Thoughts on message from Rolex AD

Hey Alex,

I'm doing well, sorry for the late response.

The Rolex GMT Master 2 is a very challenging watch for us to source. We try to help all our clients in acquiring this watch. The best way to get a greater chance in receiving this watch (as long as Rolex still produces said watch) is to be a consistent and loyal client here at (took out AD name)

If we are top of mind for your watch and jewelry needs, you will remain top of time for hard to get watches like the Rolex GMT.

You are correct in that we don't do a waiting list. We do note interest for certain pieces.

That’s pretty cool you got a letter and there’s no wait list. But how do you become a constant and loyal client if they don’t have any watches? 🫣

You buy higher profit jewelry. Of course, as @SpecKTator alludes, it never matters until your spending is worth more to them then the watch is to you (which only happens to moneybags types whose eyes wander to even pricier watches while waiting). They know that most people can be roped along ad infinitum.

Screw these guys. Gray marketers may screw you a bit, but they only do it once and they deliver what they promise.

Please reply to the email with goatse images and ask them exactly how stupid they think you are.

Show up to their boutique regularly, kick the tires on their other watches and drink all of their alcohol. You’ll definitely be top of mind! But seriously, find another AD.

·

The decoder ring is that you must first buy a couple of Tudors. Then perhaps they can locate a Rolex for you but not the one you prefer but you'll need to buy that. Maybe at that point you will have enough "relationship" with them to earn the Rolex you actually want.

·

All those words to say "Buy other merch first, then we'll think about it." SMH

·

If you want one watch, go to a grey market dealer and call it a day.

·

Artificial exclusivity at it’s finest

I would try to talk about things about the watch that no one else really talks about but you have to be smooth about it. Something along the lines of "Wow I really like the nickel-phosphorus Chronergy escapement in the caliber 3285". Sometimes you really gotta prove you're a cut above the rest if you really want it. That's how my friend got a Silver Snoopy with no purchase history and then eventually the 321 Ed White.

·

Typical Rolex AD BS. Not all of them are like that. Unfortunately, I couldn't accept the one I got when the call came in, but I did get the call with no purchase history and only one visit to this AD in three months. Now, mind you, it wasn't for a hard-to-get piece, but I was still impressed I got a call for anything.

·

They are selling you on selling you, and they're not even bothering to actually commit anything on their end. Not a good deal.

·

My local jeweler/watchmaker just got in a GMT today. Very clean 2018 GMT Master II with the Pepsi dial, box and papers included. They’re asking $19k

·

I bought a Rolex OP 41 green , Rolex date just 41, and Rolex explorer II without a purchase history. This is how I got my first Rolex with no purchase history

·

At least they were honest with you. This is how you get hard to get models; buy other brands, used watches, or jewelry. Folks don’t like it, but they get limited numbers of watches and they make sure the best customers get the best watches.

·

The waitlist sucks but so does not winning the lottery . I tend to think about Rolex as a lottery for those that are willing to pay to play , no thanks … it’s just a watch that is overpriced but excellently marketed . Good watch but definitely overpriced.

I would forward this mail to Rolex directly.

Maybe (but unlikely) you get a statement about how Rolex feels about this common practice.

Maybe (more likely) they will contact the sales person that he shouldn’t sent out mails with such bluntly blackmailing wording.

That won’t change the game, but maybe a few less customers will get milked that way.

I'm not sure if Rolex would even care 🤷🏽‍♂️

This is the steel GMT Master ii? Is it pepsi or batman that you asked for?

Last month my AD asked me to buy a full gold Rootbeer GMT. And I flatly refused.

Steel pepsi. The Rolex rootbeer is pretty awesome but can't afford it. What were you wanting or waiting for instead?

I didn’t have anything on the waiting list this year. I just got the call asking me if I wanna buy the watch. But its too expensive at 46k CAD

I live in Toronto

Congrats! What watch did you get?

It was an Explorer, but because of financial changes I didn't get it, turned it down.

I couldn't find an email address so I just left a direct message on insta. Most likely I won't hear back but at least I sent the message. Have a great weekend 🍻

100% agree with what you said. Lots of other great watch brands out there. Just shady business strat.

Its their prerogative who they want to sell to but there will be a day when the opposite will be true and the people who were turned away/down will probably not be there to support them

That's sucks! but never put yourself in debt for a watch. Respect! 🍻

·

madness, absolute madness... that's what this AD thing is.

·

YVR ADs are the same deal. Not worth perusing IMO. I mostly buy used and have no interest in Rolex anymore: happy times again!

Thanks for sharing this. I know people have been told this verbally, and reported it on the forums, that you need to buy Jewellery at lower cost but higher dealer margin to get yourself on the bottom rung. However this is the first time I heard someone got the message in writing. Of course it is veiled and would be deniable legally, but the intention is clearly there.

We just need to wait for investments in general to pick up, so that it is better for the non-watch lovers to put their bitcoin into lithium mining stocks for example, and we will be back to the era where you can walk into a bricks and mortar AD and buy a Rolex on the day.

Np i had to share this with people but it's not really a surprise anymore since lots of people have been told this. I had a sneaky feeling my SA was kind of sleezy now this message confirms it. I won't be going back. I would have preferred if he just said only for vip customers lol

What is the difference between a list and noting interest? Do they simply "remember" all those notes? Or are such notes written down in a (wait for it . . .) list?

Yeah it's a lie. I do have 1 AD that is legit and actually makes a file in a computer and puts your interests in there 🍻

·

I hate Rolex ADs.
