I just declined the call - Am I mad?

I’ve been waiting on an Explorer for a while. I finally got the call today.

Caught me on the hop a bit.

Long story short - I panicked and declined. I’m meant to be focussing on my Aquanaut. I’d love an Explorer one day but not sure if I need one today.

Is this a sign of growing up? Or maybe a sign of madness?

What would you have done?

P.s. it was my nemesises at watches of Switzerland - so at least I am keeping my promises to not darken their door.

·

sign of old age, called dementia !!

😵😂

Or some

Call them Maturity !!

·

Way to boycott Rolex for their ridiculous retail practices 😂. Stick it to the man.

·

Now if it has been a Green dial OP 36 I don't think my wisdom / morals would have extended that far!

Same!! Plus I have no morals 😂🤪

·

Remarkable discipline and self control 👏🏻👏🏻🍾🏅

·

You're not mad. I also don't think it reflects on your maturity one way or the other. You either didn't want it enough or just preferred to use the money in other ways.

·

I don't like this model either.

I really like the model. But I’m trying my hardest not to buy ALL the watches

·

Oooh - I’ve been on the list forever for that. Laings not WoS. So it’s not me getting the lucky call 🥲

Hopefully one comes your way soon..

·

Madness for sure.

·

Makes sense to turn it down if you'd prefer an Aquanaut. It's a Rolex, they'll still be making them in 20 years when you get another urge to buy one.

·

I’m not the next in line. Bummer!

·

If it isn't your grail, then it doesn'tt matter. It won't itch the aquanaut scratch. For many people the explorer is their grail. Just goes to show you are on a whole other level!

·

If your heart in not into it then your money should not go either.

·

I'd have declined, and then spent 5% on a Lorier Falcon III.

Oh wow! I was expecting to wait about a year and had resolved to spend the money on a new Grand Seiko mechanical/auto - model TBD - around Christmas/New Years if no call by then.

I have a GS spring drive and quartz and a GS movement trifecta collection is a long-time goal of mine. But GS will have to wait for another time. The Explorer has been my grail for longer than any watch you can name.

I think London is especially bad for high demand. I’ve heard of people getting explorers v quick.

Buy it then make it work financially later 🙂

I’m on the list for an explorer, but I think there might be more things I like about the older reference. So I might have to do the same…

I put my name down for a 36mm so don’t know what happens now , I don’t want a 40mm watch ( 6” wrists )

·

I might have said yes to a 40mm but not any of the previous generations. (7.5 inch wrist) That being said I’m not sure I would wear a Rolex even if I had one. I have been in love with the polar 16550/70 since I was a teenager and always told myself “one day” but now that I could theoretically make it happen the brand (and the watch) has lost its magic. I really dislike elitism and that seems to be all Rolex is marketing these days.

Good answer - I like the way you think 😂

·

I’ve been on the AD’s waitlist a while for a DateJust 41. In the meantime I’ve purchased two Tudors from the same AD. He called me about a year ago to ask if I’d be interested in a Tudor 925, but I respectfully declined. He hasn’t called or returned any of my emails since.

Same. I’m sure they will continue to offer the 36. I’m on the fence about the year though.

Glancing at my Sub’s lume today in a dark hallway…the lumed 3,6,9 would be pretty nice…can’t decide

·

I think you did the right thing. If you want the Aquanaut, then that's the thing to focus on. Your only other option would have been to buy it, and flip it, not necessarily for fat profits, but perhaps to put it in the hand of a mate who might want it... if you have any mates who might want it, of course.

So that's about it. I think you did the right thing, all told.

·

I’ll generate much hate (plz close ears team Rolex)

Smort! people have talked up that and similar models into mythical status. It’s a basic black dial field watch, and a little boring. If you want a field watch get an Alpinist (200m WR!) a Boldr or a Formex so you at least a nice colorway 👍

It's a Rolex...I would have passed. Well done!

·

It’s a Rolex. Are you mad or a Martian (think Danny Deveto in Mars Attacks)?

In any case, it will be a longer while now if you ever get “the call” again.

BTW, I never thought I would become a “Roli-boy” but I have. Now if Amy would just get those Air King links in.... 😂

·

As a little follow up. With the money I saved on the explorer - I was able to buy something truly special which crossed my path.

https://www.watchcrunch.com/Justingalore/posts/a-pocket-watch-for-a-king-from-the-jeweller-of-kings-34590

So I see this new purchase as a bit of a reward for exercising some discretion earlier in the week.

I wpuld say that the acquanaut and the explorer have the same appeal in terms of wearability so if you are bot sure about it you mafe the right choice.
