Travel and Watches - How do you pick?

Those of us who use this forum or other forums have probably all seen a post or two about travel watches. However, the meaning of watches in travel can be very subjective and the reasons for choosing which watch(es) to take on the journey vary a lot. Some like taking a cheap watch to avoid getting robbed or damaging something expensive while active, others choose a watch from the country they are visiting and I have even seen people bringing entire collections along with them. When it comes to me, I am somewhere between just bringing whatever and taking a watch from where I'm going if I happen to have one. For instance, I visited Germany last week and obviously wore my Nomos. How do you pick your travel watch? Is it one of these reasons or perhaps something entirely different?

I we are my Farer worldtime. Not expensive. Good looks, good functionality and good water resistance. Perfect for eveywhere.

·

The only place I Tavel is to work I’ve spent all my money on watches haha

·

Depends on where you visit. I got my GShock stolen in Barcelona. Yeah. A GShock…..

If I visit, Japan, Korea, or Taiwan. I will make sure I wear the biggest and baddest Rolex.

If I visit Paris, Milan, Barcelona. I will wear something that says “Made in China”

C. Nobody is left behind.

The only reason I would be travelling is so my GMT can finally be used for something. ☺️

·

This one is a little nuanced for me. I always travel with my Ball Hydrocarbon GMT. The GMT is set to UTC so no matter where I am I have a consistent time. I feel comfortable with that one since it’s low key. Then since I’m usually in business attire I take a casual/sports watch and a dress watch. So no matter where I go three watches are with me. The only thing that changes is the level of time piece I bring. I usually bring my top pieces to cruises since my brother and I have fun wearing them. I bring under the radar pieces everywhere else, unless I know the location and surround area is safe enough to do so. I’m not worried about me, it’s more a concern for my wife or who ever else is with me.

Wear one, take none. Cheap and basic.

·

Although i ll maybe face problems with customs when i m travelling back...well, no one s left behind

That is pretty wild, but I guess G-Shocks are recognizable at least.

Good points with it depending on the location as well. Some places are definitely safer than others.

I Am traveling tomorrow, Grand seiko on my wrist, Seiko marinemaster for the beach and snorkeling, watch roll and a choice of straps 😎

I always take my favourites, I am not scared of wearing anything if I can't enjoy it then what's the point?

All depends on the trip and destination.

NB I don't wear divers much and don't have any "big brand" watches which are likely to be recognised. My tastes mostly run smaller, yellow gold and vintage.

Business travel in the developed world I wear whatever I feel like. Risk is low as I'm just going to be in airports, planes, hotels, taxis, offices and restaurants. I only ever take one watch which stays on my wrist. Usually one of the 34-36mm vintage gold dress watches I love - discreet, classic, not special enough that I'd be heartbroken to lose it. Or my "vintage beater" integrated bracelet 70s Omega Genève.

Vacation: it'll depend on activities and climate.

European city break - pretty much anything. This is probably because I already live in a European city, which if you believed US media is a hotbed of crime, filled with no go areas etc. That said, I usually avoid anything "expensive" or sentimentally valuable. Not from fear of crime but because I might accidentally leave it behind in a hotel. Never happened yet, but you never know, especially distracted when travelling with kids.

Camping/trekking: G-shock or Pro-Trek.

Beach: something modern with decent seals like a dressy Tissot - PRX or 36mm Seastar.

honestly just something really versatile because I usually just bring one watch with me. Honestly I dont care about the price of the watch when travelling

·

I've been taking my pepsi seiko kinetic diver for years now, it covers all bases

Left the watch inside a backpack. Left the backpack in my rental car.

Went to a museum.

Came back. The car is smashed. The backpack is still there! He was nice enough to leave the bag behind.

The GShock was gone. My kid’s iPads are gone. My wife’s Hermes bag is gone.

Ah man. Sorry to hear about that. Property theft is such a hassle. You feel like you have to secure everything all the time while you're traveling.

I sometimes travel with a couple but if I were going to take 1 it would be my Traska Venturer GMT. Great looks, scratch resistant treatment, enough water resistance to scuba dive, gmt functionality, and relatively inexpensive.

·

My travels usually involve physical activity (SUPing, snorkelling, swimming, mountain biking, hiking, running, etc.), so I always wear my Rangeman (G-Shock) when travelling (multiple easily accessible time zones, solar, accurate, etc.). Just returned from Morocco, where it stood up to 40+ C temps, sand storms and camel riding in the Sahara (I think the watch took it better than I did). It’s also not attention grabbing in the medina in Marrakech, which is never a bad thing. Also often take along either a Citizen diver or Promaster Tough.

Duro and chill

·

I think it somewhat depends where you are going.

·

B.... I only travel to Switzerland (occasionally Japan, France and Germany) 😉

·

My Omega Railmaster is my preferred travel watch, regardless of destination.

·

It depends on where I go, but generally, I default to GMT watches if I am going sufficiently far away.

That said, I am going to Barcelona in December, and I don't feel that inclined to wear anything too valuable, and that's why I decided to order a Borealis Estoril 300.

·

I’m traveling right now and I picked one watch to wear everyday. It’s one with a screw down crown so it’s ready for any adventure.

·

Great question. I was planning a trip to Qatar in a few weeks, but world events changed that. Now off to Singapore. A friend told me I may have to pay taxes on any expensive items I bring, even if they are returning with me. Probably a nicer G Shock as I am still mourning the loss of the Oris I lost first time I wore it. Should of checked pins on the new band better

·

I go with my omega AT with the 8900 movement. Not a gmt but I like the hour quick set function. It’s not a cheap watch but under radar and if it ever gets stolen on travel, we’ll there what insurance is for.

And if I don’t feel like having it stolen then that is what Krav Maga is for…..

Ball Watch Co. 💪

Depends on where I'm going. If it's a low crime country like Japan or Singapore, then I'd take my nice watch along. But if it's a country known for tourists getting mugged, then a cheap watch.

Singaporean here. Personal use items are not taxed. But if it looks like you brought in a bunch of watches to sell, then that's another story.

·

I'd take a GMT if I'm travelling by air, just to get some use out of it. My citizen Promaster also has a handy instant hour change function that I have exploited by setting the watch to UTC and then setting the hour adjustment to my local time zone. And finally, a casio royale for alarms and timer functions.
