Hello everybody! ๐
My wife and I are expecting our first child! ๐ Due in November, amazing news and we are very excited!
An avid watch nerd, I am pondering what is the perfect Dad watch? This is where I need YOU! What is the best, gents?
Applying my collection to the problem I am thinking:
Phase: WHATISGOINGONTHISISTOOMUCHOHMYGODPOOP
This will be G-shock phase. It feels like it can take the poop, and it can take the clueless Dad.
Phase: Nappy in one hand, baby ready; I got this
This could be Rolex Explorer phase? Water (and poop?) proof, easy to wash, few moving parts.
Phase: Normalised and now a pro
Back to all the watches, life is good.
Please share your thoughts and guidance! This is just a bit of fun for the watch nerds in us ๐

This one: (And CONGRATS!)
Serious response....๐ซฃ๐
Any watch with "Li-ughts" as my daughter says. Sadly she gets more excited for these: (since she can push the button)
Professional dad here, an easy spinning bezel is going to be your friend here. At an early age my son loved spinning the bezels on my dive watches. Also chronos or digital are good since the buttons will be pressed, a lot.
I don't think there's anything as ubiquitous as a pair of white new balance for the watch world though.

Than these:
It's gotta be a G-Shock 5600.
It does everything you need it to, it won't break the bank and most importantly; it will likely never break and last pretty much as long as you will. It's dependable and not flashy.
Sure, as enthusiasts we want to have the Rolex, Omega or whatever for the romance & the story that dad was always cooler than the other kid's dads. But the vast majority of dads, it's a G-Shock 5600.
Or maybe now it's a <shudders> Apple watch.
Congrats! Not sure a watch is going to be much help raising a child! I might be wrong but cannot recall my Breitling Chronomats and Navitimers being much help during the years before our daughters finished university programs, before venturing out into an adult world. Good luck.
Yes, enjoy them! They seem to go so quickly.
As for the ultimate dad watch? I donโt know. Something you donโt mind getting a little roughed up, with at least 100m WR.
G Shock is the obvious answer and wonโt fail you. But if you have the money, Iโd say a Submariner. People complain about Rolex, and often for good reason. But to me thereโs no watch half so romantic as a well worn Sub. They just age so well, and you know it will stand up to whatever you need. Keep it serviced and you can wear it daily and on every one of your vacations. Thatโs the kind of watch your kids will remember you wearing. When youโre gone, theyโll look at that watch and think of you. To me thatโs what a dad watch is about.
Rolex. ๐ฅ DJ, OP, or Explorer! ๐ฅ๐ป
Iโm not a dad but a cool uncle i would say something with good water resistance so it can take all the piss shit and sick what you are going to be covered in and thatโs just the nappy changes ๐คฃ
First congratulations. A Sub, OP, perhaps moonwatch are classic for a reason.
General dad watches: The Apple Watch is the easy answer.
To me, the dad watch is perhaps the watch that was simply bought at a dealer based on looks and likely as a gift. Widely available, stores everywhere; think Breitling, perhaps a Chronomat. Maybe a SMP 300.
An Explorer or SMP white dial. Both work will in pretty much any situation.
Congrats mate ! To be honest I wore all my watches while my daughter was really young, just a 100m WR watch is more cautious. Mine loves lume ALOT and bezel a little.
Go for a solar quartz. You won't have much time to rewind or set time now! ๐ Look at the Sne573 on a rubber for those oops moments! It has a submariner vibe so you will feel rich but plenty in your pocket to buy dippers!
This one is perfect! It moves, it makes noises, itโs colorfulโฆ plenty to keep junior occupied!

For starters, it's G-Shock all they way and for all the reasons already mentioned. Wear it in the delivery room, and you'll be ready to conquer ๐คฃIn the end the ultimate Dad Watch will be which ever watch your child gravitates to, or most of all, the one your child gives you as a gift at some point.

Thereโs a question: what to wear in the delivery room. I had always pictured wearing the GMT Master II, to build more milestone memories with it. Any reasons thatโs a bad idea?
Congrats!!! We just welcomed our 5th kid last week so I have a little experienceโฆ this time around, I recently got a new Speedy was perfect for timing the time between contractions! I typically wear the Speedy everyday now, especially since I change out the straps a lot. In the past, I typically wore my Garmin Fenix 5 for making sure my Dad-Bod stays in shape. Makes it easy to clean wearing it in the shower when you have poop and spit up on you all the time. For the older kids, I wear my DIY Bronze diver for playing in the sprinkler, pool, beach and all wet summer fun. Then I have my Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical for mowing the lawn, yard work, and going to the dumpโฆ ya know, Dad-stuff. Finally, I have my grandfatherโs watch from 1952 for going to Mass on Sunday and other special occasions. As you can tell, I wear different watches for different Dad jobs!
It should be sooner than that TBH. ๐
Haha I hope so. I just jumped on the miyako list recently. Been on the list for the Orange Komodo for like a year and it still looks like I'll get the miyako wayyyy sooner.
Congratulations man!! ๐ฅณ
Can't believe it's almost been a year now, since my girlfriend gave birth to our first child - she just turned 11 months today!
Being a father is the best thing that has happened to me for a very long time. I couldn't be happier in this role, but to be brutally honest with you: It still feels kind of weird to say "my daughter" to someone else. Much like receiving a gift that is so awesome, you constantly have to squeeze yourself to check if you aren't dreaming.
Now, to answer your question: I'm now at stage 3, where I carefully try to wear all my watches in alternation again, like I did before. My daughter is now slowly starting to recognise the thing on my wrist, and even sometimes touches it. But it's to a point where I'm totally fine with it.
During the first couple of months though, I completely refrained from wearing a watch at home (only at work). If ever, it was one of my Casios since they're built to take quite a beating.
If you're asking for a true allrounder, like something that's built like a tank but could also be worn at formal occasions, my answer will always be: The Casio G-Shock GM-2100. This was the watch I was wearing during the birth of my daughter, and it will always have a special place in my heart.

You can't go wrong either way. If you want that specific piece to put that special memory on, absolutely. Save the Dad watch for your on-the-job training at home. On the flip side, let's say you get the Dad Watch - wear it for the delivery and put ALL your Dad adventures in to that watch. Then insead of one memory you have an entire journey with that watch. Could maybe even pass it along down the road. This is a great example of what makes this hobby so fun.
Being a new dad, all I can say is go for any of the Casio and Casio G-Shock models as they have never failed me once. I also daddy-tested Cat (by Caterpillar) and Chinese dark horse North Edge. So far they have been faithful, and able to take shit, snot, vomit and pee attacks in stride and never flinchedโค๏ธ

Oh that is a beautiful child. Five children! Congratulations! I have only two, would have wanted more, but that's not completely up to me to say is it?
My two daughters are both grown but are still local, and I also have certain watches for Sunday Mass or dinners out with them and my sons-in-law.
A quartz Seiko.
My Dad used to wear a Vulcain (not a Cricket) with a silver case and dial with applied indices, no numerals, on a mesh bracelet.
I've never found a photo of this watch on the Internet. It was a long time ago (late 60s) but I think I would know it if I saw it.

Thatโs cool. I donโt especially remember my dad wearing any watches other than in my late teens he wore a kinetic movement watch of some kind. I remember feeling the rotor, but it wasnโt a mechanical movement. Not sure what it was really.
This watch . . .
It tells you when to feed the baby with the baby bottle icons on 6 and 9. It even has a diaper change reminder icon at 12. Totally a dad's watch.
Iโd absolutely go digital here. My kids were small 25-30 years ago and my go to then was a Casio Wavecepter Solar with 5 alarms, a countdown timer, 200m WR, and an almost-never need for batteries. Add to this a backlit face that could be automated. Durable. I still have it.
As a Dad myself I go basic Casio or G Shock if you a hands on hard working person. Itโs a common man watch. The if heโs laid back or classy then something casual sporty then.
Hey Congratulations ๐๐พ๐ !!! Welcome to the Hardest Best Time if youโre Life ! So โฆ Any good Dive watch ! Maybe Quartz with a Light . Seiko , Citizen, Casio! If you have any dough left. Tudor Pelagos?! Take care and be Happy.!
