Watchwinders... what's the point?

What's everyone's view on Watchwinders?

Useful?

Pointless?

Easy to use?

Don't know what I'm talking about?

All thoughts here please!

Useful for perpetual calendars and maybe calendar watches lacking a quick set funtion. Generally frivolous frippery in other cases but watch collectors have a penchant for unnecessary purchases.

·

It’s just more toys to play with to be honest I don’t own one as I don’t mind and quite like spending the minute to wind up and set the time and date

·

Over the years, I have heard a number of different arguments pro and con regarding use of watchwinders. Firstly I have never owned one, perhaps for reasons connected to the fact that I have also never bothered to display my watches in presentation cases. Somehow watchwinders mostly recall memories of watchmakers who need to employ the wall mounted contraptions to test the quality of their completed work with automatic movements. If the enthusiast is lucky enough to count several perpetual calendar watches in his or her rotation of daily beaters, a watchwinder might be a necessity. I believe a relatively new opinion falls mostly on the con side that winders exert unnecessary wear on movements that are worn rarely, a monthly or weekly habit of 30-40 turns of the crown should be adequate to keep lubricants from drying.

Pointless

·

Just another useless accessory for manufacturers to charge $700 for a plastic box with a motor, to go along their $300 premium quality watch roll (actually $12 worth of "genuine" leather made in China).

It causes more wear on the movement for no good reason. Just wear or wind your watches at least once a month to keep the oils from drying is what I've been taught.

·

Useful only for watches with complications that are difficult to set (e.g. perpetual calendar), or if you want to display your watches.

·

It has uses to some people. I personally enjoy interacting with my watch, having to wind, or set a complication after it’s been sitting for a few days.

·

Absolutely essential.

I wind my G Shocks up before going out.

Keeps the ones and zeros running smoothly.

And it confuses the watch demons so I'm safe from possession.

Well, at least for the day.

Convenience item

·

I got one free with my Longines Spirit. I don't use it very often, occasionally if I have a 38 hour auto running and intend to wear it again after the weekend.

·

my experience is that throughout the elctric magnetism it creates by being powered, the watch was in the end way beyond it´s speccs and needed a treatment to get rid of magnetism.

Haven´t plugged that thing in since then. If you have a watch featuring a silicium spiral/helix, fine - go for it if it makes you happy seeing it turning every once in a while 🙂

·

I only own 3 automatics but I'm very happy to own a 2-watch winder. It's super convenient and always a pleasure to know my watches are set and running when I need them.

·

I use a Wolf winder for 2 of my 30 watches. It's only for the 2 watched I hate setting because they take a while to set.

·

Too, I've found that the positional errors exhibited by most movements increase when the state of wind is low. Not a problem for people with one or two watches, or those who don't worry about the seconds.

·

I find it useful as I have 20 and it saves me from setting each one when I want to wear them. Also very handy for perpetual calendar.

That's a proper bodge and I love it!

·

Pointless, just another thing to waste one’s money on.

·

I have one, and I like it. Mine is a Wolf programmable, single unit. A watch winder is a pure luxury, and not a necessity. But it is a nice thing to have if you want to keep a few watches under power (rotating watches will allow even a single watch unit to keep several watches going). I picked mine up on a great deal, and wouldn’t have otherwise. But I’m glad I did, and truly enjoy it.

·

I personally really like my watch winder. But as others have mentioned not needed. I like the display aspect of it and it allows me to be crazy and swap watches out in the middle of the day to a different watch if I want with no winding or setting ha. Might as well show them all off to yourself.

How many different black watch straps does one need......

OOOOO shiny new new black on black single pass with subtly different hardware and weave.... 🫣

·

I made one for myself out of Lego, it is for my kinetic watch since normal winder doesn't work for kinetic, and it also work with normal automatic watch but i only use for my seiko with 7s26 mvt since it doesnt support manual wind

·

I don’t use them, I enjoy winding a watch before I wear it (something therapeutic). I also don’t like the idea of extra wear on the movement.

·

There is almost no reason for them.

Do you leave your car idling, when you don't drive it? No? Exactly.

The only reason for one, would be a Perpetual Calender Watch. You would not want to set it again, after a few days of not wearing it. And if you own such a watch, you don't care about increased service cost anyway.

I dont really find them necessary. I have solars or quartz if i want to just grab and go. The mechanicals, just rotate a few times a month to keep them in running order, and set the time and date as needed. Its part of the ritual, why else would you wear mechanicals..

I would, if it didnt allow moisture to enter through the crown.

·

It’s generally just a luxury item but i have used one from time to time when i rotated between 2 watches and 1 of them was a perpetual/annual calendar. It makes it super convenient when you change watches and the calendar is correct.

Useful

Unless you have lots of complications in your watches then I say bollucks to winders.

·

Pointless and a waste ..
