Grail or Exit Watch

Hey Folks,

Don't roll your eyes, I know this topic has probably been done a million times, but I can't sleep and it's 4:38am in Staten Island, New York so please bear with me.

I am 59 and newly retired and I have more watches than life left, so I am no longer buying but still loving the hobby and enjoying my little piece of heaven (a small Timex Museum I designed in my house).

Having said that, there is an exit watch (my grail) that I need to get out of my system. Most will laugh because in the watch world this price range is considered entry level, but being that I collect Timex watches, this is their highest priced watch to date and I don't equate grail watch with a particular price because it's all relative, but I get that some do.

So here goes, my Grail (exit watch) is the Giorgio Galli S2 Automatic 38mm. I just can't get this one off my mind, after this I'm done! I think. lol

Would love to hear if anyone else has an Exit or Grail watch.

Excellent choice, my friend. You may want to add the Marlin Chronograph too ;)

I don’t think anyone will laugh at you. Your “grail watch” is yours alone, and that’s what matters. Bottom line: I don’t know if I have a grail and/or exit watch, but it’s probably something different every couple of weeks to a month.

Do what makes you happy. That’s my advice.

I don't think there's such a thing as an exit watch, but there's an exit state of mind. Once you've reached your zen, you pick up one last item and try to make it a great last purchase.

Whether you stop or come back is entirely in your head, not in your purchase(s).

·

Oh, like YOU have a choice 🤪. Get it when you can and enjoy it!

As for “exit watch,” I’d invite you to talk to my father-in-law, who is 88 and about to lease his fourth “last car” (this in a country where they periodically reassess older drivers and he passes with flying colors every time).

·

The whole purpose of exit watch is it will suffice for any needs, hence taking majority ( if not all ) wrist time and reduce the need for any other watch. Since you said you have so many watches you could get rid of some to finance this. But at the end I assume 1k$ price is not something that will take a huge hit on your financial situation so save a bit and go get it. And if that is the case then maybe consider not owning more than 100 watches, food, bills and wellbeing is more important than any watch😀

·

I was very careful about choosing an exit watch and made sure it is unattainable. 😉 I can thefore continue collecting in confidence.

Happy retirement! There are certainly worse choices for an overpriced Swiss watch. 😁 Seriously, the Galli S2 is gorgeous. It puts any gimmicky AP to shame. And methinks it would be a good affordable alternative to the Code 11:59.

·

Personally, I don't have an exit watch yet. I was an OWG for most of my life, so I hope that my next big purchase will be "the nice watch I wear most of the time" and if I manage to keep it running as long as myself, it will earn the "life watch" title.

·

Yes save up and buy that Galli. Congrats on retirement!

I turned 72 last July, pushed into semi retirement by a freak broken ankle followed by a global pandemic. An old friend once suggested that age was not relevant, it was the mileage or wear and tear, that worries me greatly since I cannot list all the injuries and broken bones suffered already, plus I live in a building that was erected in the late 1800s, lots of stairs, high maintenance but I have a garage full of tools since I no longer own a car, preferring to walk to destinations not too distant. I have been messing with mechanical watches my entire life, have not been able to identify an exit or last, have stop trying. Good luck with your retirement years. 👍

·

Do it, you’ve earned it.

·

Got mine a few years ago, love it more everyday. Go for it, you won't regret it. 👍🏻

·

Congrats on reaching that milestone! If the watch doesn't affect your retirement budget or standard of living, treat yourself. For me, I have a max limit instead of an exit or grail watch. Box only fits 10, so I limit myself to 10 pieces. I'm one-in, one-out. If there's a piece I really want, then one has to go.

·

Stephen.. you're too young to have an exit watch. I'm sure there are few timexes.. erm, I mean.. years left in you yet 🤓

·

O wow, this watch's black and sleekness gives it a modern Movado Museum Watch feel with probably a bit more function and flexibility to be worn in more situations. Upgrade on the movement to Selitta, Timex is doing things for sure.

Happy Retirement!

·

Looks nice. Whatever floats your boat!

·

So, buy it allready!! We really hate to see you lose sleep... Enjoy the hobby!!

·

Holy moly that's stunning! Damn you, now I have to find more money / sell something!! 😜

Honestly though, be happy your grail watch is relatively obtainable, there's zero shame in that!

Good news is that it's still a timex and will be subject to discounts and sales often!

Yes, they are known for that, but truthfully I haven't seen that with the S1 yet and it's been out for a while. Time will tell.

Yes, oddly enough I was never a fan of the minimalist look of the Movado, but this one I really love.

·

YOLO. Buy it. Right now. 🙌

·

You know; I like it! Good for you! You’ve always had that wonderful Timex and this will fit perfectly

·

Cool. Definitely will. Most likely I'll wait until sometime next year.

·

Damn it, make them hold their wrists still. I can't see what they're wearing.
