Rolex Submariner

my cousin says its boring, what do you think about the sub?

love the cyclops, hate the minute hand, not a fan of a round hour markers, but the overall looks of a sub is very appealing.

I'd say it's not boring, it's understated. It's a tool watch, it's made for a purpose an it doesn't need and extra bling. I think that all black submariner is the best one.

Certain watches are iconic! The Submariner is one of them. I own the no date above and absolutely love it.

·

As above this is an iconic watch ,Ok blancpain built the first serious diver but Rolex was second only 1 yr ,if this watch is boring why are there so many copies/homages to it

Classic, but boring.

·

A classic design certainly owing much to the blancpain undoubtedly.

Often copied of course. Loved by many.

I will never own one because for me it has too many negative connotations over the last ten years or so.

It's a great watch but it's just too bloody obvious. There are many many better options out there.

·

It’s a watch made for professional. It’s not meant to be fancy. It’s suppose to be easy to read underwater. I took it to my free-diving and it did it’s job.

It’s one of the most popular watches in the world for a good reason.

From a view of a diver who has done over 200 dives, it’s far from boring. 😄

I agree with your cousin.

·

It is a historically significant watch. From the dial, case, movement to the hands you could have a decent discussion. For the uninformed it is just another watch. As you try other watches you will realize how brilliant this watch design actually is. It is hard to make boring look good.

I don't intended to own one either, but what do you mean by, negative connotations ?

I mean that to me it gives off the wrong image. It is not classy because it is often worn by people trying to portray themselves as something they are not. It is too obvious a choice and too flash.

In addition if you wear one in the wrong area of town you are asking to get mugged.

It is a tick box for someone trying to show off.

That is not to say genuine collectors or owners who have inherited a submariner are wrong but most people with a submariner on their wrist are neither of those things.

I think that for the uninformed it is not just another watch? For them it is a famous watch that they would love to own to show off their status and it is one of the few watches that they could actually name and identify.

·

Rolex has the homage curse.

·

It's a classic design, I seeing them in person is a thrill!

·

Boring yes. Classic yes. I wouldn’t mind owning a no date sub but it’s not something I’m actively seeking.

·

People that hate on Rolex usually can afford it anyhow.

·

Very well made watch and keeper for sure!!..if I could I would own just one Rolex it would honestly be vintage..so many watches have great specs now and can be copied easily..vintage Rolex is where the real Rolex roam

Love the 124060!

·

It’s the most copied watch in the world for a reason, I presume you educated your cousin?

·

I wouldn't call any watch boring. Saying something is boring says more about the person's state of mind than the object. You have to bore yourself!

To me the classic black SS submariner is the vanilla of watches. That's not meant to be an insult. Gray1972 joked it was the magnolia. I think that is spot on.

The modern sub is the little black dress of watches. It's so ubiquitous it's almost under the radar.

It's the obvious choice for many, which makes it the least appealing choice for many others.

Great point. So many mimic the Submariner. My Certina gets a lot of wrist time.

·

It is boring, but that’s exactly what makes it interesting. I like it

·

Yeah, it is boring, but only because it has been in production for a long time with relatively little changes. That's not a bad thing.

·

All watches tell the same time, yet not all are the same!

·

It's easy to see how someone could think the classics (in any category) as boring. I think this is because they are 1) popular and therefore perceived as an obvious choice and 2) their design usually influences many watches and so their design fundamental become ubiquitous via that influence.

But no one should dismiss the classics. They achieve that status for a reason. They simply work when on the wrist, today, tomorrow, 50y ago, 50y from now.

·

your cousin is boring 😀

·

I think it's classic boring

·

Just look at how many subs are already in the comment lol

·

Yeah…hate to say it’s boring in my opinion. But, hey…I’m the guy who likes the gold 36mm day/date.

·

boring but nice.. have one myself 😂

·

It is classic, sone days is boring some it ks exiting, but it is never out of place. Did he wear it/own one before? Because when you have it gives you always good sensations

·

What's a reasonable purchase price range for one of those in decent shape? I'm looking at one that's identical.
