Used Vs. New Watches

Happy weekend fellow Crunchers! In this post, I'd like to ask a question of y'all: Do you generally buy your watches new, or look for used examples?

For me, I really only purchase new watches in two instances. Either when buying microbrands (less used ones on the market), or with budget watches (Casios, Timex, etc.). For my higher dollar purchases, they've all been used. Part of it is that I like a lot of the older/more classic designs, and would rather buy vintage over vintage inspired. The photos in this post are a few of the used/vintage watches that I've personally purchased over the last year.

I wrote an article about my experience buying used/vintage watches online, as I've bought far more used timepieces than new ones. https://www.primerpeak.com/how-to-buy-vintage-watches-online-2024/

So what's your take? Buy new, or look for a good used example?

Thanks! That Vacuum is a pretty unique piece, glad to have been able to find it.

I can't find one in the condition that I want for the price that I am willing to pay. The Vacuum was ahead of its time.

I share your penchant for classic and unique models, so I rarely even look at the new watch market.

I got very lucky with mine. The seller had pretty poor photos of it on eBay, but I could tell that the watch was in good shape. It went for far too cheap, and I ended up with mine (coming with the original box and a receipt) for just under $190.

Since I prefer vintage I usually buy used watches, or watches that look like they’re 50 years old at the very least.

Love me some vintage watches! For me, it's always fun to do all of the research into an old watch when looking at tracking one down.

I know this winter when I’m hopefully out of debt I’m looking forward to spending the winter looking for a perfect Omax Spaceman. I never heard of them until two weeks ago and now I must have one.

I hadn't heard of it until your comment. That is one cool looking watch!

I only buy new, for the simple reason I know nothing about the inner workings of watches and movements to trust they are 💯genuine. I know AD’s have that’s added security but they have been known to be duped but some undesirables with Frankensteins

·

Nice watches! Ive only bought new so far but ive been only looking to buy used. I like the idea of buying somthing that represents a period of time well or a neo vintage at a great price

·

I too mostly buy pre-owned. I bought a few new watches from boutiques, but realise that my tastes change and I can’t afford to accumulate. So for me, that extra £1k spent on the boutique experience hurts, and is t worth it. I’d rather buy and sell good quality pre-owned.

·

I haven't bought many watches. My first round collection will end up most likely all new. But once I jump a tier in price, I'll probably have to start looking used.

·

I don't buy new, both because 99% of new watches bore me, and vintage watches are more exciting in general.

Also "used" watches is a hilarious way to put it to me

Same same

It has certainly been a mixed bag for me. I am pretty good friends with a local authorized dealer so I have been fortunate enough to get some really good prices on new watches. I still only buy new when the potential resale value is pretty close if not a little more than what I am buying new since I tend to buy and sell A lot of watches. I would say overall though I probably buy new 30% of the time and secondhand either buying or trading 70% of the time. It keeps me safe financially so I’m not losing too much anytime I buy or sell a watch.

·

I tend to only buy used but if I really like the watch and I’ll keep it forever then new. Like I bought a Solar Quartz new because I didn’t want a beat up one that’s second one. Greta post

I almost only buy used unless its a microbrand. Much better deals to be had on the used market plus many of my favorites were discontinued anyways

·

I prefer buying new at any price point.

·

I generally buy new if I can but I am not apposed to used. That being said sometime you have to go used if the watch you want is discontinued or your are going vintage.

·

I purchased a T-touch from my boss that I knew he never wore because he couldn't figure it out. I currently have the bug to buy a Spinnaker SP-5092-11 that is no longer being produced. I found it on ebay and I have the option of buying it new from Amazon UK. I think I am just going to buy it new.

·

Since I'm more of a vintage collector, I generally buy used, as BNIB/NOS examples are generally really hard to find, or so horrendously expensive.

I buy a lot of watches used as well. As long as I’m familiar with the brand/watch. So many fakes are getting pretty good now and it’s getting harder and harder to tell. Although when it comes to vintage /neo-vintage, there’s no other way than buying used. Unless in new old stock

·

I haven't bought a used watch, but understand why anyone would do so. Plenty of used cars in my past that's for sure. Of course when you reach a certain price point, watches become "pre-owned".

I'm a vintage guy through and through. There's such huge amount of styles and brands to choose from regardless of price. The only problem is that there is always a model that catches your eye and you can't buy them all.

·

Used 99% of the time. It lets me buy nicer watches for the same amount of money.
