Setting Watch

When it comes to automatic and mechanical watches, do you guys always set it to the proper time or do you just leave it as is? I leave it as is because I just like to appreciate the watch and I have my phone to look at the time. I would only set the time for quartz watches.

C: Some times I do. Some times I don't

I fail to see why one would buy a watch to not set it, bracelets are cheaper and have more interesting designs.

It's your money/time, but it seems like buying a hammer to wear as a pendant rather than to use as a tool.. Sure it can fill the role, but it's better suited to it's intended task.

Occasionally don’t bother with the date but why would you wear a timepiece showing the wrong time?

·

I’ve got to set it to the second

Okay, so, judging from the comments, I think I need to explain myself a bit. This watch was given to me by my sister for my 21st birthday so it's a special watch, to me anyway and I only wear it on a few occasions. The reason l don't wear it daily is because I live in a dangerous area where stuff could be stolen at anytime. So for me, personally, I don't see the point of setting the watch if I'm only going to wear it at special occasions. If it were a quartz or digital watch, I would decide to set those because those are much more accurate and once you set it it's a one and done deal. So yeah, there's my explanation.

·

I set/check mine daily - accuracy is important to me.

Genuinely fail to understand why anyone would wear a incorrect watch - at that point it's just jewellery 🤯....but if it brings you joy & happiness, that's the reason we're all into the hobby, & more power to you 😁👍🏻👍🏻

I do not set it to the exact seconds like some, but to the minute, absolutely. How would your sister feel if she found out the gift she gave you was being used ornamentally vs. the intended purpose?

While the chances of you having your watch noticed is slim, it will look silly if someone does notice, or if asked the time, you have to make the extra effort to pull a phone out. No one is so busy they cannot take a few seconds to set the time. Enjoy it for what it was made for.

If I'm just wearing the watch at home or changing watch throughout the day, I usually don't bother setting the time and date. I have clocks everywhere in the house. I just like wearing my watches.

If I'm stepping outside, I'll set the time and date to the second before leaving home because I use my watch to read time rather than my phone.

·

Depends, are you talking every day or when you notice you are out by half a minute?

·

If it's not worn then it sits in the box unwound. So each time I pick it up to wear it I have to set it, somewhere within a minute if true time.

Currently as I go through my rotation I'm noting how far out it is at start of the day and then again the following morning to get a rate, I tend to do that every year

·

I set it but not to the second like some. My lifestyle allows for +/- 30 seconds lol.

·

I only set the right time on mechanical watches when I wear them, all my Quartz lineups are happily doing their thing. I don't have a watch winder so sometimes give them a shake - it you are talking about setting up the time itself when wearing, like many collectors I would set it to the exact time - I would use one of my many radio controlled watches to configure the mechanical watch correct, and set the moonphase If I wear my Frédérique Constant

·

I am very curious if the OP is talking about a watch on a winder that has drifting off a minute or two, or if he's just grabbing a stopped watch with some haphazard time display and rolling with it. The former is not necessarily insane behavior. The latter would annoy me to no end and I'd feel foolish to be caught doing this.

I always set my watch one to two minutes fast. I hate being late.

Well said! Your watch is for telling the time. You can glance at it on your wrist - or pause and lovingly admire it 😆 - whereas your phone is surely in your pocket.

For those of us who grew up pre internet and mobile phones, a watch that was set accurately was essential for being on time for lessons, games, work etc. I still think it is

·

The follow up poll should be on setting the date.

I set both the time and date — otherwise I will not wear it. I will occasionally put mine on for a few minutes before changing it, but that’s the extent of it.

·

It takes less than 30 seconds to set the watch and it’s kind of the charm for me. The winding and the routine every morning. I never considered not setting the time

·

I'm always watch the time on my watch never on my phone

·

I set it to exact time but then I leave it. I like to start at 0 deviation but as I wear it I don't care too much about accuracy until it's more then a couple of minutes off. This means that I reset my daily wear about once, maybe twice, a month.

·

I enjoy looking at my watch, but looking at a watch with incorrect time because I couldn't be bothered to take 2 minutes to set it correctly would take the enjoyment out of it for me.

·

Always set it. Prefer a fast watch, so I can easily hack it daily to the correct time by just pulling out the crown. Time.is is one of my most used websites

·

I don't understand why you'd skip something that takes at most a few seconds to do. Setting the time on a watch isn't that labor intensive or time consuming. If you're happy wearing a watch with the wrong time on the dial though, have at it! You be you!!

·

If it's off by more than a minute or two, heck yeah I'm setting it! I actually use it to check the time, so if it isn't close, it's just jewelry. I prefer my jewelry to be useful too.

·

If I'm wearing a watch I'm making sure it's right first. I want to confess that I have actually a standard time widget on my phone screen, but I also have a second, smaller time widget that culls the time from the official time.gov server so that I can set my watches without actually going to time.gov.

·

What a bizarre question. I've never come across anyone - until reading this thread at least - who, having bothered to wear a watch, doesn't have it set to the right time. I'm honestly gobsmacked 'it's a thing'.

·

To each their own, I always set the time. I don’t always set the date, but I do set the times.

·

Man, I would feel like a complete tool if someone asked me for the time and I had to pull my phone out of my pocket to answer them. 😂

·

I don't even understand the point of wearing a watch if the time isn't correct. 😭

My browser "new tab" page is time.is simply for setting watches.

·

Thats why i have quartz and solars to not bother about setting or batteries if i need to grab and go. Otherwise, setting time and date is part of the charm of wearing mechanicals

·

I set the time but I think it's great to just enjoy the watch and appreciate it. That's whats great about my vintage watches as I know the time won't be accurate but I can look down and feel that I am a part of it's history!
