Breaking the cardinal rule: match your strap to your belt/shoes

Is this a real rule to you? Or are you more, f**k it who cares!

I have a perfectly good brown leather strap on days I wear brown, but today this FKM tropic strap from StrapHabit was too good to change out. Seriously check them out on Amazon, you won’t regret it.

While we’re on the subject of taboos, dive watches with suits? Call me a rebel because I’m going desk-diving any day of the week.

Have a great weekend Crunchers 🍻

I believe the strap should match your shoe laces. And if you are me, who never wears shoes with laces, then f**k it, who cares.

As far as dive watch and a suit, I say, if you do not wear a tie, then f**k it, who cares. And if you wear a tie, then I do not know. I have not worn a tie since mid 90-s and I was not into watches then.

Have a great weekend.

Who f*ckin cares! Contrast is good!

·

I don't wear dress attire except on Sundays, and thank goodness I don't get judged for mismatching my belt, shoes & straps on that day.

·

No rule besides it’s nothing wrong with a little contrast in ya outfit😂. Also that’s nice combo I wouldn’t have swapped it out either.

Amen LOL.

As for me, having to wear a suit daily means damn right I’ll be wearing my favorite watches. 💥🔨

No one cares what's on your wrist, let alone your waist or feet! Having said that, I care! 😅 So I do make a token effort not to be too mismatched. I'll be sure to check out StrapHabit though, thanks 👍

·

They are conventions more than rules. If you are wearing black dress shoes you should not wear a brown belt. A leather watch strap should compliment your other leather accessories. They don't have to match.

Your examples above work just fine because they are complimentary. I have some red watch straps that I use with either brown or black shoes.

A SPORTS WATCH WITH A NECK TIE? WHAT KIND OF MAN ARE YOU?

A SPORTS WATCH WITH A NECK TIE? WHAT KIND OF MAN ARE YOU?

I wear a pony-tail and beard in the courtroom. Just about sums it up 😂

·

I've seen guys wearing 3 pc suit with Jordan hi-tops and MVMT wrist. What you're wearing is class.

·

Ahhh, so kind of no rules…..but! I wouldn’t wear a black strapped watch with brown shoes and belt 😁

·

If it slips under cuff it should be ok. Unless it is formal occasion, then diver no go IMO. Last thing you want is that bulky diver sticking out of shirt cuff, not classy

·

I match belts and shoes, but I don’t care about straps

·

I have pondered this questions for years. I have no answer other than to buy gray/taupe bands. I also have other unrelated and unanswered questions:

I’m not TGV, so rules shmules.

Great looking mod!

·

Well the strap is rubber so I don't think it really matters in this case! If I'm wearing leather, I try to match them. Then again my ring is rose gold but I have no rose gold watches (touche).

·

I'm partially color blind so 🤷‍♂️

·

Definitely agree with you on that strap. I have three from them, and will definitely order more.

·

I did match my brown two stitch belt plus a brown two stitch strap though completely by accident. I only noticed when my wife rolled her eyes and asked if I was going to start buying belts to match my straps now.

Your shoes should match your belt, but not the watch strap. I could be wrong

Sweet Pagani NTTD!

·

Don’t match- complement

·

I've never tried matching, nor have I cared. Also I've only heard about matching leather belts/shoes/straps, so even those who do care about what others wear (aka those who need to touch grass) shouldn't be too offended by your clearly rogue fashion tastes

99.99% of people wouldn't know nor care tho tbh

·

No rules. It reflects, I am going to solve these challenges. Then, it’s time to play!

Finding shoes and belt to match my blue Duro's navy blue croc is beyond my care factor. The Duro seems to work well enough with a blue flannel shirt and jeans, and given enough shirt cuff diameter can work with my blue pinstripe suit. If not, there are plenty enough other watches in my fleet, like one of the dressier #cardivostoks.

In a an old-school sartorial sense, the watch band, belt, and shoes rule assumed that those items were all leather.

Wearing canvas boat shoes? Any watch strap should do. Got a field watch on a nato? That's a working watch and the footwear matches the job at hand. Soldiers wore what was issued with no concern for fashion. Excepting the Nazis and their Hugo Boss uniforms of course. 😬

My interpretation is that your leather goods should match. All brown or all black. Similarly, your jewelry should match. All gold, all silver, or all two tone, not a mishmash of everything.

So if the leather shoes and belt match and the watch strap is not leather it becomes exempt. If you're wearing a sneaker, your belt doesn't have to match the shoes.

That said, I think that the watch should go with the outfit in color and style, whether it's matching or complimenting. The strap should also suit the watch.

When it comes to wearing a diver with a suit, knock yourself out. As long as it's not so bulky as to hang up your cuff, it's fine. These days so few people wear traditional watches that wearing any kind of wrist watch that isn't clearly resin is kind of fancy.

And of course, the primary fashion guideline is to know that rules so that you may judiciously break them. So dive into those spreadsheets!
