I also prefer most of my watches without a date. Tho I wouldn’t want an entire collection without any date watches.
The date window on my SMP for example is really well done.

·

Not to mention the date ring on the Defy skeleton. That is a different animal altogether.

·

Yep, many collectors like to skip the date so they don't need to reset it coming out of the watchbox, but when you only have one or a couple of watches, the date complication is easy/nice to have... on a quartz with a quick-set function, they're great to have.

I only have a handful of watches. All my quartz watches have dates, and none of my mechanicals have dates. I chose the mechanicals for legibility (no date helps), symmetry (no date helps), and part-time wear (no-date helps).

·

The reverse is true for me. I started out by much preferring watches without the date complication, primarily because of the symmetry they offered. Over time, I have come to appreciate a well place discrete date window at the 6 o'clock position, and find that having the date available at a glance can be a very nice feature. I've even come to appreciate watches with both the day and date - my most recent purchase was an IWC Pilots Watch Chronograph with day/date at the 3 oclock position.

·

I love the date function on my watches. I pretty much seek it out on almost every watch I buy. I use it every day I wear my pieces.

·

I find I don't wear watches without the date, I have a couple, but never wear them.

For me the convenience of having the date at a glance far outweighs the inconvenience of setting the date.

I find the community's obsession with symmetry a bit odd... If symmetry trumps function, shouldn't people just buy large bracelets?

·

I don't have to have a date, but at some point in the day, I WILL look for it, usually more than once. It's a bit frustrating when it's not there. But not the end of the world.

·

I like a day, I even like a day/date, although several of my watches don't have them.

·

I don't care about day, but I have to have a date function, and will only make a few exceptions. As I mentioned here before, I have looked for a date on my left wrist for about 40 years. This is not something I will easily unlearn.

I can't speak for others, but for me, the visual appeal of a watch is a large factor, and symmetry can play a large role in the overall visual appeal. While I find that having the date available can be quite useful, I'm not prepared to accept that additional functionality if it comes at the expense of the visual appeal. There are lots of watches with date windows that implement the date in such a manner that the watch still looks well balanced, but there are also plenty of examples where that is not the case.

Although I tend to like symmetry in my watches, I also find that there are some designs that use asymmetry to their advantage. Studio Underd0g is an example that comes to mind. Their dials are nowhere near symmetrical, but they retain a balance that I find extremely pleasing.

I have a bit of both. But gang, I think we all ARE just buying big bracelets! 🥴

That said, I’ve worn one every day of my life since age 6 😁!

Ok here is the truth, I started with only wanting a date on my watches. Then something crazy happened when I turned 44. My eye said you don’t need to see the date. Since then I have two watches without dates. Now, it also means I started to look at watches cyclops lens.

·

If it's going to be a watch I might wear to work then a date is essential. I check the date just as much as the time. However, I only have one watch without a date, but would like to get another in the future. This is great for the weekend or when I'm off work. As then it helps me switch off better.

When I last took some time off mostly wore my Timex Expedition North Solar as it's time only, and that was great.

·

In my 4-watch collection I got 3 quartz with date and one mech without. But I wouldn't hate having a date on that one aswell. Maybe you go got to many watches if you can handle dates? 😜

·

Very much depends on the watch and how I feel that day. But I have a mixture and wear all of them.

If pushed I prefer no date as an asthetic.

·

I could go either way on dates but I hate Days. No days EVER.

·

I have no date, date, and day date watches.  For me it depends on the type of watch.  A fleiger?  No date. A quartz digital?  Day date.  An Orient Mako?  Day date. A dress watch?  It varies.  I have no strong preference either way.

·

I don't have as much practical need as I once since I seem to need the date when away from screens and calendars much less now. But I am still aware that the problems of ugly watches and mechanical watches running out of steam are their own problems separate from the date function. I choose to not buy ugly or mechanical watches anymore. Problems solved!

·

Day and date functions are great. They help remind me of the encroaching reality of the end of my mortality.

·

If given the option, I will go no date. While I don’t mind changing dates, it becomes a pain with a lot of watches.  whereas early on, I didn’t pay as much attention.

·

I've always preferred no date....if I have a choice.

·

Date's pretty useful to me at work and also when I look back on old wrist shots it helps me remember certain days. However I am also infront of a computer 80% of the time and the smart phone automatically dates pictures so...

Regardless, I'd love to own a watch with no date one day.

·

The date is secondary to me. If a watch comes with or without a date, it’s not the deciding factor for me. Do I use it if my watch has that function? Absolutely! If I’m using the watch, I make sure that the date is correct.

·

My opinion hasn’t changed but my eyes have And I can’t see the damn thing anymore….so no use Anymore!

·

I like a mix of both. Sometimes, on days when I feel like a sloth, a no date and day function watch will a blessing BUT all my watches have both day and date! LOL

Also, I’m getting old and my eye sight is no longer as good as before so I just refer back to my phone if I really need to know the day and date.

·

Interesting question because it led me to think about my own preferences.

I'm in the camp of those who don't mind a date or day/date complication as long as the window isn't placed in an awkward location, such as the one on the Seiko SCC Speedtimers.

·

I prefer to have the date on my watches. I find it very useful when signing documents in the office because I always sign and indicate the date on each signature if only to know when such document passed my desk later on since I sign a whole lot of them on a daily basis being in finance. Don't like to have to bother pulling out my phone each time I do.

·

I prefer and always have preferred no date. I can tolerate a date on some watches depending on how it's done.  The best dates are the ones that are at the 6 and incorporate it into the layout, such as how Helm does it.

·

I used to think every watch needed one. Now I think you only need one if it's important for your daily job. If you find yourself needing to know the date a ton of times a day, get a watch with a date. Otherwise you don't really need one. It's nice to just set a time only watch and not have to set the date as well.
