Back when these were actually tool watches and not status symbols. This is my Dads from 1981. He is on his third bracelet and second crystal. Still runs like a champ…probably been worn everyday for over 40 years…

Yes! So rad. also, does your dad box rocks? 🤣

·

Wow man this is a watch that took some beating

Holy scuffs, Batman!

That is how Rolex meant for their tool watches to be used and look. I love it! That's what my 124300 looks like. I didn't know that it would skyrocket in value. I was mixing thinset and setting tile with it on. I tried to polish it up with my Dremel with a polishing wheel. If I put it on WRUW people tell me how the bracelet isn't lined right and everything. LOL Awesome!

·

F’ing love it! That is perfect.

Rolex showing up at your dad's door...

That watch can tell some stories 🙂

·

Nothing is more beautiful than the stories behind those marks. It earned those battle scars and it's still ticking. Hang on to it forever!

·

Excellent watch

·

Not really into Rolex myself - but I do love the look of this one!

I don´t know why so many people belief that back then Rolex was "relatively affordable, where on earth did you get that fairy tale?.....Rolex has ALWAYS been very expensive.

Perhaps slighly less expensive then today in comparison, but still very expensive, also in the early eighties....and also back then it was already a status symbol.

I started working in 1984 in Belgium and my first salary was around 25.000 Belgian Francs (BEF),(= about 600 EUR/USD).....that was a beginners salary for a civil servant, not a super salary but also not a bad salary.

A new Submariner back then in 1984 was around 60.000 Belgian Francs...so please please stop that nonsens that Rolex used to be affordable...they were "available", but always expensive.

Where exactly in my post did I say it was affordable?

not you, in comments

Damn, what does he do with that watch (I don't suppose he does anything without it)? I don't judge but that's lot of wear on a watch which was undoubtedly very expensive, even for 40 years daily... perhaps a sign he wasn't in over his head when he bought it. I hope is hand is holding up better than those bracelets 😀

That’s hardcore in a Mad Max sort of way just oozing with adventure street creds. It deserves some good stories to go along those battle scars, perhaps something akin to surviving a plane crash, blown up oil rig, my Land Rover hit a mine, doing battle with Smaug, etc.

Your dad is hardcore!

Bzilla

Your dad is hardcore!

He is that for sure...haha

·

What a lovely watch. 🍻. It’s always better to have a battered piece, that experiences life and is still ticking, than a pristine example kept in a safe.

They were never cheap watches, but today’s prices are more expensive than they used to be. My 1986 Oyster Perpetual would cost at least $1K more than what I paid for adjusting for inflation. Of course, when I bought it, there was no waitlist.

Like the well used look!

·

Whoa, if Ernest Hemingway had been a watch. Seen it all. Been there, done that. Battle scars, war wounds. Could really take a beating.

That’s what it’s all about! Love to see it 👏

What the watch was designed for…..to be worn and used. excellent piece of history shared, unfortunately a lot of Rolex’s nowadays will not have the same stories

I'm not sure I totally agree. I bought my first Rolex in 1978 - an Explorer II (1655) from an AD for $850 USD. About a month's salary for me back then when I was a kid making 10 to 12 thousand a year. Unless you are making six-figures today, a new Rolex is considerably more. They were expensive, yes....but not STUPIDLY so. 😉🤣

yeah, off course it always depends on how much you make how expensive it is for you, for me in the early eighties, with a beginner salary it was just impossible to buy one....in the link below you can see some price evolutions from that period....you´ll see that a lot of models went up with 60% if you compare 1978 with 1984 (like your explorer)...that´s a huge increase in "only" 6 years....some models went even up to 80 % since 1978.

That's a great chart! 😎👍

The best looking SUB i have ever seen💯🔥

The stories that watch could tell. So cool to see one that’s been used for what it’s meant for! I’m sure it’ll take the next 40 years in stride 🤘🏼
