This will be a day long remembered... AKA, trading in my final Swiss watch for yet another Grand Seiko

Shameless plug:  If you're in California - hell, even if you're nowhere near California - come to the SoCal WatchCrunch Meetup on Saturday, June 3rd.

https://www.watchcrunch.com/HotWatchChick69/posts/socal-meetup-free-drinks-free-food-and-a-special-guest-34059

  • Free food

  • Free flowing alcohol

  • @Max will be making a special guest appearance

  • A gentleman who is one of only 2 ADs in America for Habring and Kudoke and a bunch of other awesome independent brands will be there

  • Oh, and did I mention the free alcohol?

****

You remember this scene in Star Wars, where Darth Vader is celebrating his impending victory?

That's how I felt as I traded in my Omega Seamaster 300 Heritage...

Image

...  for the GS SBGM247...

Image

I've finally done it.  I have finally, finally purged my collection of all things Swiss.  I somehow feel as though I've achieved something that few others have.  I've gone full otaku!

Image

But, in the back of my mind, over the past several weeks, I do occasionally worry.  Would Kirk Lazarus say to me...

Image

On a recent outing to South Coast Plaza with @STAYINGWARM and @VictorAdameArt and @ckim4watches, I came across the L.U.C. Perpetual Twin...

Image

My god, it's gorgeous!  But, it's Swiss!

On another outing with @Edge168n, I came across the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda...

Image
Image

I have never seen such a beautiful movement! But, it's Swiss!

I don't know, man.  One day, am I going to wake up, and realize what I've become?

Image

Have you ever gone too far?  Celebrated too early?  In your hubris, did you fail to understand Obi-Wan when he said...

Wait a minute… that isn’t Star Wars!

·

I have a bad feeling about this

·

The 9SA5 movement is much sexier than that parmigiana cheese movement, just add one of those to the collection. I'd recommend the SLGH009 (with the special heat blued screws) but they are all sold out. The SLGH013 is a good close second.

·

Tell me more about this aversion to Swiss.

·

Man I hate that I’m gonna miss this meetup. This better become tradition.

Wait a minute… that isn’t Star Wars!

It’s, uh, the scene where Lando fights The Bullet Farmer. Geez…

·

I only own 1 Swiss watch, a Tissot Classic Dream quartz watch (ETA movement.) I love it. It rarely ever loses any time. What's wrong with Swiss?

·

I must say that my Japanese, German, and Scottish watches pack a punch but I'm not a freak–I'll never go full Swiss-less...or will I?

·

Image

Yep, gotta do what you gotta do… I would pick the SBGM247 over the other as well.

·

Hey man, hope the meetup goes well 🙏

·

I was under the impression that Omega had better value retention than GS. They are still great watches but depreciation magnets.

·

Welcome to the family 👍🏼

CANNOT stop laughing at the Tropic Thunder reference. Well done sir

Yeah, EVERYBODY is smitten with the Heritage line of watches because of the whole seasons thing and nature and whatnot. But, honestly, my favorite GS watches are their sports watches!

  • They seem familiar... diver, GMT, chronograph...

  • But, there's just something a little... off about them

  • Like, look at this SBGA463...

Image
  • Typical Submariner homage, right?

  • But, then, you take a closer look, and the hands are all funky, the coin-edge bezel is a bit weird, the gold logo is a bit too blingy, and it's 44.3mm diameter!!!

Image
  • But, it's titanium, so it's light as a feather

  • And I've found that every time I look down at the watch now, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT

  • It's a spring drive dive watch, that only you know is out of this world, and if anybody were to ever ask you what it is, you can just say, "Oh, it's a Seiko," and that's the end of the awkward conversation!

Or if your partner ask if you just buy a new watch. You can say, it is Seiko. 😂😂

But yes! Most people know more about their heritage collections. the only sporty one that I like is their SBGM001! Close to what you have there.

I've always thought GS is a great dress watch. I feel this would be a good option:

But realistically, I'm more likely to get something older or straight vintage. It's where I'm leaning...

You can always try to get Grand Seiko First.

By the way, did you ever get resolution on the whole weird QR code warranty thing? Is it fake? Or is it real?

Wow you remembered! Thanks pal. I heard of rumours that Shanghai Boutique only give Electronic Warrenty via QR. But it is too risky for me.

End up I gave those a miss!

I even wrote in to GS about the use of Electronic Warrenty! But GS support didn't even reply me. 😔😔😔😔

Matches the Oris Kermit pretty well. Just sayin

That’s the spirit!

Oh by all means Seiko in general is an option. Even King Seiko is in the mix. The only thing getting in the way is my propensity for dive watches. Who knows where the wind will take me. I need atleast another year to save funds in any case.

·

Excellent GS watch you got there, congratulation!

And I would not worry too much about the CoO of your next purchases, after all this is nothing that a little bit of mental manipulation trickery can't fix.

·

I don't see why you shouldn't go full retard 🤔 Maybe you have just been living a lie until now?

I might change your mind at some point. But so what 😊

·

I think Grand Seiko has you on retainer, dude! 😂😂😂🤙

·

Ah.. General Tarkin : Ruthless, calm and respected.

Vader: ..force - choking an arrogant middle management empire drone who really had it coming ..

Tarkin: Vader! Enough of this! Release him!

Vader : quickly releases him

How cool was Tarkin, right?!

Anyway. Back to the big event:

I super double double.. can’t go.

As soon as I slightly started to mull my options to come down, I looked closer at my schedule and realized not only am I on-call and not only am I working nights, but my kid also has a swim meet that whole weekend. So crazy work + any free awake time is in the bleachers at a pool.

I super extra double 100% can’t come. 😫🤬

So plz Brian, stop! … stop making this festival more and more awesome!

It’s on track for the next promo to be that every attendee gets a free GS Heritage model…( since all getting an Evo9 might be excessive!)

·

All the Star Wars mind trick memes feel off... this is starting to feel more 1984 "2+2=5!"

Guess that's why they call it "added value" 😅

Even further bummed I'm missing this meetup!

OMG... that would be amazing! I could totally be a GS Ambassador! Though, having someone like me be their brand ambassador would be as good an idea as it was for Victoria's Secret to sign up Bob Dylan to leer menacingly and creepily into the camera as girls 1/4th his age walked around in lingerie! Not even joking!!! This actually happened!

I can't! Not until March 2024 at the earliest!

Mate, the day you start putting just a one more thought towards your material possessions, you will become a collector instead of a hoarder

And curating a collection is like renovating the house. Just when you think it's over, it pulls you back in with something completely unexpected. Couple of times I've been coming home from the mall or postal office thinking, hey, I'm finished with my wardrobe, now I have a perfect wardrobe that fits my style, and then boom - I realised that all this time I wanted a nice blazer. And now anxiety kicks in... I was so set and done. I choose my style to the rest of my life... How can I put a blazer in a wardrobe full or denim, corduroy, flannel lumberjack overskirts and other 'workwear' stuff? But the blazer is nice... But man, it will destroy the whole theme of a collection...

That's why you shouldn't have a theme, concept or even be mindful about your consumption habits. Ignorance is bliss. Don't listen to your inner monologue it has no sense.

You know what's better thing to do? You should go and buy another watch! Hooray to maximalism! Hoarding IS the future!
