I bought a lot of Air Jordan cuz’ I wanna be just like Mike !

What type or persons am I? Hmm… a person who works hard to attain goals in life, be it money, watches, shoes…”Women” lol just kidding but in honesty celebrity or athletes are just personas we like to aspire to be and one can only hope to emulate and aspire for good reasons …

This is the ad that made me buy an Elgin:

This made me buy an Omega:

But no one could get me to buy a Medana:

You are fighting the tide on this one. Celebrity has always been used to sell watches (and most other products). It is up to us not to be swayed. If someone gave me a Richard Mille, I wouldn't say "no". Neither do most celebrities.

The Sapphire RM’s are a thing of engineering beauty. A case milled out of one single piece of sapphire is not to be compared to your everyday stainless steel watch!

Wether people are fans of the brand or not, RM’s are very pioneering in their movements and design, as a watch brand.

I suppose wearing them or appreciating them for what they are and buying one for hype is two different things.

The feel of slapping one on your wrist is special

That's exactly it. I'm not sure I'd wear one, but I have to respect the effort and creativity that goes into these watches, plus their designs are almost an abstraction of a watch, as in horology imitating art.

Having celibrities as ambasadors or on billboards is not really to make people want to emulate the celeb but rather it is to get you to notice the product in a sea of adverts.

Take Tudor and David Beckham, having a giant billboard with Beckham on makes people notice the billboard. The bigger the celeb the more inpact the advert will have.

·

They’re just influencers...who have no influence on me. 😁

estoy de acuerdo with you... though the celebrities don't buy the watches they use at their events or sports; these are given to them for us to see, like, and buy (sponsorship)... Think about Formula 1. Just

after they get out of the car, the assistant pass them the towel and the watch... If you see personal photos of a trip with the family or something like that, you will see they are not wearing the watches they wear on the event, not even the same brand...

I never understood that. I want the watch Falco wore on Jacques Cousteau. But not because I think he was a celebrity, but was entranced by the whole show as a kid.

Yes but Mike wore his shoes 😂 hence I still wanna be like Mike 😜

RM sucks??? Really?

I bought a seamaster because I love James Bond, that makes me a wannabe 😆😆

·

i can't think of a single thing I've bought that was solely based on a celebrity endorsement.

There are things that I'll refuse to buy though because it has a celebrity attached.

lol, that's been my motto for most things. Take the gift and just sell it if it has retail value (although taxes on receiving gifts can suck, depending on what kind of "gift" it is).

·

I just don’t get these watches at all, they are huge, look cheap and can be copied by a factory in China and sold for a few hundred bucks

Still cheaper then the aston martin, so bargain James Bond vibes. 😄

Ps I always remember when Bond drove a Ford Mondeo, less stress and the kids fit in the back

·

In my experience celeb endorsements have been effective in making me aware of brands/products.

But I’ll only ever buy if I truly like it and not because so and so wears it.

·

Sometimes I wear celebrity watches based upon what they love to eat. In this case, Krabby Patties are always on the menu for me.

·

I can honestly say that I have never bought a product because a celebrity endorses it. Or because it is advertised on TV. Recommendations from friends and family have a far higher impact on me than marketing does.

·

Minor celeb in the watch world maybe: TGV. I bought a pair of Persol sunglasses because I liked his. They are cool.

I like to think I'm immune to the effects of celebrity endorsement, but I fear that my purchase decisions may indeed be subliminally influenced by them. Not necessarily so much the blatant advertising endorsements, but rather through seeing photos or videos of people I admire who happen to be wearing a watch that I like - that always seems to offer some validation to my choice.

At least give RM credit for picking a great movement maker for their watches - RM is not pioneering in their movements, but they use Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier which is owned by Parmigiani. Vaucher is one of the premier movement makers in the world. So RM has made a good business decision to have their movements made by the best.

I've never understood the fascination with (sometimes worship of) celebrities, especially the recent variety based on nothing but money (I hope the Kardashians are reading this thread😉). The ones with great talent, athletes, actors, writers, and scientists I admire but still can't fathom wanting to emulate their personal taste. Is their taste better than mine because they're famous? Not to me. I particularly don't comprehend the worship of fictional characters or actors without much acting talent but who play fictional heroes. James Bond is the best example of this type, all of whom are mysteries to me. The watches various actors wore who portrayed him weren't even chosen by them, they were most likely chosen by prop men or as paid advertising for product placement by the company. So why would I decide on my next purchase based on the watch that "James Bond" wore in the latest epic?

Anyway, just my 1 cents worth (definitely not worth 2🙄).

Seems like every other UK actor wears those)

To be fair, it's a nice sunglasses)

Well, depends on a product and a celeb.

I got into Moog synthesisers after listening to Porthishead's first album. I 100% bought a couple of boutique pedals just because some musicians i have respect for used them in their work. Could it qualify as an influence? I don't know really. At the end of the day i got my gear because i liked the sound and i don't have much hype pieces.

It's different with fashion and watches in particular. I don't think that there are celebrities who are endorsing my kind of style. I like simple and well-built clothes, vintage stuff and understated looks. So i just look like an average middle-class dude.

Image

(Random photo from google)

I don't think that there is too much to be endorsed by a celebs in this day of flex and bling)

I'm not saying i'm immune to external influence, but i've seen more watches i actually like here on WC (i've made a thread to discuss vintage inspired watches and i've got so much great options there) rather than in the commercials, watch spotting articles and collection videos.

Yeah, as a Brosnan's Bond fan, i obviously have a special place in my heart for Omega, but i also have even warmer feelings about Seiko's tool watches. And i don't want to wear a Seamaster, i'd rather went with a vintage Geneve.

I guess it's easier to live when your taste is completely outdated)

·

I’m not sure they are horological miracles, but I don’t find them appealing at all. Just the opposite - to me, they are hideous. I’m sure they look amazing to teenagers though 👍🏼

·

Like the Rolex Daytona is literally the most hyped investment watch, but honestly I have never even heard of this Paul Newman fellow. Strange how the hype machine works.

·

I bought Tony Hawk's Son's signature shoes. Mostly because his name is Riley and my name is Riley, and the shoes say Riley on them. I think that's pretty neat and they're comfortable to skate in so I think they were a good pickup!

For watches, if the design looks good and I'm a fan of the band/show/influencer/whatever I could be tempted.

·

My problem is I don’t know most of the celebrities I see. I’m always asking my wife “who is that?” When I see celebs interviewing on TV.

I do know Paul Newman, though. He and my dad were friends before PN went to Hollywood. I’m not interested in that Rolex though…

If somwbody gave me an RM, I'd flog it and buy something more tasteful.

Yeah but I'd definitely have to be given it, and then paid to wear it.
