Are you a bad influence??

I think alot of us can admit we can get more than a little excited when someone says the words: "I'm thinking about buying a watch" to us. A typical watch nerd's immediate first reaction is to ask alot of questions and provide a long list of suggestions followed by letters and essays on the pros and cons of each suggestion.

This all sounds like we're just a bunch of really nice, helpful people right? Well maybe most of you are, but I will admit, sometimes I can be a bad influence on a friend's wallet >:)

More specifically, I have a coworker who likes watches. But he was kinda casual about it, his most precious watch was an old Seiko mechaquartz dress chrono. Other than that he had a few buget friendly dept store watches, Citizen, Victory Knox, Fossil and the likes. These are not bad watches per se, but I made it my mission to get him to buy his first mechanical watch.

I started slowly by asking him about his watches, why he liked them etc. I even cleaned up one of his bracelets and reset the chrono hands on his mechaquartz because he was unaware of the procedure to do it. Then I started showing him some of my watches, saying "just try this one on" or "did you know...", anything to get him curious. Eventually it turned into "have you seen this sale?" and "thats a good colour on you". I am basically a sleazy watch salesman!

Now let me also say I'm not a complete predator. I know my coworker very well, we've worked together for years, I know he can very comfortably afford a nice mechanical watch. I would not be this intense with just anyone.

I did my best for almost a year. I was starting to give up. He had gone years without a mechanical watch, so why would he start now?! Well, he and I both did not count on Seiko releasing a Sports 5 GMT....and just like that, his will crumbled like a dried out sand castle. In a big way too, he bought a blue GMT and an orange 5KX which I promotly modded for him with a ceramic bezel insert.

That said, karma is real because as soon as I saw his GMT I ordered one for myself :'( ahh....who am I kidding, it was always part of my plan muahaha!

Now he's on a Seiko kick, and with the new Speedtimer releases hes contemplating one more for December. He was worried they were too small (he has a large wrist) which is why I sent him the title pic, I am nothing but helpful.

I now have another watch nerd convert (or re-convert?) at work which is great. Maybe we can hunt as a pack now?!

Am I the only one to stoop to this level? Anyone else out there a bad influence on someone else?

Excellent work brother 👍 I work in a two man crew and my (former non watch guy) colleague now owns 4 watches and has just purchased his own little tool roll for his straps.
Keep up the good work my friend 😎

Sight...

With few exceptions, nobody ever noticed my watches and it has never been the subject of a conversation. That's probably because I'm a strange old fart that everybody avoid.

I think I've made quite a few comments in the past about being a watch addiction enabler. Don't come to me to be talked out of buying a watch. I'm the last person to consult about living a steady, safe life.

A human wants and needs to be a part of various communities. We make families to become a part of exclusive community that shares a lot of your interests. So it is natural to recruit people into your hobby. My wife doesn't share my passion with me, so I look for people who do. It's always nice to meet somebody at a bar and talk about watches (cars, art, electronics, politics etc). Like that we feel less outside and more normal. It's not really bad influence. If somebody doesn't like watches, they don't. If somebody is interested then it good influence to provide accurate, well processed information, so the friends and colleagues of ours don't end up with Vinceros and Fillipo Lorettis on their wrists.

·

im so very excited to hear those sentence "hey i need a new watch, could you help me?" absolutely my man. consider myself being helpful 😂

·

Great job my friend, you have just made our community larger.

I also once show my watch to a collegue of my GF and he told me that he had eyes on Moonswatch - I insist that before pulling the trigger, I could lend him a watch or two so he can decide the first watch as he like.

A week later, he showed up with the 5KX that I wore that day. I tried to calm him down about buying another watch.. And you know what, 3 days later he came with another one, and another one.

I think he has collected 4-5 watches in a month. So.. yeah, another friend I can borrow watches 😜😜😜

Yeah I’m trying to get my older brother to get back in the game but he’s frugal asf..anyways lately he’s been sending me photos of watches he’s been encountering during his travels so I decided for his birthday to give him my Seiko Gmt and he chose the blue one…well always planned to give my GMt‘s as present anyway plus at least I hope it will be worn more than just sit inside the watchbox also he’ll like the gmt complication since he loves to travel. He was originally that got me into watches he had a nice collection before but his house was burglarized and took all his watches since then he never purchased watches as much as he used too..ok enough sad story but yes we influence each other no matter what it might be and that’s part of life…the gMT he chose…

Everyone in my circle knows I have a watch addiction. And they're all curious and I'm trying to convince all of them that Apple watches aren't as good as mechanical watches it's a losing effort tho

·

Watches are such a subjective and personal thing that I avoid recommendations, except in drastic cases. ("No, the Invicta Bolt probably won't look great on your 6'' wrist.") I generally avoid watch recommendations like the plague.  I might "suggest" looking at a number of offerings, but I would never recommend a specific watch.

·

I would never encourage anyone to get a mechanical watch, unless they wanted a vintage handwinder. I'll also be sad when people get rid of their car they've had for 15+ years with 250K+ miles on the clock. I'm very anti-consumerist.

·

I think we can all agree that WC is a beautiful circle of enablers.

·

That’s what friends are for. If you can’t hold on to money because of your watch habits, make sure you spread the craziness to your  friends to it make you feel better. Like the little red 😈 on the shoulder. Good job 👏

·

Predictably - I am the worst. You want x, but you need to consider a - w and then we can start thinking about x

I'm so happy to find a community that thinks like me. You have done your civic duty to land and expand. I have opened my nephew up to a few new pieces and I NEVER say a new watch is a bad idea.... 😉

·

I hear you on that!

Yes - our little Watch Crew has been heavily influenced by my continuous stream of daily wrist checks and sending them articles, images and ads.

I think a few watchboxes have been filled over the past two years from my nefarious daily activity 😉

·

I have a buddy that started out collecting watches. Im already ahead of the game he send me one as a gift and I almost felt insulted once I got it and kept to myself and I still have to dam thing is ugly! Its a fashion brand called American Exchange 20 dollars in Macys and you get a bracelet with that. So I told him send me a picture of his collection he has about 7-8 watches. All cheap no name fashion brands he bragged about these watches like they some high end. He coming down here in two weeks. I got some extra good watches to get him started like Casio and Citizen eco-drive. He gave me straight up advice about men's cologne taught me well. So I do this in return. I'm trying not to be snobbish but the poor guy gotta learn he does not know nothing about automatic, manual, nor chronograph. He's straight up quartz nothing wrong with that. I believe this will open the Pandora's box. I will have a post about this next month.

@hakki501 is my bad influence. But he's also a great strap donor😎

When officemates seek my opinion, the honest ex-salesman in me comes out and we do a wants/needs analysis first then go through options based on their budget. Funny though that some think I'm trying to sell them one of mine hehe.

Hehehe... And, as Jody always says, "You don't have to spend a fortune to spice up your collection."
