New to watch collecting.

Hello from Scotland.

I've always loved wearing watches, but have never been precious about what's on my wrist. That all changed before Christmas, when for a big birthday my family presented me with a lovely Omega De Ville Prestige automatic chronometer  in silver with a blue dial that changes shade with the light.

I love the Citizen eco drive with the canvas strap, it's my go-to watch for everyday use.

That is, until my new purchases arrive.  I've just taken the plunge and ordered up a pair of Seiko watches to kick start the JDM collection.

The two Seikos I've ordered are the 5 Sports GMT  SSK005K1 in Mikan Orange, and the Solar Prospex Chronometer Sumo SSC757J1.

Hopefully I've made a couple of good choices, because I'm a fan of the windable automatic models, and I can see the Solar Sumo being another everyday favourite.

4 super watches to start your journey. Nice to see a de ville you don't see many about, a bit of a sleeper in the Omega range but a lovely timepiece, and a 5 gmt, a nice bit of colour for summer fun. Great selection👌

Welcome to the party!

Those are a great start.

Thanks, appreciate that buddy.

The thing is that I don't want to collect watches that I won't wear.  I've probably had the De Ville on for about 6 or 7 occasions in as many weeks, and between the Citizen and the Sumo I can see as being worn to work daily.

The GMT will be my working away from home timepiece, so I think it's probably time to think hard about what else will compliment what I already have and will definitely see some use???

I'm leaning towards getting a Mission Impossible G- Shock and maybe a sleek Bauhaus or similar for a change of dress watch from the Omega.  It'll definitely be a work in progress.

Welcome to WC, love the Omega.

Welcome to WC, love the Omega.

I really wasn't sure there'd be much love for the Omega out there, as it seems to be a bit of a forgotten piece amongst the other bigger sellers of the brand.

I love its simplicity, and it'll definitely stand the test of Time...also the movement is a beauty from what I've been hearing.

You are off to a pretty incredible start.

Welcome to WC!

Hey hey!

Welcome from one newbie to another. We seem to live parallel lives. I've got a handful of eco-drives, an omega desire, and just took delivery of some familiar Seiko models. You'll love the orange gmt. A little bold, but super tasteful.

Welcome to WC, bud! Cool vintage Sekonda too. 🍻

Welcome! Nice watches and cool camera! (I think there must be a connection between watches and cameras because every other person in this community (including myself) seems to take pictures using a camera/phone). Enjoy the free snacks :D

Wow! Amazing! Looks like our fathers had somewhat of a shared story. My Dad graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, and then served our country's Navy. His highest position was as Chief of Naval Staff, which is next in command to the Flag Officer in Command. Respect indeed to our Fathers. 💪🤝
Yeah, when my Dad gave it to me, the crystal looked cloudy on the sides. So, I brought it to my watchmaker just recently, and he buffed the outer side of the crystal. Looks much better now, while retaining its scratches, and its "battle scars". Looking forward to your shots soon. 👍

Hi Jonathan, I was going to start a separate thread but thought I'd reply with pics 📸 for you on this one.

Here's a few shots of the Sekonda, but tbh I think it's just a plain quartz model that my Dad picked up cheaply as a daily timepiece.

It did get me thinking about his time at sea, and then I remembered I have a box of my Grandfather's old Naval war medals and a couple of pictures from WW2 as a naval officer onboard the HMS King George V, and coincidentally a visit of Winston Churchill and King George VI to meet the troops.

There's also a picture of my Dad at the wheel as a very young Deck Officer ❤️.

Wow! What an awesome heritage you have, bud! Salutes to your Grandfather and Father. Such honorable men. 🤝
Your Dad's Sekonda may seem to be "just a plain quartz model that (he) picked up cheaply as a daily timepiece"... but it still went with him on his many journeys, and for many years I imagine. If it could speak, for sure it had tons of stories to tell over a pint of ale or beer. 😉🍻
My Dad's Citizen dress watch, also has a quartz movement. For me, it doesn't diminish the invaluable and priceless place it has in my collection. 😉

Image

Just had its battery replaced last October in time for my nephew's wedding. Since that month, it's just -1sec vs. an atomic clock.

Cheers Jonathan 🍻.

Love the tank shape...definitely food for thought. Perhaps I'll treat myself to something similar in paying respect to our forefathers 🤔.

As a side note, although I wasn't a pilot in the RAF I still managed to get several back seat trips in the F3 Tornado during my 10yrs on 111(f) Squadron.

I'm really kicking myself that I never had an awesome timepiece adorning my wrist in the only picture I have of me in the flying outfit...how good would that have been. (Apologies for the poor pre-digital grainy picture 😪).

Yeah, why not?! 👍 A timepiece to commemorate your 10 years in the 111(f) Squadron, to honor your forefathers, and to pay tribute to all of you serving your country patriotically. That would be an epic story to tell your kids, and in time, when you pass on your timepieces to them, they too will honor their heritage. 🤝

Great Omegas -- my Dad got the white dial DeVille a few years ago and my grandfather just picked up a black dial in December.

·

The Omega De Ville is an un-appreciated model of Omega and I don't see a lot of them here.

·

A Deville is one hell of a gift. Welcome and enjoy!

Hey Josh, absolutely it is.

It was my 50th birthday present that my wife and kids all chipped in for.  It was totally unexpected, and they absolutely smashed it out of the park with the blue dial and the very understated elegance of the De Ville 😍.
