.

Dislike date complications.

Lack of AR coating

Titanium

Yeah, I'm a bit odd I guess 🤔🤣

·

I think the recent move to a logo only design has been a good move for CW. Having the full name on the dial has been a big turn off for me on their older range, but I now own one of their recent watches and I'm planning to visit their store in the new year to buy another.

Orient reminds me of a cigarette packet logo 🤮

Citizen have nice looking watches but the ones that I'd like to own have 🩲 as a 12 indicie 🤯

·

I guess CW can’t win, the reason they took the name away and added the logo was because of the amount of people complaining how much they hated the name on the dial

·

For me it's text on the dial. Prime examples are Tudor and Rolex with 6 or sometimes more lines of text on the dial. Put that information on the case back. Especially when there is no see through case back.

This completely ruins the aesthetic of a watch for me. I want a watch to tell the time and not spend time reading an essay written on the dial.

·

I get where you’re coming from! And CW often comes up in the big logo debate :) I was lucky enough to pick up mine before the weird logo was printed on the dial.

PS: my real pet peeve is not so much logos, but too much lettering (Rolex..) or for instance stars (Longines…) on the dial…

Personally I would prefer name and logo. Rolex have proven you can get away with quiet a bit of text on the dial.

·

For me it's the exact opposite. I kind of like the new logo, at least it's cohesive and tells something (british and swiss flags), but the full name on the dial is way tonlong and the font has nothing noticeable to me. I found logo only as more "sober yet evocative" than too much information.

·

Price. There are many brands I find fascinating, love their designs, love their movements, their heritage, etc.

But their price just holds me back. I can over look a lot a little things that annoy me, but not price 🤑

I agree. Much more appealing to me personally now than before.

The logo has always seemed to be a bone of contention for CW and wasn't helped when Chris left the company, in hindsight a name change and rebranding at that point would have probably been a better idea for them going forward. Not sure how Mike France Instruments or MFI would have worked for people of a certain age 😄. The new logo seems more popular and less of an issue than the word mark has been. I'm just glad I managed to get a Sealander with the word mark as I think it's a more cohesive design for the 39mm.

·

CW always wanted just the logo, but there was an apparent intellectual property reason that they had to also put their name for about 5 years before they could use just the logo.

·

I don't like paying their vat fees

·

CW doesn’t quite click for me either. Hand shape, lack of seconds hand on Bel canto, no screw crown on some sporty watches, and like you a bit iffy on logo. Want to like. Want to buy. Can’t do it.

·

I am not a fan of the new logo, I find it somewhat tacky and cheap. Looks ok on some of their models like Sandhurst and Cranwell but absolutely awful on the 12 with the textured dial. On all CW models I prefer the full Christopher Ward logo to the twin flags logo.

·

Wow I remember it like yesterday when we were all bashing on CW for having a full name printed at 9 o’clock!

Can’t please everyone 😅

·

I don't like these wide numerals on a Longines, it somehow looks like a fashion watch to me. That's why I will never buy one (and not because I can't afford it of course 😉)

·

Also I will probably never own one of these. I don't like these indentations on the bezel, also it looks too shiny, it (excuse me Orient fans, im sure it's a great watch) looks kinda cheap. But i have to inspect it in person

I think that CW is the red-haired kid that others like to pick on. They have been around the clock with their brand placement, trying to please OCD watch geeks. I have two CWs, a C12 and a C65 Series 1 Sandhurst. If pressed, I would say that the written CW name placed under the "12" is the presentation that I prefer. The flags logo doesn't mean much until it has been explained to you. This rather defeats the object of a logo. Still, coronets, roses, greek letters, posh French names, difficult German names, customers get used to them. It could be worse, they could trade as "Hub-Lot" or "Dick Mile".

·

I love CW watches!! But I’m definitely not a fan of the Logo. Looks generic to me for some reason.

Ah the problem with any import. Just had it with Brew and REC. Much harder for us Brits now we left the E.U

·

I will go farther and say that I was ambivalent about the brand name in the past, but ever since they jettisoned Christopher Ward, the man (and we can all see it was not for the worse, looking at their products), I just don’t have a feeling of the brand identity. When I see CW on the dial, all I can think about is how that company outgrew its namesake. They should have renamed the company or at least the watch brand, and take that as an opportunity to redesign the logo too. I love the watches they make, absolutely don’t care about the branding

·

I like the logo. I love the logo when it applied like some of their newer models. I understand why others didn't like the name on the logo as they said it made it sound like a fashion brand.

·

CW has struggled with their branding for a long time , it's not so much that it was the actual name of one of the co-founders but rather that it is plain and common and that doesn't really inspire anything IMHO.

Calvin klein has no issue as the name is cool , CW sounds like the name of my accountant or next door neighbour.

Real names are not an issue when it fits with the brand , Jack Daniels has an air of rough and tough , Aunt Bessies Yorkshire puddings sounds homely and warming.

I like the logo but IMHO it's just another band aid , I honestly think they should have gone a step further and dropped the first name and re-branded to just ''Ward''.

complication

Everyone's different. I can't stand the Christopher Ward brand in general as 'Christopher Ward' isn't even a watchmaker. Why do I want some ego trip businessman name on my watch dial? In the 1800s and 1900s when timepieces had some guy's name on the dial, it actually meant something. But in the modern era, examples like Christopher Ward, or Dan Henry... give me a break. So I never have, and never will, buy a watch with that kind of branding. So the flag(s) design is actually the most palatable way a Christopher Ward watch could present to me. I still wouldn't buy it, but I think it's the best look possible.

For some businessman’s ego trip they are producing excellent quality, value for money, desirable watches.

If you like them - awesome. Buy them all! I'm not touching them with a 20 foot bargepole.
