How do you explain this hobby we share?
When asked by friends or family "why I'm obsessed with watches", I always find myself cornered with their questions 😅
"It's amazing a mechanical movement, with the movement of my hand I can have a precise chronometer, I can track time, you should see the movement it's marvelous" - yes but a 10 dolalrs casio can do that.
"It is just beautiful, look at that dial. Look at that sweeping hand" - huh?
Then I just say "you won't get it" and go to watchcrunch to find degenerates like me who are willing to spend their savings on a watch that only tells time 😁

I usually rattle off something about intricacy, soul, man harnessing nature, and end with "...they're just, I can't explain it."

I don't explain hobbies. They are hobbies; that is the explanation.
Its really about a quest to find the perfect watch but along the way you gotta kiss a lot of frogs and then stuff them in a watch box.
Passion should be felt, not explained.

I am happy enough that two other degenerates among my friends like watches. As for acquaintances, most of them get the hobby but they don't care enough to know how stunning are the Côtes de Genève or engraving on the bridges.
Oh, I just glared at the muggle who had the temerity to ask and ask them back about their money wasting (especially when they had to borrow $1.5k of my money) hobby.

The nice part about a watch hobby is that nobody needs to know. I don't start watch-related discussions, and an entire collection is easy to hide.
My wife is into plants. Should she complain about watches, which she hasn't so far, I would only need to raise an eyebrow and say: "It's not my hobby that took over the living room."
I ask them if they remember when they were kids and collected baseball cards, hot wheel cars, etc. I say it's the same thing, but as adults, I moved to watches. Without getting too deep, I think as a species collecting is in our genes and some have it stronger than others. It's tied to passion and something that is very hard to quantify (for me anyway). I say to myself all the time, not everything can or needs to be explained, I mean, look at us, we are on a rock floating in space rotating at 1,000 miles per hour. Why!! lol. So if it's watches that takes our minds to our happy place, we all deserve it, because tomorrow the aliens, may decide to end their ant farm experiment and put their foot down.
I just say it like this... Real men wear belts and behind every good man wears a good watch. You be respect and people will look up to you.
