Orient vs. Vincero vs. Rolex

A new guy startet at work, mid twenties got a job to support him during uni. When I first met him this week I noticed that he is wearing a watch - a real non smart watch. So obviously, I needed to know what he is wearing. After some sneaky looks I found out that it was an Orient Mako. I said "Nice Orient!" and pointed to his watch. He rolled his eyes and answered that his parents bought it for him. I said that it's considered a good watch for it's price range. He meant that he wasn't happy with it, he thinks about selling it and buying a different watch.

Of course I asked what he is interested in: "A Vincero or a Rolex".

I carefully mentioned that that is an enormous difference in price, he answered that that's not a problem, he has a friend in uni who can get him a Rolex for 500 €. I blurted out "Yeah a fake" but he is sure that these are real.

Dear watch crunchers. Should I try to talk him out of buying a fake Rolex? Or is it more important to talk him out of buying a Vincero?

(excuse the slightly unrelated title pic, it's the only Orient I found in my photos)

Much more important to avoid the Vincero. I'd like the fake Rolex to be a little cheaper but I'd have to see it.

·

Since you don’t have a previous relationship with him, I would say: “Rolex is top notch and that price is too good to pass up.”

·

If you‘ve got to work with this guy, my thought is that you should say nothing at all, except “Nice watch” regardless of what he buys.

·

Youth is wasted on the young.

·

I’d buy him a PS5 instead.

Both are not great, but it’s his choice. You can offer some wisdom, but don’t be surprised if he doesn’t take the bait. At the same time, a bad experience with either is not exactly going to convert him to watch fandom. A fake is never a good idea, so perhaps an homage would work? Vincero I know very little about but I assume is a drop-ship special?

Vincero makes luxury watches at an affordable price. All the kids are saying so.

Ah… affordable luxury, the mythical oxymoron. Can they keep the price low as they avoid the middle man and sell direct to me, the customer? I wonder why no one had thought of that before…

From the sound of it, all this is a lost cause, if he doesn’t like the Mako then he’s not going to like much else.

·

He's not much of a watch guy if he's debating selling an Orient and buying a "cheap" Rolex or crap vincero. Let him learn on his own.

Oh yes!  Their business model is groundbreaking.

I’m having trouble remembering being young enough to believe in a $10k watch being offered for $500. Like why wouldn’t his friend sell them for $5k?  That’s a huge savings and his friend makes more money.

I‘d normally say leave the guy alone, but he’s going to be insufferable if he thinks he’s got a Rolex.

·

I'm guessing this guy isn't an economist, eh?

·

Can't win over a Right fighter, they are way much smartererer the us.

·

I think that it would be for the best if you let him do whatever he want.

·

To be honest, your questions/comments come across sounding like you are a watch snob. He clearly doesn’t know about or have much interest in watches. You should just move on. Telling a non-WIS that their watch is considered “a good watch for its price range” is pretty insulting, in my opinion.

Unless he asks you for your opinion, best to just leave it alone.

·

I don't agree. The guy sounds like he's showing signs of disgust towards the watch his parents bought. And they obviously chose wisely for the money. He also shows he knows little to nothing about watches. Or else he wouldn't want to sell it and get a vincero or a fake or extremely hot Rolex. I would have offered the same info. As I said before, I'd still let him make his own mistakes.

·

It‘s vitally important to keep your opinions and observations to yourself regarding those with whom you work. It protects you from any workplace drama that may result.

·

A fake Rolex is better than a Vincero...A smart watch is better than a Vincero...so there's that...lol. But buy the Orient off him for a great deal of $100, he will think he screwed you over....

·

Just stop speaking to him if you see a Vincero on his wrist, and give him a dirty look once in a while 😂 (Just kidding of course)

·

Turn him onto Hublot.

Turn him onto Hublot.

Nothing wrong with a Hublot Classic Fusion, it’s the modern version of the perennial MDM. You want a luxury sports watch on a decent rubber strap with over 40 years of development then look no further. That’s just a cheap shot.

·

You offered your opinion, and he gave you his response. It’s his wrist and his decision- you should stay out of it.

I think I need to put more detail, he rolled his eyes and said "no, that's just some sht watch my parents bought me, nothing expensive" and I answered that an Orient dive watch is a good watch for what it is, expensive or not.

What's a WIS?

WIS = watch idiot savant. A watch idiot savant or WIS, is a sarcastic term for someone who is absolutely obsessed with watches. Note the word obsessed? This is clearly beyond “loving” watches.  It's used by watch nerds to refer to themselves in all kinds of watch forums.

Heres the urban dictionary definition

don't tell anyone but I actually like the MDM. 😐

·

Probably best not to engage in a conversation with him about watches

·

All I can say about a person who rates a Vincero as equal to a Rolex: God, bless his soul.

Its good for his pocketbook that he thinks that.

·

Let him make a $500 mistake while he's young and can afford to learn from it.

·

If you took every idea in this comment thread and tried to make it into one watch, you'd end up with an enormously big Nixon or Invicta. It's time to plant those seeds into his mind 🤣

·

His wrist his watch!

C’est la vie!

Cheers!

The Vinceros have at least improved a bit over the years (and they did transition over to sapphire for the crystal last or this month). I will note this: there are arguably way better value for money options out there. Vincero may compare to a Citizen or Seiko, at least on a good day (at least the Argo does), but it pales in comparison to a Rolex.
