First post

Hello all, this is my first post on this site! I'm chickenwrist, nice to meet you!

I'm a young man starting my collecting journey, heres my new love. The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date 80th Anniversary edition. Quite the mouthful. Still better than those Seiko model numbers though.

I come from a well to do family, but one which is rather frugal. The only luxury goods are often received as gifts, we don't... Give ourselves gifts much. I took a long time to come to the decision to purchase this, and I finally got it before my wedding recently.

I love the warmth of the bronze and the green dial. The nostalgic vintage charm of the coin bezel and cathedral hands. Moreover, I appreciate that it is an independent brand in Switzerland. I do quite enjoy the pointer date complication, the red pointer adds a dash of colour. (Yes I love fun colours like Farers).

My collection does not have many watches, around 7 to 8. The most treasured of which are from my grandfather and father, this is my first watch I've spent more than 1000 of my own money. Actually the first I've spent more than 500 of my own money. It's a good feeling, rewarding yourself with the fruits of your labour. An aspect that is sure to guide my future collecting philosophy. @AndrewMorgan I saw your recent view on the philosophy behind collecting, I agree, the context and decision is much more important. This watch to me represents my milestone to becoming independent, and also the birthing my new responsibilities beyond myself, i.e. my marriage :).

With the newfound ability to support myself financially comes the responsibility of supporting my new family too. I wore this watch to my wedding and said my vows with it, and for that alone it is enough to make me treasure it dearly. I hope I'll remember this moment fondly, of me taking a step beyond myself. An oxymoron perhaps, just when I'm financially independent, I tether my whole life to someone I love, and hence willing giving up my new independence for the rewards of something greater.
