[Prove me wrong] - Best watch for non-watch collectors

So, I was having some thoughts about the classic theme of "presenting a watch for non-watch collectors" and my conclusion was that we have no better watch to present to someone than the SBGX2XX line of GS.

Here are  the reasons:

  • Mechanical movements are atrocious for every human being that doesn't like watches. Its impracticality has layers of inconveniences. The opposite of that is the amazing F9 movement;
  • It is the most versatile watch you can find. Shorts and sandals, no problem. Blazer and leather shoes, sure!
  • Reasonable price for a watch. It costs around 2.5 apple watches and it will last you for a lifetime, not until the next apple keynote.
  • Discrete and fits all ages.

And bout you, if you have to present a good watch to someone outside our circle, which watch should you present?

Dude, I'm sitting here wracking my brains to come up with some other options, but none come close to what you've presented.  I mean, at first glance...  GS for an outsider?  What are you?  Crazy?  But, the more I think about it, it's crazy like a...

Good points! I didn't know these came in BLUUUUEE 💙 I did consider the cream dial at some point, but got that covered with my vintage Omega ☺️

The one I had was like a cartoon watch, it's just so watchy!

·

Great points, However, I’d counter non watch people love looking at movements. Who among us didn’t start similarly? I’d posit a GS SD is the way to go.

Hmm... I'm all about the Spring Drive, but I'm not sure it works for the scenario described. Someone not into watches is not going to get what makes it special. "It's as accurate as quartz!" "Um, then buy a quartz? 🤷‍♀️" "Except it runs down every three days if you don't wear it!" 😶 And there's all the servicing meshugas, etc., and it costs a good sight more.

That’s a fair point, but it has multiple party tricks. Check out the display back case with the gorgeous movement. Also, this sweeps better than anything Jay-Z sings about.

I hate to be the wet blanket here, but are you guys nuts?  You’re going to buy a GS for somebody who isn’t even into watches?  What happened to regular Seiko or Casio or Citizen or Timex?

I‘m glad you guys like your friends that much, but I’m not buying a non-watch person a GS. I don’t even have a GS, and I LOVE watches.

·

The only three goals I can think of for a non-watch enthusiast to buy a watch are to accessorize, tell the time without internet, and to symbolize status. For the first two goals, I think anything over 200 bucks is an impossible sell. Maybe a nice Vincero, MVMT, or G-Shock. For status symbol, the best watch for a non-enthusiast would be the Rolex Submariner.

·

A non-watch person won't pay 2k for a watch, unless it has obvious bling like gold, etc. There's already a great option for them, it's called the fashion watch, which slowly gets them into the hobby and turns them into watch nerds like us.

·

My next watch it think if ever I find that’s not out of stock

·

I was thinking the same thing, but maybe the NJ0150-81series. Its fun, Oyster-esque, an automatic with a display caseback, and pretty versatile. I like the yellow dial one myself (and the green, but who’s counting?).

Image

I think a Grand Seiko is a bit steep, and obscure for a non-watch person, and they might not appreciate exactly what it is unless they were into watches, which is the paradox. To be honest, if you bought anyone who was not into watches a Rolex I think they would be ecstatic - so that might be the easiest answer. I’m also speaking from experience because that was what I bought my father and he then went a bit watch mad.

Maybe a Cartier Tank? Most non watch folks will like it cuz of the brand and its quartz?!

Honestly. If I wanted to hook someone on watches and they owned an iPhone, I'd suggest an Apple Watch. Much more potent than a mechanical as a gateway drug,

A $100 eco drive Citizen is all they'd get out of me and then they would have to be a close friend 🤣

I would, but I’m pouring all my energy into getting @JaeBust to adopt me.

Hey join the line buddy, there's a lot of us standing in line here for that gig 🤣

Thank you! Which non-watch-collector spends 2-3k on a quartz watch?

Unpopular opinion:

The best watch for a non-watch-collector is either a G-Shock or an Apple Watch (or the like), but certainly not a 2200€ quartz Grand Seiko. Fight me.

·

No, I think at least 2 more weeks. I only got them this early because I was afraid there’s be some supply chain nonsense and they’d say I couldn’t get them until March. I really wish They weren’t wrapped so I could take mine out and play with it.

Maybe on the Apple Watch, but not the rest; then again, maybe an Apple Watch is the way forward and we are in the wrong. Perhaps it is inevitable. Maybe I should buy a Connected and just take up golf like other chaps my age.

Good arguments indeed. This GS model is simple, beautiful and has one great movement, however... I still really like the Omega package!

I really think that the Seamaster AT has one of the best movements on the market, I mean: can you name any problems with this movement? Super accurate, eats magnets for breakfast, 150 m of water resistance, absolutely simple and beautiful dial... come on!!!

I have the model 220.10.41.21.03.001 and I must say that I use it every day and for all situations! I still love other models, from other brands, but I don't know why this IS THE watch.
I have already bought other watches after this one, but the AT always ends up on my wrist. I feel like I should sell all my other watches and just keep my AT.

Based on the replies - consider yourself proven.
min all seriousness I wouldn’t go GS for a non-watch person. what would I go for? that depends on the individual but still I doubt it would bring me round to GS for some of the reasons stated above.

·

I have given more Tissot than any other brand.

The latest was to my 74 year old mother.  I got her a ladies’ two tone automatic.  She had been complaining that her quartz watches kept dying.  I gave her a quick introduction to automatic movements and the function of the rotor through the clear case back.

She loves it.  She wears it daily.

Agreed if a non-watch nerd is looking for a well made watch and is up for the cost.

Don’t forget the SBGX295 (JDM sleeper model in the same family, with brushed, darker indices and hands, and an incredible white dial—less white than the 259, more of a pearl white with guilloché from the center out).

Yep - like this line. And I think any watch line that has a similar design principle would be a rock-solid choice for many.

I'm also thinking the 38mm Aqua Terra line from Omega (with the horizontal lines). I used to own an AT...man I miss it!

Grand Seiko is too costly for nonwatch folks methinks. Those who CAN afford Grand Seiko will probably not want one, because it has Seiko in the name. Sorry, don't shoot me, just telling it as I see it. Nonwatch people would probably buy an Omega or, better yet, a Rolex if they're willing and able to splurge.

For the less financially blessed, I think around 300 to 500 USD will be a good budget to have. I would recommend a Tissot. It has a "marketable" name to go with its history, it's reasonably priced for what it is, it's Swiss Made (those magic words).

Most people I know don't bother with wearing a watch. Those that do are more likely to wear a smartwatch of some kind. In my opinion, the probability that these people will get any interest in any kind of wrist watches regardless of style or price is equal to the probability that they will start collecting stamps.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that the only way to convince someone who is not interested in watches to start wearing one is to present an irrefutable proof that this will make him or her incredibly attractive and will improve their sex life by orders of magnitude.

Wait. Let me get this right: you mean to say watches don't make me attractive? What the hell am I wasting all this money for?????
