Which watch do you own that you never thought you would?

Heard this question on AFT, thought it could be a fun topic here.

Be it a high end piece crafted of unobtainium by Swiss monks in the hidden temples of the alps, something that you didn’t like at first that eventually grew on you to the point where you had to have it, something that took years and years and years to save and hunt for, whatever.

What watch (or watches) do you own that you never thought you would?

I haven’t gotten there yet, but someday I hope to own a Turn-o-graph as well as a Speedmaster. Anything like that in your list?

Not a one.

I keep my sights low and stay in my lane.

Hahaha well there’s certainly nothing wrong with that!

For a long time, like most in the watch community, I hated the Christopher Ward written logo, whether at the twelve or the nine o’clock position (but especially the nine). I wasn’t too big a fan of the trident counterbalance either and there really wasn’t anything in the collection that caught my eye. I had nearly forgotten about the brand, only hearing mention of them here and there, until they unveiled the Bel Canto. Not my thing but a very impressive watch. I started paying a little more attention to the brand and “doing my research” as they like to say. The logo was changed to just the twin flags and they released the Twelve. Again, not my thing but still a very impressive watch and the written CW logo was gone. Around this time I started looking for a watch to commemorate the birth of my son. Though it had been two years since his birth I’d finally saved enough to buy a “big boy” watch as it’s sometimes called. I spent a lot of time trying to decide which watch to purchase and I kept coming back to CW. I discovered their C63 line, in particular the C63 Sealander Automatic 36mm. To my surprise, I now really like the trident counterbalance, and the 36mm size is perfect in my opinion. For me, it’s the perfect watch, and from a brand I once cared nothing about!

Yup, all of them.

A thirteen year old me would be chuffed to bits to see what I'd accumulated in 40 years.

Woah I see that engraving, is your sons name Julian? I also had a son named Julian in 2021, and am saving up for a “big boy” to celebrate, and have also been considering CW.

All of the watches I own.

Not too long ago I was dead broke, paycheck to paycheck barely making ends meet. Just about scraping by with my wife both of us flat out holding each other down. Fast forward a couple of years and now we are in an incredible position so we do enjoy ourselves (holidays, watches for me, etc) but we don’t forget how quickly things can turn.

I have invested a good portion of money and have a safety net for a rainy day as well. I haven’t been reckless with it!

Thanks and praise to God always.

Never thought I'd own a Tudor - always hated the snowflake hands. But the FXD hits different and now I've softened on the snowflake a bit. Love the FXD and the hour hand is so low it seems to nearly scrape the dial - crazy cool.

·

All the watches I own I can see in my collection. Whenever I end up with something with a solid gold case and bracelet I will be in awe. It’s hard to expect something that fetches 30K- to

Infinity in my life at the moment

·

Maybe this one...im not rich just financially irresponsible ...LOL

I never thought I'd ever own a Rolex or an Omega. I figured I'd never have the money, nor would I opt to buy something as obvious. Here I am though & I consider myself very fortunate to be able to have bought the watches I have. Life can kick you in the whatsits for 25 years & then you turn a corner unexpectedly......

·

I’m not a wealthy man far from it but I was able to obtain my two “grails” . Rolex turn-o graph and Rgm 801-sw COE

Didn't know years ago I would need this wonderful piece as an homage to my inner WH40K nerd. #EmprahProtects

Never thought that I would buy an Omega DSOM, it is ceramic, tiny crown that a small child would have issues with, massively over priced. Not certain power reserve is all that great but it was a purchase based on a whim, I love it, seems to be well respected by gits who would never buy one with their own dollars.

·

Casios. Never thought I would grow to appreciate them again.

Bought the data bank I had as a kid in the 80s years ago for nostalgia purposes and found it almost as cool as back then. Then I wanted one I would actually wear so I got a Casio Royale.

Then a Casioak followed by a 5610.

They are fantastic

·

I have a few: For sure the Casio Oceanus S100. I never thought I would live everything about a quartz analog dial watch. My Seiko Marinemaster 300m. It's just a lovable wristburger of Zaratsu finish, absolutely beautiful movement and Seiko 60s dive history. My Father in Laws' tiny Tissot Seastar. A vintage dream for sure. I never thought I would give away a Submariner & sell a SS and gold and stainless datejust to figure out I love the Explorer II more than any Rolex

Shortly after I started developing an interest in watches I stumbled across a post on Facebook with a rose gold Rolex Cellini Prince, and was instantly attracted to it. I've always liked watches that are a bit more unusual, especially interesting case shapes, and the Cellini Prince certainly fit the bill. I never expected to ever even see one in person, but happened to mention the watch to a friend in the local watch enthusiasts group. Much to my surprise, he had one, and was willing to sell it. Once I saw it in person, I knew I had to add it to my collection. I have almost no occasions to wear a dress watch, but I find myself wearing it around the house, and am thrilled to have it as part of my collection. Up until the new platinum Daytona and the new Rolex 1908 line, it was the only Rolex I'm aware of that featured an exhibition case back to show off a nicely finished movement.

Definitely my SPB121. I love my black Alpinist but I hate green. Then my buddy let me wear this when we were on a road trip and I was hooked after about an hour and bought it from him. Don’t regret it a bit.

A Universal Geneve White Shadow simply because I never thought I would find one in good shape with original mechanism.

·

I've seen the rise of G-Shock in 1983 and I've been among those who mocked the watch «Strapped Brickstone», «Cuckoo Clock on the Wrist», «You will need a counter weight on the other arm to keep your walk upright.» and the like. I ignored Casio and especially G-Shocks completely until mid of 2023. Never thought that I would ever develop interest in any G-Shocks and buying one was unthinkable.

Not only did I get this full metal hammer, this watch made it instantly to the most wrist time 🙈.

Tudor North Flag! Used to not be aware of the brand. 😵‍💫

·

My more expensive pieces. My price ceiling seems to slowly creep up the longer this hobby is going on, with my comfort level increasing as well. When i first started, 200 dollars was as high as i was willing to spend on a watch. Boy that escalated pretty quickly 🤪

Preach brother! Was in the same position 15yrs, and now count my blessings. I never want to go back to that way of living and have been smart about finances, living ever since.

That is my favorite Tudor!

·

Never thought I would own multiple Rolexes.

My how times change.

·

Have owned 3 Rolexes, 4 Omegas, 2 Breitlings. Sold them all and likely won't buy another.

Multiple Tudors, Balls. Only keeper has been the BB58 925.

Have sold every CW have owned.

Gave each of my kids a Sinn and bought myself another. Sinn is by far my favorite brand have ever owned.

In the world of micros, my chosen field to play in, Second Hour, Traska and Nezumi have proven the best for me.
