Would you buy a $90 GMT?

I ran across this Pagani Design GMT watch for less than $90. It has a Pearl DG5388-A movement, which I don't know much about at all. If it is any good, that is an incredible bargain for a GMT watch. What do you all think? Would you take a chance on it?

If possible, I'd probably try to save up a few hundred more and get a Steinhart or a good microbrand with a Sellita movement. Almost every Pagani I've had has had something dodgy about it that didn't inspire confidence.

Most GMT's remind me of this:

They are for others, but not for me.

Yeah, I am not really thinking I could trust this movement. There is a San Martin GMT with the new NH34 movement for $329, that is an Explorer homage. That one will at least hopefully have a reliable movement.

·

My PD GMT-Master II clomage sports that same Pearl movement and has been running for close to two years without a problem. That's just anecdotal evidence, but that's all I can say about it.

·

In my experience, any PD watch with either the NH35 or a Miyota movement is worth the risk. Everything I have seen on forums regarding the Pearl movement has been about problems with the movement.

·

I'd go San Martin for a budget GMT

·

More likely to drop 90 bucks than I am to pay 10+ grand, that's for sure.

I own 2 PD's and am happy with both .

I have to agree. From what I have been able to find out, they come out of the Mingzhou factory. I have read a few negative experiences with movements from Mingzhou on various forums.

Had the Polar dial Explorer II version for a while, it was pretty good! Solid finishing, a bit of AR, nice crystal. Downsides: poorly applied lume, meh bracelet, and the movement could be a little dodgy at times. The GMT hand would tend to “skip” when the crown was pushed back in, and the rotor was a bit wobbly. Perhaps I got a dud 🤷. For about $120, I thought it was decent value for money at the time, but that was prior to the NH34 being released, so probably a bit different landscape now.

Yeah, some of the Chinese movements can be hit or miss. I remember when Starking released some watches with the new hi beat 28,800 bph movement for under $100. I bought two. One works fine, one has a horrible stutter.

·

It does seem to be more of a quality control issue than anything else with these Pearl GMT movements. Real hit or miss whether you get a good one.

·

I’d get that exact model, but wait for the NH34 to make it into it. Oh. And wait for me to have some kind of reason for needing a GMT. Fortnite Cups and MMOs don’t really justify it.

·

I bought one and wish I hadn’t. They look okay for an homage. The caliber is trash, hard to set and the hands ALWAYS move when you push in the crown after you finally think you’ve got it set. Get a Seiko or at least one of the micros that use the Seiko NH34. Don’t waste you money.

Good to hear you have had a good experience with this movement.

Sorry to hear that. We now have one good and one bad experience in this thread. Anecdotally, we have 50% positive experiences with this movement. 😆

Since you already have a GMT, would you have use for another one in terms of use? Would it replace your citizen? They arent known for their durability but at that price I would not expect too much either. It does look like a decent value but it comes back down to your reasons for getting it.

·

I've had good experiences with 3 Chinese brands including PD. I was in the market for a GMT and was faced with the dillema of go cheap or pay a bit more. I have to be honest I didn't really "need" a GMT but I did want one!

Now there's usually a compromise with the Chinese brands and assuming you go for a well known movement, this normally is in regard to the final finish of the bracelet. So what did I choose? I decided to scratch two itches and bought an orange Seiko SSK005K1 for £269 on offer. So glad I did!

·

No. Save your pennies and buy a second hand Nomos Club Campus

·

Big no

·

For $90 you can't go far wrong, just don't expect too much

·

I bought a Pagani Explorer 1 and gave it away. I really think for this type of watch, the Steinhart option is much better. https://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/ocean-vintage-gmt-neu.html

·

From Casio, yes. From Pagani Design, not even if you gave it to me.

·

Sure. The worst that can happen is that I'll end up with a clunker and be out of 90$.

I wish all the hard earned lessons I was taught in life were only 90$

Well said! Absolutely true! Most of my life lessons were far more expensive than $90.

Apparently there’s a sort of knack to setting the hands… turn the crown the tiniest bit back I think. Saw it on YouTube.

I am not really wanting to get one, I was just curious what the opinions of the community are. 😁

·

I'm not a fan of these tribute watches, I tried and got rid of them quickly. I prefer to save up and buy the originals. But, it's not the same price.😅 I plan to buy (one of these days) a watch equipped with a Miyota 9075 (real GMT!) at a nice price. I'm waiting for the model that will hit the mark. 🙂https://calibercorner.com/miyota-caliber-9075/

·

I was at one time going to get one of these but backed off because I wasn’t familiar with the movement.

Good call from all I have heard. Would you buy a $96 GMT watch with an NH34 movement? Tandorio has one.

Probably not regardless of cost I've seen a review on that watch and although it looked good on paper not worth the risk.
