For me, the PRX (quartz) was 100% worth the hype and is still one of my top 3 watches in my collection. Same with the Bulova Lunar Pilot - way too big for most people, but if you have a wrist big enough to pull off such a watch, it's close to perfection. Last but not least, the Seiko Presage line. I was a tiny bit underwhelmed when I received my Cocktail Time Blue Moon. The hardlex crystal and the hollow end links are a big letdown for the price. However, the dial totally makes up for all that. I've yet to see a more vivid dial on any watch below $400. In conclusion, following a hype train is not a bad thing per se. If you're not sure about certain pieces, order them from sources like Amazon where returns are simple and straightforward!
Depends on how you define beauty. When we talk about dials only, the Seiko Presage line of watches definitely takes the cake. If we take beautiful complications, the F.P.Journe Souveraine is the most beautiful watch in this category. And overall (dial, case, bracelet), the Cartier Santos wins the appearence contest.
2007-2018 me would've 100% agreed with you. 2018-now me - not so much. I've got 2 Seikos which I absolutely admire, but the value-for-money aspect isn't as big of an argument as it used to be. Top that with QC issues and subpar build quality, and you've got all the reasons why Seiko is not on my wishlist anymore!
Not really that odd, but I wouldn't buy most of Tudor's line up simply because I absolutely dislike snowflake hands. To me, these are just so impractical and make telling the time needlessly more complicated.
Speaking of odd reasons though, I've had a co-worker telling me they would never buy a Casio, since they're technically not a watch company but rather an electronics manufacturer.... 😬
Hell yeah, same birth year as mine! 💪
What did you pay for that one? I noticed it's a bit of a rare model, the ones that are available are well beyond what I would pay for one...
I'm a big fan of Tissot and my PRX analogue quartz is one of my Top 3 pieces in my collection. But I think the ongoing hype and success of the PRX line has made Tissot greedy and unreasonable lately, and with the release of the digital PRX, they've finally "jumped the shark" for me.
There are so many things I dislike about this watch:
a rectangular digital LCD being put in the standard round case of the analogue models, instead of creating a slightly different case for the digital model where the digital module wouldn't look so "lost". It's even more off-putting on the 40mm variant!
The module is extremely basic and just displays the time. You can only see the date by pressing a button, which to me is an absolute NO-GO.
The fact that the digital model costs as much as the analogue quartz variant. Yeah, I get that Tissot don't manufacture every single sunburst dial by hand, and that the handset used in the PRX is pretty much "off-the-shelf". Still: A high-quality Ronda quartz movement with EOL functionality, a beautiful METAL sunburst dial, a date wheel and 3 metal hands are worth more than a cheap, digital LCD module - no marketing spiel by Tissot can convince me otherwise!!
