Is Cartier a legit watch brand? I think they are!!

Cartier started being a jewelry brand and not long after started making watches. Do you consider Cartier a legit watch brand or still just a fashion brand? I think their definitely a legit watch brand! Just curious what the WC fam thinks.

Popularizing the mens wrist watch has to count for something 🤷‍♂️

·

Oh wow. We haven't had someone question Cartier's legitimacy as a watch brand for ages!

I'm curious to see if anyone still thinks they aren't a legit watch maker 🤣

What does the OP say?

·

As they made arguably the first wrist watch for Alberto Santos Dumont I'd say they're not just a watchmaker, but far more!!

·

Louis Cartier sees a tank in 1917 and designs a watch based on its shape. Cartier is still selling the Tank watch 106 years later.

·

Cartier is 100% legit luxury watch brand. They have the history and prestige.

·

Curious to know why some would consider it a fashion or jewelry brand. They’re the number two selling Swiss watch company behind Rolex.

I wonder what women think about Cartier? Do they see Jewelery brand first or watch brand first? 🤔

You got me there.

I feel confident that non-watch ladies (and very likely non-watch men) would associate them with jewelry first.

·

How can you be on Watch Crunch and even ask this question???

The Tonneau is from 1906, the Santos 1904. You can still buy them.

Facts!

Cartier is damn serious about watchmaking.

Fashion watch is a watch from a recognisable brand, that isn't involved in watchmaking. Cartier is REALLY involved in watchmaking.

You're chronoguy and you don't have a Daytona? Jk. But seriously, would you try one at retail if you could? Do you like the look?

I have had the opportunity and have passed. I find Daytonas a little bit dainty for my wrist. They are at the lower end of the spectrum of my range.

I would probably go for an El Primero Daytona if I could find one in great condition at a reasonable price. That's probably the only one I'd really want.

My wife has pestered me to get the "John Mayer" green/gold Daytona, but it seems too obvious to be wearing that one.

Quite honestly, I'd probably go for a vintage 1957 Speedmaster before buying a Daytona...that was the Daytona's daddy.

I’m actually kinda sad that the solar beat is quasi discontinued.

I was not aware.😬

Yes, that's true. It wears small.

The el primero Daytona would be sweet. Your wife is "pestering" you to get a watch, let alone silent acquiescence, and you still said no?? Man, you are one lucky guy.

·

I don’t think they are still a fashion brand, because they never were a fashion brand. They are an iconic watch maker - with a history and some classic designs to rival anyone!

I think it's a ruse so she can buy more jewelry and handbags 😉

This would be my choice Zenith Daytona if I had a spare million hanging around...

Although I think I'd want it on a nice bracelet instead of the strap.

In fairness, that list has Richard Mille above JLC and VC.... I think that makes it inadmissible as supporting evidence.

This is a list of the export value of watches reported to the Swiss government. This means that RM exported a higher dollar amount of watches than JLC or VC. It’s not a subjective ranking of watchmaking credentials.

Longines is above JLC and VC too but only because they sell a metric shit ton of watches at a pretty decent price compared to the lower volume and high prices of the high end brands.

Cartier is reasonably priced but they sell enough volume to beat Omega’s revenue.

·

The poll results speak for themselves. I love Cartier, their heritage and classy approach.

·

At this point, I don’t even understand why somebody considers the legitimacy of Cartier as a watchmaker? They have classic icons that are more than 100 year old

·

They’re legit, with a ton of horological pedigree; not to mention the Cartier Masse Mystérieuse stole the show at last year’s Watches & Wonders. I only wish they’d upgrade the PR in the in-house movements used in their Santos line — it’s subpar compared to the competition at their price points.

·

I think lean towards a jewelry brand 🤔

·

I was not aware.😬

I’m hearing conflicting stories, but the solarbeat it only available in one size (small) on the Cartier website and I also heard those are hard to come bu due to supply chain issues.

·

The only people who call Cartier a "fashion" brand, are salty Omega fanboys when they found out that Cartier outsold them for the first time in 2021.

·

Fully aware of what it is. Sales volume isn't a measure of how good something is; Toyota dont make better cars than Rolls Royce.

·

My introduction to Cartier was by buying a watch so I would have to say no. I see them more as a Watch and Jewelry brand, not sure about fashion. To me Fashion brand means clothes, something they’re not.
