Helping out a workmate

Recently I started talking to a coworker of mine about watches because he noticed I was wearing a different one almost every day. So after some chitchat and me explaining how I got into watches and into hobby servicing and watchmaking he started talking about how a few years ago he collected wartchez from the brand Enicar. He told me how he just got into the brand somehow and really liked their design.

When I asked him why he didn’t wear them but only his  WATCH (🤮), it was because the ones he owned were all broken or not running any more.

He said he had visited a local watchmaker to get them repaired but the guy there told him, that it was not worth repairing them as it would cost more than the watch itself was actually worth. He then said my coworker should look at the watches in his store an buy something better for the money instead. He didn’t and took his watches back home where he sadly put them in some drawer and kind of gave up.

After this sad and emotional story I asked if I should take a look at them. His face lit up and the next day he brought two watches to work and handed them to me:

The one on the left is a hand wound one that couldn’t be started no matter what, the one on the right just worked for a really short time after shaking it.

The handwinding one had to be completely serviced as it was extremely dirty.

But after cleaning and oiling it it’s now running like new again.

The automatic one had a beautiful movement, too:

It only has a loose screw that got into the movement and started back up immediately after removing it. So i just polished the crystal and cleaned the dial and case and put it back together.

I’m really happy with that outcome and am looking forward to Monday when I see him again to give the now running watches back to him. 🤩

Good job!

I would have been happy with this story ending with the coworker learning that a better watchmaker should be found, but this is much fuller and more joyous closure.

The best part of this for me is that this tale is after the purchase part and solely involves the resurrection.

So how much are you charging him?🤑

·

Awesome! This may Kickstart another watch enthusiast. Great work on those watches.

Cheers!

·

Well done. Way to step up and help someone in need. How disappointing that the repair person didn't try to connect to the owner's love for the watch to try and help out...

·

Bless you for helping him out! I wish that I could bring the same skills to the table when discussing watches with a co-worker who I found had a few nice watches that he inherited from his dad and grandfather. Heck, I wish I had a co-worker like you who could help ME out with one or two of my non-working vintage watches!

What a story! What a workmate you are! You will have to update us with his reaction on Monday. Looking forward to reading part 2. Nice work!!

·

Those watches are awesome but you are awesom-er for bringing them back to life. Well done! 🎯

Yeah I think it’s way more personal this way. Now he has a deeper connection to these watches because of me than if he had just given them to a watchmaker in town.

I won’t charge anything as I didn’t have any real expenses.. it’s my hobby and I have fun doing it, so no need for paying my time 👌🏼

Yeah.. I mean my coworker was even willing to pay the price for the repair… just had the sales in mind.. :(

All I can say is it’s not that hard to learn.. I’m doing this for like two years now in a very irregular schedule.. and with most simple watches I’m pretty confident that I can do it now 😅

Thanks a lot. I really like the look, too 👌🏼

Touching. I bet this coworker will have a newfound love for his watches, even more than the re-spark he felt when you showed the interested then went further and offered to help. He's going to be blown away!

Thank you for sharing that.

I'm loving this new hobby we share, and loving this new community I've found in WatchCrunch, more and more every time I turn around!

·

You’re a great guy! I’m sure he’ll be chuffed!

·

I'd wager @horologybiology would get a kick out of this, given his love for all things Enicar.

·

I want you as my friend👍 Don’t miss to postbthe follow up.

·

Awesome story. Hope your efforts are well appreciated.

·

You da real MVP.

·

You really put a lot time and effort into your coworker's watches, that was very thoughtful of you and shows your true character. You have served another; well done, brother.

·

Wonderful story and you are a wonderful coworker! Well done!

Oooooo Enicar ...slurp..

·

Congrats, 🎉

I think the one on the left is an AR160 or AR1140

The other one is probably an early 1980's cross over when Enicar was unfortunately in it's dying days before getting bought by Hong Kong. I think they were slapping ETA's in there at that point. I might be wrong.

The best days were the 1960's for sure.

·

Great job! Hopefully he comes back to the watch fam

·

You're a champion

But then you just may have corrupted a civilian into the way of watches

·

Good on you for the great work. Love Enicar as well but most vintage look too damn small on my fat ass wrist. You sir, are a gentleman!

·

Great job! You've made another enthusiast very happy! Time to send him the bill for the service. 😂

·

That’s ace……looking forward to hearing about his reaction 👍

·

I’m kinda getting into Enicar and I think I’d like one as my first vintage watch, so I just searched on here and found this post.

It’s extremely wholesome how you had the kindness and skills to help him out. I hope he starts wearing them now instead of the wristcomputer.
