Christopher Ward's trident

Probably a question for the Christians in our community: does the trident on some of CW's watches disturb you or does it keep you from buying the watch?

Around here (Western Europe) the trident is very much associated with the devil, it's a well known satanic symbol. Not sure how it is in the rest of the world tho. Not a Christian myself, it's just a question I had on my mind for a while now.

I understand that CW (most likely) uses it as symbol for Poseidon/Neptune, to give its watches some deep sea diver association.

I don’t mind the trident but for me I really dislike their logo! That makes CW no go for me.

I think it looks fine, personally never thought of it as satanic, always got the nautical vibe. I wish more companies did interesting counterbalance designs on the second hand. There are a few hand set designs I dislike and do stop me buying one of their watches but not saying as dont want to offend because a fair few on WC ! 😂

???.... I see a trident, I think Greco-Roman mythology. And haven been in the Navy, we have tridents everywhere; ship, plaques, uniform items, etc.

As for biblical references, I also thought it was a pitchfork and I can't recall any verses that mention pitchforks or trident. I always thought this is just an artistic image appropriated into popular belief

I’m firmly of the belief that taking offense is addictive; and there’s someone, somewhere, who’ll find a way to get offended by almost anything

·

As a Christian (pastor's kid even), I've never even thought of it in that light. Just seemed like a minor nautical detail that I'm not really a fan of for entirely different reasons -- I don't like dive watches.

·

Poseidon predates Christian beliefs by about 1000 year. Poseidon = sea CW wins.

I think the logo is clever, works very well on the 12. Do you know it’s the 2 flags, Swiss and English?

·

I would never have made that connection in a million years.

A trident is not a pitchfork, and even an actual pitchfork absent a cartoon devil never crosses my mind as a satanic reference.

Here you'll get more "pearl clutching" from a post about Rolex or a king wearing a nato strap than religion

·

I very much doubt the CW executive are closet satanists hiding in plain sight, a la Polanski's classic, Rosemary's Baby 😂. Definitely a symbol from sea mythology and should not offend anyone.

·

I like it. It has classical associations with me as an American more so than demonic.

·

Its a symbol of Poseideon! Monotheists always amaze me. I'm guessing they really don't like deviled ham.

I was much happier with the logo once I was told what it was, and not the 8-bit space invader that had fallen over that I originally thought it was.

·

Honestly like it more now that it’s associated with satan 🤘🔱

I propose that we as watch enthusiasts have a duty of care to each other.

Watch enthusiasm can be quite a lonely thing. We're misunderstood and we love these marvellous machines a little too much. We agonise over the tiniest details that 99% of the world simply would not notice from an inch away, let alone normal sane distances. And when we get too deep and overthink, it's probably a good idea to warn each other. Just for our own sanity.......

Be warned!

THANK YOU! But I can't unsee the 8-bit image. 🤣

Sorry. 😂

"‭‭As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today."

This Scripture from Genesis has always reminded me not to be bothered about these kind of "symbolic" things because it's not gonna do anything even if you want it to. If you believe in a sovereign God then don't let that little trident bother you because what can it do to you?

·

No problems with the trident but that watch logo has to go🫤

·

Trident fine, logo fine, massive hour hand... not for me.

·

36-40 but I do have 42 as well

·

If I was a Christian I could see the connection but is the trident canonically/offically something the devil has in Christianity?

As a Muslim, I’ve chosen to overlook Veneziancio watches as they feature a cross.

For what it's worth. I own the blue version and LOVE it.

IMO they have bigger design problems besides trident

·

As a Christian, that thought never crossed my mind. I've always seen it as a nautical themed trident, as opposed to a satanical inspired pitch fork, which isn't a Biblical view of Satan, regardless.

·

Growing up in Canada, I have never really associated the Trident with the devil. I suppose as part of Halloween costumes but when I see a Trident I immediately think water.

·

No. Not really. I live in the Bible Belt and our high school mascot is the Red Devil. There is an old mural painted on the far wall of the gymnasium of a very Satanic looking devil carrying a large Trident/pitchfork. Doesn't bother me a bit. I'd wear this.

·

I think the trident is designed to evoke a nautical / sea-faring sensibility. I wouldn’t worry about the satanic stuff - you can probably find such elements in many designs if you really want to.

I don’t like CW watches myself, but I wouldn’t go so far as viewing them as satanic. Just a bit boring ☺️

·

I love the Trident, the logo, and the watches. I presently own three, but have previously owned many more
