Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch Jupiter. Still a good choice?

It seems that a lot of brands recently started putting out watches that are, in a way, a direct competitor to the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatches. Even though the MoonSwatches have some quality issues, the fact that brands are starting to compete in that price range means that they did something right. Of course, the Omega on the dial is still one of the bigger reasons people are buying them. But at the end of the day, they are a decent 250€ watches with one of the most iconic chronograph designs, and you can elevate their look a lot by putting them on a fine leather strap like one of our customers did here with our Two-Stitch Diablo Orange. Did your opinion of the MoonSwatches change recently? Would you still take them into consideration at this price point?

No, my opinion hasn't changed, and I still don't think that the Moonswatch is worthy of consideration given the other options out there.  My thoughts can be found further in depth here:  https://www.watchcrunch.com/JBird7986/posts/nwa-the-other-other-moonswatch-alternative-the-speedmaster-homage-by-phylida-20315

I still like it and thanks to my good friend @UnholiestJedi I’m patiently waiting for mine… 😉🎉!!

·

I still like the MoonSwatch more than the Speedmaster, which is admittedly very little.

·

I also still like them. Are there better watches for the price? Yes, of course there are. Is it still a really fun watch? Absolutely.

·

Do you like Swatches? If so, buy all means get one. If not, you won't like the MoonSwatch, which is an Omega-inspired Swatch, nothing more, nothing less. There's room in my collection for one plastic quartz watch.

·

I won't turn away a free watch and that's pretty much the only way I'll get one.

·

Still a good choice?

Was it ever one?

·

My feeling have changed quite a bit. I was all in at the start and now I’m quite glad the were so hard Ti get hold of. All the faults from the pushers falling off to the colour running and staining wrists on the blue models makes me glad I don’t have one.
it’s a shame one of the first watches I bought was a second hand Swatch Irony that I bought to surf with, and really liked, but I just don’t trust these. Plus the difficulty in getting them really puts me off.

·

I cannot imagine how this could ever be a decent 250€ watch. There is nothing that materially separates this from a 20€ watch.

It's not a watch you buy for material reasons or value or whatever. It's a watch you buy for its design and because you like it. It's still bad for the money, but we all know that value for money isn't what dictates our watch purchases. If it did, we wouldn't be spending our money on watches beyond like 30€.

Not for me as the design doesn't specifically appeal to me, but clearly plenty of people like them and that is perfectly fine.

·

Everything I've read, watched, and heard, all says the idea was brilliant the watch is cheap and feable . I wouldn't spend the money

·

I didn’t like Swatches  when they were first introduced in 1983, and my opinion of them has not improved.

·

I like the Speedmaster design and the Moonswatch colors, so I think it would be a fine choice if you're into it.

Buy what you're into because nobody cares what you wear in real life.

·

No my opinion has not changed.  I really like my Pluto(the dwarf planet)Moonswatch.

At one point I considered collecting all of them, but then reality set in, considering Swatch won't allow it yet.

By the way, the strap you picked out is very complimentary, nice choice.

·

I have fun with mine and my wife wears it more often then I do.

I don't think I'll ever like the Speedy and I almost feel bad for that.

·

There are no watches that I’d stand in line for hours for, just to be disappointed when they sell out.

People are paying 2-3 times the MSRP on eBay for some models.

Looks like a fad to me, just my opinion.

But if it gets new people to wear watches, I suppose that’s a good thing.

I turned down an Earth at cost this weekend, so I guess that my mind is made up.

·

I found a boutique that had several references but tried one on and it just felt very cheap, not for me

There is a reason why it felt cheap…

·

I have a couple of Moonswatches and like  them for the money..

It didn't cost the Earth?

I don't think it was ever a good choice, unless you needed to ride the hype wagon.

There are so many better options for the same or less money. @Max has done some videos on the subject, along with many other youtubers, and the options are almost all better value.

The new Timex Q Chrono is where I would personally put my moonswatch money.

·

I wanted one of those.  But since they aren’t going to be available online and the closest Swatch boutique is hours away, I gave up on it and bought a Pagani instead.  It does look nice though.

·

It is indeed a beautiful watch. My issue though with this watch and Swatch watches is that the glass is easily scratched and therefore looks quite unpleasant very quickly. I remember I had two Swatch pieces before and both have unsightly deep scratches so I've just stored them and eventually forgotten them.  Buy two if you can,  so you can have a backup. This piece will break in no time. The glass is no good and the case and parts will crack.

I have the Jupiter and don't regret it. While I agree the Timex chronos as of late (and many other watches at this price) are clearly superior watches, I am of the opinion that one inevitably pays for the brand and additional premium for watches of cultural significance. The Moonswatch, despite its short comings, is one of the most significant watches to have arrived in the last few years (attracting many non-hardcore watch enthusiasts to this hobby). So instead of a more robust watch, you get the brand and moon watch association. I would bet that in 10 years, the Timex Q fades into oblivion but the watch world will still remember this joint collaboration between Swatch and Omega.

·

It serves a specific purpose. And not everyone has that purpose.

I have to say it does go well with some replacement straps. Like yours!

Glad you like yours! That's the beauty of this hobby, we all can and do have different tastes, and watches we get to enjoy.

I definitely won't argue that it's a great marketing, publicity, and otherwise smart collaboration between the brands at Swatch Group. And I agree that it is bringing people into the watch hobby. I just think for those of us that are already deep enough into this hobby to be on this site, there are probably better options when putting brand names aside.

I'm not so sure that the Timex Q line will go unremembered, it's been a pretty big re-issue push, and also has lots of non hardcore people wearing them, I think its possible they could go away, but Timex seems to be driving pretty hard to keep this rolling. (time will tell, and I'm clearly not able to see the future, so who really knows.)

I appreciate your take on all of this, thank you!
