Are logo aesthetics important to you?

I just watched one of Jody's videos about a new Australian micro brand.  There was a lot to like about the watch, but the brand's logo on the face just looked cheap to me and as a result it is enough for me to say "no thanks".  I could just be super-OCD, but if I'm being honest I would have to say brands' logos do influence whether I like a brand or not.  And I can think of some mainstream brands that leave me cold too and have probably influenced my disdain for particular watches despite their specs.  Can you look past a bad logo?

Well, I already have, according to many Crunchers. 😅 I have a number of Islanders in my collection and the logo is divisive, to say the least. Some have even said it is the logo that keeps them from getting an Islander.

This one is even more polarizing because it has TGV's logo in the bottom half in addition to the Islander logo in the top half.

I really don't see what's so offensive about the Islander logo. After all, it's just a circle and a triangle. Two things that show up prominently on many beloved watch dials.

Anyway, I'm pretty forgiving with most logos, even if they're not my favorite. But some are more off putting than others. I'm not really a fan of the new Christopher Ward logo (but it wouldn't stop me from buying one).

·

The Christopher Ward wordmark logos turned me off of them.

I've said that before, but I'm not sure how true it really is since I really never had the opportunity to actually buy one.

With the new logo (still not great, but passable), the Moonglow & Bel Canto though, I find myself letting go of that dislike.

I watched Jody's video and it's a darn nice looking watch and MAN you get a lot for $375 bucks.

I rarely care about the logo.  Christopher Ward has had like one nice one out of the five or six I've seen.  There new one is horrible, IMO, but it doesn't matter much to me.

Edit:  Funny three of us have already mentioned Christopher Ward...

I agree.  No issues with it whatsoever.

·

Yes, logo aesthetics matter, but they’re way down the list.

·

Probably job-related, but I care a lot about logos (and brand names, for that matter). A badly-designed logo just ruins everything for me. Which is odd, as I'm usually haughtily against displaying brands and logos on anything wearable. Still, with watches it's the same as with cars I guess, without a logo or brand name there's something amiss. And since it sits smack dab in the most prominent place, it annoys me at first sight if not well done.

My favourite logos are the Longines' flying hourglass, and Panerai's OP.

·

A logo is part o the design — and I do hate shoddy logos in general.

·

The biggest factor for me when buying a watch is the design. The logo is a part of the design.

If the logo results in the design being unappealing to me, then I'm not buying the watch.

What I don't get is some of the logos people like to dislike for some reason.

For instance the Islander logo that has been mentioned here already. I don't see anything bad about that logo. It's just a generic shape like a lot of logos.

·

Of course it matters…. We buy an item with our eyes, we won’t buy something we find objectionable.   now to what degree it matters and what each of find attractive vs repugnant is all individualized.

·

It's part of the design... So yeah?

·

Yeah, I'd say it's a dealbreaker for me but there are also other factors like the clasp. It's sort of a thing for me. I can love almost all of the watch, and then see the clasp, and the idea of purchasing it just fall apart for me.

I've been looking at a Christopher Ward for a while but can't seem to pull the trigger. Not sure what's bothering me at this point since they changed the logo, but man something is saying...

Short answer is no, I can't look past what I perceive to be a bad logo.

Longer answer, for the Hautman watches, I think the logo looks much better on the aviator watch as it matches the numeral font better and looks OK on the sport model.  I think it looks awful on the burnt earth model, but then again I think that whole dial is rather flat and off putting.

·

To be honest - I like a good logo, but I can live without.

In the 40s and 50s, most brands just stuck their text on the watch:

Before that, sterile dials were very common:

The watch is everything: look, style, size…

It all depends really. I think a good logo is everything nowadays as people don’t really give much thought about anything, but it’s not the be all and end all. I still see microbrands rock the lack of logo: Baltic, Dan Henry, anOrdain, Balthany… if I had a brand, I’d probably make sure I get the name and the text down and maybe then the logo. Then again, some names are just daft: I have a 1940s watch that‘s just branded “Waterproof”, it might as well be called “Watch” or “Get Wet”. Actually that last is a bit risqué, maybe not. Beautiful watch though:

I think the Rado anchor spinning is amazing

·

Is it just me or are there others who think there is something incredibly masculine about the IWC logo, which is ultimately just the letters IWC?

I know of no other logo that works as masculine as IWC....well at least in my opinion

·

The logo, typography on the dial and proportions are super important, especially for a >300$ watch. That's the result of my professional deformation

I like the Marc's logo, and TGV's.

Zelos I could take it or leave it. It's detailed enough that it doesn't feel lazy. But the circle looks a bit odd I guess. A nicely designed "Zelos"would be much nicer

Yes , I couldn't wear a watch with just a Z as the logo. To much like putin's  war symbol.

Ah yeah that would suck.

That reminds me. There's a big Chinese brand that has a logo that looks a lot like a swastika.

And a German brand that's named after a Nazi airship.

And some of the seagull chronographs have the communist red star as the logo.

And I'm sure there were some others I avoided for similar reasons.

·

No more or less than the 12:00 marker on a Speedmaster

Or the Ballskin Diver.

·

Generally I don't feel strongly about logos.

I'm actually quite a fan of the Orient crest but not sure if that is because I'm a fan of the make or that was part of the reason I like the brand?

I have a Phoibos Apollo arriving for Christmas and I canbsay that the distinctive Octopus/Kraken logo first drew me to the brand. On that basis I suppose I must say that logos are more important than I first thought!?

·

It's good to know I am not the only one that feels this way. I find it very hard as much as I like the look of the watch the logo can turn me off. I do love a face with its brand and WR or "Automatic"  on the dial but, if that font or logo doesn't grab me I struggle more on my buying decision.

·

Of coarse, it matters... I bet dollars to donuts Rolex doesn't get to its level without that crown on the dial lol.

I know I already posted but I just found the all time winner/losser just out on Kickstarter. And not only is the name and logo ridiculous for a dive watch, Its another dive watch!!

·

There are definitely ugly (older, swirly San Martin logo) as well as nice ones (i personally like the Rotary logo very much)

It does affect the overall appearance to a huge degree imo, so it better may be well thought out.

Actually according to an interview with Mike France of C Ward, they've only changed it three times. And moving forward their new watches won't say Christopher Ward in text anymore, it'll just be the twin flags logo.

If they only changed it three times, that means they had four logos.  I said five or six mostly for effect, but clearly I was WAY off.

They had it as CHR Ward London at top, Christopher Ward at the 9, Christopher Ward and the 12, and the newest one (The flags or whatever)...and those are just the ones I remember right off the top of my head.

Doesn't change the point though, way too many logos in a short amount of time and, for me at least, only one that looked good.

Makes sense no more Christopher Ward on the watch, since he is no longer part of the company.

Right, I wasn't contesting your point, just providing some info with some loose references to support it.

It’s all about opinions. I prefer the words Christopher Ward than the current twin flags logo. To me it looks amateurish and I read somewhere on here that it wouldn’t look out of place on the side of an ambulance.
