Cool Wall of Watches vol 3 (CWoW)

Good day Crunchers. Today is the day... the day I really mix up the vibes. I come to you today with a true wild card. As Alfred Pennyworth once said, โ€œ...some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.โ€ Today...I am one of those men. BEHOLD! The Richard Mille RM88. I believe this is the most recent creation of RM. The mad lads are the watchmakers for many F1 drivers, all-time great tennis great, Rafal Nadal.... and a bunch of other people who can afford them. A true racing machine that you can wear on the wrist. As you can see (or not, as your eyes may no longer be communicating to the rest of your body by now), a lot is going on with the RM88. Here is a link to the watch's page if you would like to read about the details: https://www.richardmille.com/collections/rm-88-automatic-tourbillon-smiley So I am expecting so spicy takes. I can see pros and cons that may lead to some intersing discussion. Have fun.

But I am a Pennyworth man!!!

ยท

These RMs are hit and miss for me. Some designs I like, some not so much. This is one I donโ€™t like so Iโ€™m going uncool.ย

ยท

See, I would have gone with a less flamboyant model, as even the most stylistically challenged among us will be able to see what a steaming pile this is. Anybody who wears this thing is instantly proclaiming themselves to be a massive douche. I understand that opinions vary from person to person, but the people who disagree with me are wrong. Just plain wrong.

Had you chosen one of the less loud models, I would have been able to accept that some horrible people might like it. But thisโ€ฆjust no.ย

ยท

Damn, I clicked sub zero by mistake. It's too easy with these polls. Who thought putting a broken charm bracelet inside a watch was a good idea? I might buy something like that for kicks if it were a $20 novelty quartz.ย

ยท

Finally one for the left side of the wall! ๐Ÿ‘

I am sure some people would love this kind of design from RM, but it isn't for me... Just don't understand what it is trying to do

ยท

Somewhere between a cockroach and the white stuff that accumulates in the corners of your mouth when you're really thirsty.ย

ยท

Like any god eldritch horror looking at this watch for too long will do damage to your sanity.

I have the opposite take. I think RM is basically a big joke on the overmoneyed, but this one is redeemed (somewhat) by having playfulness about it such that the wearer is actually in on the joke.

This one makes me smile at least a little, something that the normal overpriced hunks of handmade oversized gumball machine nonsense plastic watches do not do. The pretension is so much less heinous here.

I am oddly channeling Paul Fussell who had a book on how the worst things were not just tacky or tasteless but also presented with a veneer of the opposite, ascribed with sophistication, quality, history, or whatever virtuousness they in fact profoundly lacked. This is not that.ย

Thinking of quadrants of society, ranked by how greatly I would not wish to converse with them, the wearer of this just does not fall in the most undesirable segment. I better quit before I convince myself this is actually cool. Just uncool. But so close.

Ah, while I was prattling, @Velomax posted a fine example of the most uncool of watches. Can you imagine being trapped in a conversation with the owners of that kind of thing? Having to pretend that there was some merit to that?

ยท

Well done. Now Iโ€™m no longer concerned that the un cool and seriously un cool columns will be empty.ย

ยท

Has Invicta bought RM?

ยท

Iโ€™d wear that for 100 bucks. ย Iโ€™m guessing it cost 200 times thatย

ยท

Canโ€™t afford it even if it looks good.

ยท

The watch looks like something from a gumball machine. It looks like a kid's toy. If it were $5 I would say it was about right.

However it has a pine apple in it and RM have the audacity to charge over 1 million swiss francs excluding taxes and they are making 50 of the things. That's some level of insanity. For the sheer madness of it all that makes the watch sub-zero in my book.

ยท

I really want to put it in the cool column, but it's just so EXTRA. Just like extra all around. My eyes rolled so hard at the price I can't even remember how expensive it is, it hurts to see something that expensive. Judging from pics, you can barely even tell what time it is!

ยท

It's as if RM recently discovered the existence of fridge magnets and drew artisitc inspiration from how the other 99.9% live.

Interesting how the most legible part of the dial is the RM logo. That says something about how the watch will be viewed. A casual onlooker may be tempted to ask "what the F*** is that?" to which the owner may reply ย "It is a Richard Mille, of course!", at which point the viewer is expected to grovel, scrape and I-doffs-me-lid-guv'nor.

ยท

Yeah, I understand all of that and you're right. Still, I look at someone wearing a Richard Mille and think, "what a loser." Sure, an incredibly rich loser, but still a loser. I have no jealousy, no admiration, and they lose integrity. If someone gets filthy rich legitimately (without exploiting anyone) then, by all means, buy your jet, and your fancy cars, and your big houses, your APs and Rolexes, but putting a million dollars on your wrist shows you have more money than sense or taste. And it would seem that's their intention.ย

ยท

Is this a contest between RM and Jacob & Co to see who can make people with more money than sense buy completely ridiculous-looking bubblegum machine toys?

I picture RM and team sitting around the table and discussing how far they can go to prove that wealth does not equal taste.

Maybe there should be a thread for Watch Design Crimes and Misdemeanors...

Thatโ€™s very charitable of you, I think RM is super-serious about how great their watches are. I think they believe theyโ€™re making some of the best watches in the world. ย They most likely also believe their watches are underpriced and represent great value.ย

ยท

Seriously uncool. However, what would people think of the IWC Petronas, sticking to the F1 theme?

ยท

Richard Mille, for people with more money than sense. It's overpriced crap IMO. Sorry for the hate but I just can't take most RM seriously.

For that kind of money you'd be better off buying one of Patek Philippe's really high end watches stuff or watches on that caliber.

ยท

The point driven home with unerring accuracy - may as well wear a gold-plated turd on your wrist that you paid $1M for to show that you have so much money you don't care if you throw it away on garbage.

ยท

We are voting on this one watch with the pink flamingo and rainbow happy face and cactus above, not Rickie Millie as a whole, right?ย

Personally I can't bring myself to hate the kitschty RM88 because, as I said, it's fun. It's a cheery bright spot in a world of joylessly dour haute vanities. I don't think I have any such reservations about condemning the entire rest of their catalog (minus their wacky retracting fountain pen which also stands on the line between genius and insanity).

Of course votes can't be changed, but rest assured I overwhelmingly loathe RM too. The RM88 suits their nouveau clintele and makes great use of the abundant space. This is their one model where I laugh with the owner instead of at him.

ยท

I canโ€™t afford it and Iโ€˜m a cheapskate. Hahahaha.ย
It looks like my little pony vomited all of itโ€™s lucky charms out. Itโ€™s very very busy on the dial ย

ยท

Ugly as sin! Completely frigid.Nothing else to add.

I can't loathe RM for catering to a target market that is not you or I. Whatever left field stuff RM and some others come up with, their businesses do not seem to be struggling.
