I finally bought one of these

So a week or two ago, I finally got the email for a Helm Miyako and ended up ordering one. While waiting for that, I figured I might as well pick up another watch that I have been eyeing up.

I was originally looking at "the Accurate" as I was interested in that a decent bit of time ago, but the more recently released "Berry Late Again!" ended up standing out to me far more, so I bought one of these.

Physical qualities

The specs, finishing etc, aren't anything amazing for the money. It uses some unspecified swiss quartz movement and the finishing is entirely glossy, and not the good quality gloss like my Nomos. At least it has sapphire, so it beats Seiko in that department.

The only real issue is the press on caseback.

Design

The case is very generic and used in most of their watches. Works well enough. Lugs could be shorter and there is what people call a "false crown" on the left side, although it does not look like a crown at all.

The star of the show here is the dial. Akin to many of their watches, they use a clever mechanism where the hands are replaced by transparent plates that have the moving elements of the art in them.

Indeed, Mr Jones watches are art in the form of watches, which means that they differ greatly from what most brands offer.

In this case, there are strawberries pointing at the hours and minutes with a majority of the dial being taken up by a scramble of letters that align to spell out a text when the hours and minutes are pointing in the opposite directions from each other.

The end result is a highly dynamic dial that doesn't have the sense of emptiness that some of their dials, such as the (for some reason that I do not understand) popular "A perfectly useless afternoon" do.

Everything on the dial is changing and thanks to the use of multiple different colours for the letters, this is very noticeable.

As a brand

I paid 245€ for my watch, including taxes and all that. Some people are critical of this brand and while it's definitely not for everyone, it's incredible for what it is. While the physical build is not on par with normal watches of the price point, it's still okay.

And that is obviously not what makes the cost of such a watch. They have some of the most insane watch dials in the market, designed by artists and made in London. The fact that such interesting and unique designs are available from a brand that doesn't charge 100k for their watches is wild. Also a lot of it is just clever, but simple, engineering, which I appreciate.

Love Mr Jones watches. At that price point it’s a great fun addition to any collection.

Thank you for your explanations! Pretty interesting approach indeed.. Congrats

Congrats! Nice one. And fully agree with you: the case is nothing special (shiny and rather flimsy) but the dials are great! I have the Beam Me Up, where once every hour the UFO’s tractor beam catches the blue pig - which then turns pink :-) Strap is fine btw.

And I don’t know whether the pricier mechanical versions they now offer of some of their watches provide a better quality case…

At least the mechanical versions of the quartz watches seem to have screw down casebacks.

They also have some specific models with different brushed cases, but it's only very few models. No clue how good these are.
