Gold watches: Do I like them more because I'm older?

OK, so I still don't get too excited about true gold watches (current exception is the Vacheron Constantin 222), but the stainless steel / gold combos are growing on me. Especially the beauty that is the Rolex GMT Master II 126713GRNR which I was able to try on today. I think the black and grey bezel is the tipping point for me. But I also think I am starting to feel my age.

Do you think gold aesthetically becomes (even) more appealing as we get older?

I personally don’t get this watch. Seems like I’m the only person in the world who is not a fan of this watch. 🤷🏻‍♂️

·

When it comes to men’s watches, I don’t think I’ll ever like anything gold…but that’s just me🤙

Gold is where it is at.

·

I kind of agree, as I get older gold or two-tone is a bit more appealing. But that watch should only be steel - gold does not suit it at all, why put gold on a basic tool watch?

I like it personally, but you’re definitely not the only person I’ve seen who doesn’t care for this model

Will let you know in a few more years when I get old 😉. However, I have started liking those two-tone gold watches. Does that mean I am getting older?

I don’t think you can count any modern Rolex as a basic tool watch anymore. Maybe tool watch inspired 😂

It took till I was in my late 40's to be bold and deserving enough to appreciate gold. Not rose gold, as I am not a deviant, but yellow gold.

·

I’m in my mid 30s and if money was no option most of my watches would be solid or two tone gold

·

I tried it on for the first time Friday and I didn't think I was going to be into it....

Until I had it on my wrist....

This watch is probably the most badass watch I have ever had on my wrist.

It is absolutely stunning.

I used to think of gold as tacky but this watch is simply incredible. And I was a huge fan of the batman. When I tried it on along with the Batman forget about it. It's a whole nother level.

It feels extremely special, extremely gorgeous, extremely comfortable..

Seriously that watch blew me away.

And I am a 40 year old who wears sportsy pants and sweaters.

I love all sorts of watches, from jeager lecoultre to rolex and many many other designs/brands.

But that watch is simply killer.

And my best friend who's 35 also desperately wants it so no it's not your age: it's simply a master piece.

·

Damn these new GMT-Master II's are the best looking Gold Watch going along with the Day-Date on the Pres with roman numerals. Wish I could dip into My RDSP for one.

·

Also for anyone who has only seen pictures of it, go to an AD and see it on your wrist in person...

Photos simply do not do justice to this watch.

It's stunning.

·

I think that one is just special. I tried that same GMT on and got all excited like a kid on Christmas.

·

Love G&S watches! Extremely classy without being gaudy 👍🏾

·

GMT is an amazing watch but a 2 tone or gold version just does not appeal to me. In actual, any tool watch in gold is not my thing. After the replies above, I am surprised that many on WC share the same views.

For some, as you get older, maybe, you begin to realize you simply can afford to own a gold watch. Is it basic psychology? When younger, I'd have said 'no, I hate gold.' More than likely, I had to tell myself that.

To the watches themselves, I'm still not a fan of the bright yellow gold. My Speedmaster is a two-tone. My De Ville is gold. But both are the red gold. That, I love. They have a 'warmth' anything silver colored can't give you.

Back to your original question, I'm 66 years old and 'yes,' this old dude loves gold...when done tastefully.

I definitely think you're right about the fact that if you're young by default you have less cash and hence won't even entertain the idea of a gold watch.

The reality is a gold watch is a bit like a car with the highest priced package.

If you're younger you're probably going to appreciate all cars, but when it comes to buying one you're not going to look at full options and max engine because you are like what is the point you can't afford it / it'd be irresponsible to go for that when you can already get the car you like without the extra 50% premium.

Same with watches?

Tried both these on , really liked the 2 tone but the wife told me it doesn't suite my skin tone

I agree the 2 tone is nicer.

As far as your skin tone I feel like it also really depends on the clothes you are wearing on your arm.

I wouldn't give up just based on skin tone 😜

I don't love the dial. For a gold watch I think it lacks elegance and quality of finishing.

It doesn't look bad but if you're going to get a gold watch I feel like it would be wasted on this one.

Yeah definitely not a 222-like elegant watch. It's a speedy, but gold. I wouldn't say the original speedy is elegant either. Appreciate the input as I don't love speedy's either!

Right I don't love the look if I ignore the history of the watch.

But I could see the appeal from a historical standpoint and the design does fit with that moon/space adventure theme from the 60s.

Here's my 17-year-old two-tone Speedmaster. It was my 50th birthday gift to myself from myself. Loved it then, still love it now.

It’s okay, people’s preferences changes as years went by.

Aw man that's awesome

This has been a great discussion. Of course there are different opinions, there better be otherwise we are doing this wrong! Bottom line as always, buy and enjoy what you can, and keep an open mind to new aspects of the passion.

·

I am either ss or full gold, don't favour mixing them

·

Gold in nice when it’s applied right, if not it just looks pimped out lol

·

I’m not the biggest fan of the grey here but it works. And i think the 126713GRNR works better than the full-gold. It has more visual interest, imo. I’d like to try one on, but I’m not sure my local AD will have one. My city is a decent size but i wouldn’t call it major.

progressively , definitly !I agree and I have a theory ( it’s the same reason things such as Wool/ leather / and other rich fabric as well as long-standing brands have more appeal as we age ) . It might have to do with 1) the sense of style evolving as we get older ,more suitable to classic or dressed looking watches , and a more established appearance we chose vs being more influenced by fashion and trends earlier on . 2) Gold watches are inherently more expensive and become more accessible as disposable revenue usually increases with age and so does the watch budget by extension.

3)Then I would suggest that as the years go by , we tend to value and gravitate towards noble materials , timelessness, craftsmanship and tradition( leather , gold , platinum and craftmanship of experienced professionals ) Vs trends, individualistic characteristics and innovations( brands or design originality ).

Just a few nibbles of food for thought .

Now that I'm well into middle-age, I still don't like extra weight/"heft" in my watches, nor have I become a fan of 2-tone cases & bracelets. That said, I can appreciate the beauty of precious metal cases in small dress(ier) watches (even though I dress more casually now & have fewer occasions to wear them) & have no problem w/decorative details like gilt dials, gold dial furniture, etc. that don't affect comfort/function.
