Torn between two watches

I've been scouring the web as you do and thinking about my next purchase. I wanted something significant and not blow my money on a couple of micro brands or a handful of Seiko's and the like.

So I went back and looked and the Longines which now comes in a 37mm with a more respectable lug to lug length. The price is reasonable for the brand and the watch at $3600 AUD but I've always had the Tudor on my radar, specifically the Black Bay 36 with the blue dial which is only $500 more. When I say $500 more it's still a decent junk of change and I could buy a Seiko or something else with it but I think the extra dollars is worth it given the brands history and quality. My only gripe with the watch is the power reserve of only 38hrs as apposed to the Longines 72hrs.

Do you guys own either watch or both and what are your thoughts on either, or maybe there's another one that I'm missing. I looked at the Heritage Ranger but the size put me off. I wanted something from 36mm to 39mm max. I already own some larger watches, so it would be nice to have something a little smaller for a change.

Go try them on if you can. You may be surprised what you like or don’t like after seeing and trying on a watch in person. There are a lot of blue dial watches out there. If you like a cheaper one (like Seiko sharp-edged series) then go for it. don’t feel obligated to spend a certain amount or get a certain brand. Judge a watch based on quality for money. If you like a cheaper but still good blue dial watch, ask yourself if you think one of these watches is worth the extra money to you. Only you can answer that question.

There is a 36mm IWC pilot’s watch you may want to consider.l that costs a bit more new but you may be able to get on the grey market for less.

Luckily there is an AD store somewhat close by that I'll be visiting to see the watches in person. I had looked at the Seiko Sharp edge line up and from all the reviews I watched and from the post I've seen they have an amazing looking dial and a great size. This will be my last big watch purchase for the year unless I win lotto or the pools or something else comes up, so I wanted it to be a watch that will stay in my collection and not just be a substitute for a watch that I really wanted. I've done that in the past and lost money by ending up flipping the substitute watch, so I want this one to stay.

I'll have to look at the IWC line up, it's a brand that I've considered in the past but all the models I liked were to large for my wrist, but I may have to pay them another visit and see what comes up.

Thanks for the comment and the suggestions, they are always welcome 👍

If you can get over the stars on the dial (as it affects some people) I'd go the Longines 😊

My 2 cents worth Tony 👍😂

Even though I really like the Tudor, I'd go with the Longines too (but wish they'd ditch all the stars).  Looks like you are going to try them on. Hopefully, that will result in a clear winner. Good luck.

·

Could wait and see if Tudor starts doing the Black Bay 36 steel models with in-house movements and without the crown stem like the new S&G for this year. If that was the case, Tudor would be my pick. But, if you can’t wait on something that may or may not happen, I’d go Longines.

·

I’ve got the Tudor 41 which is a lovely watch but that Longines also looks the part can’t go wrong with either.

·

For the money the Tudor has more brand appeal and better resale. Price out the used versions to see how much. Everyone falls out of love with the lust watches from time to time. Both brands are known by watch people but Tudor is known by everyone.

·

Your choise. My only 2 cent is that I have the 40mm Spirit. I think it is a fantastic watch. Don’t worry about the stars. They are classic Longines and a plus. Good luck with your hunt👍

·

For me it would be the Longine, but I know others have recommend other watches. So I wondered if you've considered the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander? Sometimes it's nice to have something on the wrist that is from a lesser known watchmaker and it's at a good price.

I agree, so much so that I already have one in the collection. CW are great watches and I recommend them to everyone 👍

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

I actually like the star’s on the dial, they are there for a reason, to indicate that this is one of their high end pieces, represented by the 5 stars ⭐️ which they have used for years and years.
I’m hoping to get to a AD and try one on, I’m looking at the 37mm.

Thanks for the input 🙏🏻

So true my friend, that was something I was considering while comparing both watches. I do like the simplicity of the dial on the Tudor, so much so that I modded my SKX009 to replicate it somewhat, I didn’t change the hands, I thought that would be too much, but I do like how it turned out.

Great mod my friend, great little watches those Invicta's and they deserve more love 💯

I'm a vintage Tudor Submariner guy from way back, but I much prefer the looks and pedigree of the Longines over that Tudor.  It's a real beauty, and a worthy descendant of the brand's deep history of beautifully detailed watches.  I like the five stars.  The Tudor in question is a bastard child trying to ride on the coattails of a long-past legacy as an affordable Rolex.  Design-wise, the lume plots on that Tudor are too big, and they clash with the snowflake hand-set.

I also like the fact the Longines has a nicely integrated date window, while the Tudor is a non-date which is nearly always a deal-breaker for me.  Date is the most useful complication - I use it almost every day.

Just my two pennys.

·

Short of trying them on, I would pick the longines. I think it has plenty of brand heritage and it's a heck of a value package. I also prefer the look a bit.

I like Longines and think that you get a lot of value for the money.  If you are leaning towards the Tudor please watch this YouTube post from someone who had a very bad experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKQGm5bZPNM

Thanks man. I actually watched this video and the other two that followed it, he thankfully got a new watch and the customer support he deserved, also a handful of goodies from the AD manager to show that they do care about there customers.

I was shocked that a watch at this price point would have such QC issues, but then again who knows if the issues didn't arise due to miss treatment at the store, we will never know I guess.

I'm normally very fussy when buying watches, especially sinking this much cash into something for my collection, which I'm trying to reduce down to 6 watches, not easy I can tell you. But whatever I buy will be looked over with a fine tooth comb. Who knows I could walk out of the AD with something else, which is known to happen 😂

Nice dilemma !

I own the BB36 for two years on my 16cm wrist. A pure all-round watch. Screw down crown. She is with me everywhere and it is my beater. Water, sand, sport, office.

But the best I have found out : she is really well finished.

I feel the BB36 slightly more sportier than the Longines.

Happy choice and Greetings from Belgium

Cheers, literally for sharing your experience and thoughts my friend. Enjoy your cold beverage 🙏

I would go with the longines 37 mm, I think it's a gorgeous watch but I can't find it anywhere to at least try it on, they announced it a few months back but still nothing.

I've search and found an AD store not far who hopefully has one in stock that I can try on, they also have the BB36, but also whether they have one in store when I rock up is another question. The Longines seems to be the crowd favourite here as far as the responses I've read but trying both on will be the deciding factor I'm sure.👍

That's good, it's great that you're trying on both, but most importantly, congratulations on your new watch!

Any time. I like the Longines btw, am sick of seeing the Tudor BB.

About the Longines, the one version of the Spirit I don’t like is the one where the date window butchers the 3 numeral in half. It should never have been allowed off the cutting room floor. The 40mm is nice, and the larger Zulu Timer with the Fifty Fathoms-esque bezel is sublime.

The Longines seems to be the crowd favourite here and only when I try them on will I decide, I could buy the Longines online and save myself a few hundred but it definitely is one of those watches I would like to try on before pulling the trigger.

Here's a couple of Smiths I found on the Bay, not being an expert like yourself on the brand I would value your thoughts, if and when you find the time.

Cheers mate, take care and stay safe 🙏

I quite like this one, but as to their true value?

·

Definitely try them both on if possible and see how they feel but for myself I'd go with the Longines.

·

Out of the two, i would pick the Longines. However if it was up to me, i would probably wait it out and stretch for a used BB41 Heritage or BB58. Also 70hr PR.

·

Tudor by far for me. Higher end finishing, brand, more versatile and fits the wrist much better. The Longines has long lugs and more casual design.

·

Any update on the watch you ended up buying? My vote was for the Longines.

That’s my biggest gripe about the longines  😂. Fair play.

Nothing so far, I’m waiting for a chance  to go and try them both on, being to busy at work unfortunately 😩 As soon as I do everyone here will surely know about it. It will be my wrist shot of the day for a week straight 🤣

Cheers mate 🍻

Haha I'll wait for your pics

·

More than design, I would focus on size preference here.  The Tudor at 36mm will wear very small and if that’s what you prefer then no matter how much better the Longines is (by the way it’s way better) you will not enjoy it because the size will bother you.

·

I saw and held a tudor in person it looks amazing even better than what you see in pictures as a tudor fan I will be bias toward the bb36. The black piece in the crown is annoying but you don’t notice it as much. And for the second option, this longines watch is lovely but I think the dial is a little bit too busy with the chronometer stars
