I finally got a MoonSwatch. If Swatch x Omega weren’t embarrassed before, they really should be now

NEW VIDEO : https://youtu.be/eAuxe6d0_4M

There’s been a lot of talk about the MoonSwatch ever since its release a year ago. It’s polarised opinion with some saying it’s a fun cool playful watch, whilst others bemoan the poor build quality, the colour bleeding off the cases and onto wrists and the dreadful straps.

Nevertheless, by some estimates more than a million of them have been sold in the last 12 months.

I confess, I got caught up in all the hype and recently bought one.

Having since got hands on with the MoonSwatch, I’m surprised that no one appears to have pulled either watch brand up on the issue I stumbled into, which is hiding in plain sight.

This is Swatch and Omega we are talking about. Honestly, both brands ought to be embarrassed and feel abashed.

Initially, I wondered whether it was tantamount to fraud.

It was all rather upsetting and a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.

Let me explain…

This just highlights all of my concerns about this watch.

·

Swarch own Omega right?

Swatch watch imo have always been expensive for their build quality. The moon watches are no exceptions.

Swatch watches are designed to be fun collectables watches. The people that buy moon watches are swatch collectors. The marketing was aim at collectors. It the same marketing swatch used on all their watches.

These watches aren't designed for people that buy $20,000 watches. So don't buy swatch brand if you don't like cheap plastic watches.

It's not a 10 hour display. It's a 1/10th seconds display. This is a common quartz movement that only counts to 60 minutes with a minute subdial at 10 0'clock ,a 1/10the second subdial at 2 o'clock, a running seconds subdial at 6 o'clock and a central chrono seconds hand.

Did I miss something? I didn't watch the whole video.

It runs as designed. Only problem is Swatch CS lack of product knowledge.

💯🎯 You’re absolutely right. Of course, I didn’t know that initially (shows how much I know) and the key point is: that’s not what the MoonSwatch website says either. The subdial on the watch is misdescribed on their website and weeks after me pointing this out, they still haven’t changed the copy… It also means that the marketing team that put it all together didn’t know what they were talking about either AND no one from Swatch or Omega has bothered to read the copy… 🤯

·

Marketing teams hate facts.

They get in the way of making $$$$.😉

·

Is hard for Omega and Swatch to be ashamed when consumer are lining up or over paying online for one. This is just the beginning when the sales will die down they will release it to be sold online and another wave of buyers will pop. After the retail and online sales are dying they will release a plastic Sea Master 007 for 500/600 USD boutiques only. Great video hopefully they change their website about the chronograph.

·

I agree … 😜

Hmm. I knew how the Chronograph works but I can perhaps see how it might be confusing. I had never heard about their incorrect specification on the website. So I stopped the video at 8:30 and had a look online as if I had never seen a watch in my life. This is what I found

My wife picked this up in Osaka last week. They had the yellow and red models in stock as well.

  • I can’t help thinking of the old saying “ A fool and his money are soon parted “ my god that definitely applies to watches at all ends of the market really. I will never waste my money on a swoonmatch , give me a good old Casio…. Or a good Swatch !

·

Not very cheap and very nasty yet people still buy them. On that basis a sales success. Each to their own!

·

What I've always found is that Omega has been completely milking the speedmaster for years and years.

How many different variations of the speedmaster exist in the meantime? Is there anyone left on the plannet who can keep track? You find more than grains of sand on the beach....and this moonswatch is just the ridiculous epitome of emptying.

I already find the speedmaster itself to be a totally overhyped watch, you pay excessive for what you get, thousands of dollars for hand winding, virtually no water resistance, no hacking and no saphire crystal, if that occurs on a $500 Seiko it is considered intolerable.

Having said this, in my opinion it is mainly Omega that should be ashamed of themselves for handling their flagship like this, and not so much Swatch, of which we have always known it is plastic junk.

·

Saw a video yesterday. I hadn’t really looked at the strap much.

Dear Moonswatch owners, the strap has been put on upside down. You should remedy that.

·

My attitude toward the Moonswatch is mostly negative because it (a) doesn't really look like a Speedmaster once you notice the location of the sub-registers and (b) it's a 50US$ watch with a +200US$ markup that force you to queue like a mendicant begging for alms.

·

I don’t hate many things in this world, but I hate this watch

·

As for all watches, also for this watch counts: if you like it then buy one and enjoy. The thing is: I think this is mostly bought because people want to belong to the "select" group of moon swatch owners (good marketing) or to resell it more expensive. For me this has little to do with the reason why we are in the hobby.

Titanium, has a date display, tachy bezel is a bit useless as it’s the 6pm subdial that is the chrono.

Also significantly cheaper than a moon swatch, and apparently about as functional, as it too has a tenths of a second display. (And 24 hour subdial, which is useful if you haven’t looked out a window in a while.)

Honestly, I can see why people would buy a Mechaquartz Seiko movement homage over the real deal in this case.

(This accurist isn’t Mechaquartz, my Mechaquartz is in a skin diver )

Or get an eco drive with a chrono — at least you don’t have to worry about batteries, and they do tenths of a second too.

I am so glad these things launched at too hard to get, and too expensive, for my reach. I wanted to get three of the things, and think I dodged a bullet.

·

Whatever your feelings are on the matter the fact remains that this has been a successful marketing move worthy of text books and has gotten people who could have cared less about watches generally lining up for one . . . which is certainly something. Is this collab a bit lopsided and benefiting Swatch more? Yeah, probably. But sales also have been surging for Omega as well, and I'm not surprised there either (and imagine some younger folks who didn't' consider getting into watches might actually be thinking about it now). Honestly, I'm shocked this kind of collab hasn't happened sooner given the relationship of the companies. My broken MoonSwatch is on a stand now. It's basically just a decoration. But I don't regret buying it (at retail).

·

I just went for the DBZ watches instead , fk the moon swatch tbh.

·

Yeah, making products that are in high demand with a large profit margin. What kind of way is that to run a business? How dare they.

·

Pagani sells a chrono with the same hands in metal with a VK63 movement for a lot less money. They use Seiko to outdo both Swatch and Omega

I love mine a ton, I haven't had an issue yet! Well I did have to throw it on this strap tho..

·

It's a 1/10th of a second sundial. This video was waaaaaay too long to get to that point.

Certainly not for $250!

·

Initially I was interested in the MoonSwatch. But availability issues and the pulling away from offering online ended my interest. Also, I’ve come to feel that it is overpriced for what the actual product is as it has been seen post release.

·

I enjoy your videos. Very calming and relaxing to listen on a Sunday afternoon.

This is an excellent point. Personally I don't begrudge the watch maker, well, making watches that people want to buy and making a profit doing so. I'm more puzzled by people who purport to be watch collectors and educated about the watch market succumbing to this marketing hype. It's a poorly built plastic watch that costs way more than what you could get comparatively from other name brand watch makers (not even talking about AliExpress here). $152. You can even collect... different.... colours.... It doesn't say Omega on the dial though, but if we're honest with ourselves, the MoonSwatch is not an "Omega" either. I guess the people who should really be offended are the ones at Omega (I know, they are all employees of the Swatch Group, but you know what I mean) who make a high quality, precision and premium time piece only to have their reputation branded onto a cheap plastic, I mean, bio-ceramic™ watch. It would be like VW putting a Lamborghini logo on their Golf.

Anyway, buy what makes you happy. But make that your reason for buying it. You like your MoonSwatch? Lovely. But don't ever make an argument that it's an Omega, a good watch or a good value. It's junk. Junk can be fun. I like me an all beef hot dog once in a while too. It's not good food. I know that. But I'd never make the argument that it's a poor man's filet mignon just because it has the words "all beef" on the package. Just like the MoonSwatch isn't a poor man's Omega because it says Omega on the package.
