Translucent Watches. What’s Your Take?

As a 19 Year year old in 1987, I was all in to the New Wave and Techno times of the mid 80’s. So when (in a gift shop in Alaska that my up-to-no-good pals and I were patronizing) I saw this translucent watch that runs on water…I purchased it for its avant-garde appeal. To this day it still comes to life with a squirt of water into its little cells.

Through the years, I have owned several translucent watches as they’ve followed fashion‘s ebb and flow. The Casio and Armitron I own now are a couple of my most beloved examples to date.

Casio continues this translucent light show through the ages with new models to complement G-Shock’s 40th anniversary in 2023. In addition to a clear case, this double-layered devil shines forth a candy-red that makes it not only delicious to look at, but holistically appeals to the senses. I suppose despite my years moving ever closer to a time of walking canes, I will continue to add the likes of these translucent beauties to my collection.

Don't have any. It's hard to see the point. 😉

·

Wait, runs on water?  [LOOKS ASKANCE]

Can't wait to learn how this works!

·

The Armitron is trés cool.

·

I fail to believe that clear plastics are as strong as opaque ones. Furthermore, they tend to discolor noticeably, and unappealingly, with age.

There are times when I like the gimmick, but overall I am against it.

I think they are tiny cells like found in a car battery. It’s crazy. It will sit years in my drawer…I squirt water through the little inlets on the sides…and the dang thing springs to life. It will run for about a week until you need to “recharge” it.

I can appreciate the yellowing caveat, but I still love to be able to see into the soul of it.

Cool until they turn yellow

The reality of getting older I guess.

·

That water watch is so cool! I like translucent plastic things that let you glimpse some of the workings within. I had a Swatch Jellyfish as a kid, but no transparent watches now.

·

Wow, what a cool watch! Learning so much more and this one is different!

Awesome watch! Thanks for sharing!

Cheers!

That transparent/translucent digital watch running on water is rad! 🍻 If I'd seen one back in the day, I probably would've gotten one myself. Twas definitely the in thing! The yellowing of the translucent strap over time is part of the charm. The case of your current water-powered digital actually looks more transparent, and doesn't seem to have been "yellowed" over time. Looks well maintained actually. Did Swatch pioneer such material and trend in the 80s? They sure did a killing back then, and they still produce translucent pieces today. @litoben was gifted one for his birthday recently. Looks really cool. 😎

Every lolly sweet candy shop  Owner shop keeper should wear one for sure !!

I’m of the generation that ended up with translucent tech everywhere. Without going to prison. So I quite like the look.
I do wonder if that watch isn’t so much powered by water, as using it to complete the connection to the battery tucked inside — otherwise I suspect the tech would be more widespread, especially on quartz divers. “Not just good in the water — it drinks it!” Etc.

·

Have just the one. I think it’s cool and different from the rest om my watches.

Yeah, I think it just activates the electrolytic channels which provides voltage.

Maybe so. But some of the most memorable romantic encounters in my life have been with less than stellar-looking individuals.😉

·

Well, there is something to that...I meant no offense ...

Maybe, I don’t have any knowledge of Long Island except that they sell Seiko. Wrong continent for me. I bought mine at my local AD after that the first owner wanted to sell.

Wow! Although I'm even more impressed by how you managed to wear the watch in the first place.

I tie a bow on it while not wearing, so I can locate it without any trouble ☺️

·

What was Armitron thinking? that they might sell out off the shelves?
