IWC is technically Swiss since Schaffhausen is in swizterland; they did provide the axis during WWII tho and keep hanging onto that heritage and language. So I guess they are an honorary German brand

Not sure you can compare these brands since they sell in different price tiers

When did IWC become German? It like comparing a Jetta, to an M3, to a Porsche GT3, then the weird car from another country. Also GO for watch per dollar.

Replace IWC with Glashütte Original....

Sinn makes good watches IMO as long as its not that bland-ass, near-identical-to-a-Daniel-Wellington 556

Nomos has fun designs with horrible lugs but are thin which is nice!

ALS makes some incredible stuff with interesting dials, but are too expensive for the vast majority of people to afford

IWC (a better choice would be Laco or Stowa), from what I know makes well finished watches, that IMO are boring as hell and all look the exact same. And cost as much as a Rolex (Just get a Laco; they even have cooler names!!!)

Plus trying to distill the history of German watchmaking into 4 brands? What about a balance of East and West? It’s far too complicated to just have a poll with three German brands, one which is younger than the fall of the Berlin Wall despite being from Glashütte, and a Swiss brand.

Schaffhausen is in Switzerland.

I find all of these to be makers of hideous watches but if the gun was to my head I think I could find a tolerable Sinn. I'm not so sure about the others. Note that IWC is generally just boring with the hideousness being the gargantuan scale.

Replace IWC with Glashütte Original please and thank you. Dollar for dollar they’re the best luxury German watch manufacturer.

Hanhart

Out of the watches brand on your list I have only experienced Sinn. The two watches I have I’m very happy with. Perhaps a Sinn, Hanhart, Stowa, Muhle Glashutte would be a better comparison.

My head says ALS - hard to beat for design and quality. I don't mind a bit of quirk but I'm partial to an acrylic crystal and a tool watch, so my heart is with Sinn.
