I'm a Seiko fan... and I own no Seiko

I've had a bit of a sell-off during the past couple of weeks. Some vintage watches I've never regarded as part of my actual collection (as I never wore them, ever), and a few pieces from my day-to-day collection.

And I've sat back now, near the end of the process (have to let a couple go around on eBay for another week to finish the job), and I've realised - with some genuine shock - that I have no Seiko watches any longer.

For a guy who once had a full watchbox of 12, and six of them were Seiko, it's been whittled down over the last couple of years, to the degree that when I sold a couple in this sale, that was it... Seiko no more.

And it made me wonder, do any of you have serious love for a brand, or respect for a brand, or even owned multiple watches from a brand, and then one day you turned around and realised you had none?

It's the strangest feeling!

Yes. I always liked #vostok, but after two of them broke down... they stopped ticking... and finding no value in getting them fixed or serviced, I lost enthusiasm in acquiring them 💸

It's me the same:

I'm a fan of A. Lange & Söhne and Patek...but still got noone in my collection 😪

I started out liking Seikos. But my tastes changed and there were the usual Seiko quality control problems. So I lost interest. But I always liked their dive watch design language. And then I realised it was their old divers I liked. Not the new ones. And the old ones don't have the QC issues. And, at the time anyway, they were cheap-ish. And now I don't wear anything other than old Seiko divers. So, basically, I've come full circle. 😜

Shame! Shame! Shame! Walk around Kings Landing in your birthday suit you will.... 😛😂

Yet you own watches from Casio to Tudor. All those survived, but Seiko did not. I wonder why. Why do you think it happened?

For me, it seems like Seiko is like the jack of all trades and master of none. They have everything in their catalogue, but now that I think about it, I feel like I can pick a better diver, sportswartch, field watch, GADA watch, etc, for similar price points, elsewhere.

I mean the price intervals in which I'm interested in (the lower ones).

Yeah, no seiko here either. Been considering the black dial Alpinist for awhile but my luck with seiko has never been good and I'm a bit gun shy

·

I still have a treasure trove of Seiko's, not at the point you are yet. I don't think I can ever see myself having none. Specifically, because one of them was a birthday present and two days after my daughter was born!

But I can definitely see myself paring the Seiko collection down to make room for others. I tend to have at least one of a brand I like in general, so it will probably stay that way until the end for me.

I like the essence/spirit of Vostok, but I can enjoy them from afar.

I find myself moving up the price scale.

I feel a similar way about Citizen. I respect the brand, and do want a Nighthawk, think their divers offer good value for money, but have never owned one.

I own a beautiful manual wound Vostok - 581096. Rare to pick them in USA. Hope it stays with me for a good 4-5 years

Seikos will always be loved. Why? They hit most price points for most people and they are heavily modded like no other watch because the risk to outcome is the best.

·

I am a fan of their movements only because other manufacturers don't like to sell theirs. Citizen only sell their older models. Although Seiko does not sell their current 6 thru 9 series.

·

Citizen is a brand I love and have none of.

I have 7 Seiko, 6 Casio, 5 Orient and 6 Citizen.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I love Seiko as a brand, and I've loved all my watches. But when it came down to cull the collection, I looked at the divers and thought, "Duro? No way, it's cheap and fun and a bit of a cult watch. My Yema Superman? No way, it's bronze and a bit quirky and a great European independent watchmaker. How about my Omega SMP 300? LOL, don't make me laugh..." And so, of the four divers, the Turtle seemed the obvious one to go. And it's been that way all along. I look at my other watches and I can't justify the Seiko's as much - even though they're great watches. And here we are... I've ditched them all. Not as some sort of grand plan, but just the way the cards fell.

It's not a question of not being loved. I've loved Seiko for decades.

I think I too can relate as I have owned and moved on many Seiko's none remain in my collection, I have found too much to like in other brands offering more of what I want with less of "if only it had sapphire" or if only it had this or didn't have that, Seiko always seems to pee me off with something

·

I thought I was alone, till you came along.

I did the same with Seiko and wanted to clean up clutter.

A while later added a Presage.

Keep going your almost there… feels good 👍
