Who wants to play a game? A Game of Lie-To-Me (h/t to the Artist-Formerly-Known-As-DeeperBlue)

Since the thread is getting a little unwieldy in the old post and folks are dropping off a bit, I've decided to give it a fresh start in a new thread!

https://www.watchcrunch.com/Eris_Goddess_of_Discord/posts/who-wants-to-play-a-game-21369

Quoted directly from our patron saint of chaos, the Artist-Formerly-Known-As-DeeperBlue, (@Eris_Goddess_of_Discord)

But it's only a couple of weeks till Christmas so tis the time for games, and I promise this one is very friendly and low commitment! No dressing up or food products required.

While half of you go look for the 'Mute' function let me explain the game to the rest of you.

This one is called 'Lie to me'.

I basically tell you three facts about me. Two are true, one is a lie. First person to spot the lie then gives 2 truths and 1 lie about themselves and the rest of us to have a go at spotting the lie again and we just keep going until we get bored or decide we know more about eachother than we are comfortable with. Can be watch related or not.

EDIT: Actually, instead of the first person to get it right being the next to go I think whoever set the three facts gets to choose the next to go out of all those who gave correct answers. E.g. I get to choose who goes next from those who spot my lie.

Having been directly deputized by @Eris_Goddess_of_Discord and taking my sacred lying duties seriously, so here's mine.

1. I was a top twenty ranking StarCraft player in North America, high enough ranked that I seriously considered deferring university to go try my luck playing the game professionally in South Korea.  I only stopped when I realized that my fast twitch reflexes were going at the age of 18.  They called me Ace of Blades.

2. During the financial crisis, I left my first job out of college in Boston (management consultant) to raise and deploy a distressed debt fund specifically focused on bailing out small to mid sized manufacturing companies who ran into working capital problems after GE Capital failed.  They called me the Copley Reaper.

3. When I was twenty, I ended up talking my way to a vodka tasting in a steak aging room in New York City with someone that I eventually learned was the most well connected mafioso in St. Petersburg.  He called me "moy kitayskiy drug" which I  believe translates to "My Chinese Friend."

who says I would have listened to my parents anyway?  do you have any idea how dumb 18 year olds are?

😂😂😂

No. 1.

The rest are listed on your resume.

Perhaps I have listed 1 on my resume!

It is hard to list "Reasons why I almost didn't go to college" on a one page vitae.

3 is a lie

·

First vote for number 3!  I wonder what about that story makes it seem so truthful?

·

Well, I confess to not getting that gamer nickname, it doesn’t really lend itself to an elite Starcraft player.
But My rationale for voting for 2 is that I‘m powerfully willing 1 and 3 into being true and you believing they are true.
So staying with unglamorous (for my simple brain) 2 being the lie.  😃

·

Crap, the pic in your bio is a JLC… my pick makes even less sense

😂🤪🤞

Impeccable logic!  Were we all that logical!

Oh, I'm so very interested in the logic here.  How does a JLC inform your choices one way or another? 😉🤣😉🤣😉

Did he get it right?

I'll give it a couple more hours for responses, then let people know.

In the mean time, what's your guess? 😉

Number 2 is also my guess, I don't think that was your nickname

I’m always firmly tongue in cheek, so please don’t take offence -  JLC are awesome and epic watches that I wish I could afford.   But a story about  ‘amazing investor, yada yada yada’ does mesh well with my JLC preconceptions.
So.  Despite (tenuous) evidence to the contrary, 2 is the lie, my steak eating, mafia affiliated, beast mode gamer friend.

No offense ever taken.  I love the twisted chains of logic!

I’m super late to this but I think 1 is the lie, the last 2 are very specific and amazing if they’re true.

The final count.

StarCraft Boi - 5

Vulture Fundman - 4

Fredo Corleone -1

And the verdict?

Number one is...true.  I was ranked 25 in the North American ladder circa 2000ish and thought, in my infinite teenage wisdom, that I could hang with the big boys.

I then realized that being top thirty American in StarCraft is like being top 1000 in Korea.  And as I hit my 18th birthday my teenaged reflexes began to slow and I realized the end was nigh.  @Aurelian , I totally put this on my resume under "Interests."

Number three is totally true.  It was a very odd summer and I, fortunately, have heard nothing since then.

Number two is true in every respect except for 1.  It wasn't a distressed debt fund, it was an NCAA betting pool that went long Davidson in the 2008 NCAA tournament to get to the Elite 8 on the back of a then unknown Steph Curry.  That savviness earned me the "Copley Reaper" moniker.

We then proceeded to sell the Davidson position and back the other Carolina Team, the Tarheels to get to the finals.  We lost a 15x return made on Davidson to freaking Kansas in the Final Four.  One of the pool participants, having turned $5000 into $75,000 and then into zero, wrote on the memo section of the check "Schmuck Tax" (don't worry, it was the partner of a consulting firm.and very clearly in good fun).

It took me another 6 years to start a fund with a much less high octane strategy.

Sports betting is a hell of a drug.  I prefer watches instead these days.

@witcher.watcher @street.credor @tainanball @Fieldwalker congratulations on the winning guess!

@Fieldwalker , you're up!

Next thread is up from @Fieldwalker !

Well, let's see...

  1.  My extended family is in dispute with one of the sultans in Malaysia over land usage, which now is around close to a billion dollars worth. No idea if we'll ever see the money, but it's fun to think about how to divide nearly 1 billion dollar to 4000+ people.
·

My guess would be for 1 being the lie. Though they are all pretty plausible.

·

Number 3, just because that's the one I want to be true 🙏
