Oddest reasons for not buying a watch?

What is the oddest reason you've given or heard for not buying a particular watch brand?

I want to be clear, I don't want to initiate a circular firing squad here. Please keep replies polite and general, not giving away the identity of the original poster.

There are two I remember. First, someone said they wouldn't buy a brand because they had too many retail outlets, which somehow cheapened the watch. It seemed to me that this was saying, "I won't buy from a brand that has created an extensive chain of outlets to sell their product successfully."

The second was when someone said they wouldn't buy a watch because the company pictures of their products had the watches placed on a rock, potentially (but not necessarily) damaging them. This indicated that the company had no respect for their product, and, therefore, neither did the potential buyer. This is the one that inspired this post!

Orient, because of their logo on the dial. Great looking watches with better value than Seiko, but the logo is just so ugly to me.

Same reason I won't buy an "Eastman" guitar.

I looked them up and I see what you mean 😂

Right? They may be great sounding guitars, but why not just put "Made in China" on the headstock? Sounds much less derogatory than "Eastman"...

"San Martin" and "Pagani Design" because they're just branded fakes.

·

Grand Seiko. Only because it has Seiko in the name. I know I know. I’m horrible and a snob. For the record, I do own a vintage Seiko. I just don’t believe the name Seiko warrants the prices Grand Seiko is going for.

·

Classic example Tudor… Poorman Rolex 😅

·

Anything with "hesalite". The exception is a Speedmaster.

Lexus is just "Grand" Toyota so...

Of no complaints of Rolex writing novels 🤣

·

I know this may change over a period of time. But I like the idea of one day getting a very impressive collection of VCs, Pateks, Lange, so on and not having a single Rolex in my collection. Hence why I have yet to buy a Rolex. Nothing against the brand, just love the idea of being the ultimate hipster or snob, depending on how you look at it. 🤣

For the price a Lexus goes for I wouldn’t buy it either.

Not really that odd. Do you know of any "odd" reasons for not buying watches?

·

Because it didn't have a Cyclops. (I made that up but it would be odd)

·

Probably not an odd reason, but I've been hesitating to buy Vostoks because the designs I want have military insignia.

Politics aside, this isn't exactly the best time to be sporting Soviet-looking watches out in public in the US I think.

·

Blancpain because it’s English translation is “white bread” and just thinking about white bread has me reaching for the Gaviscon.

·

I won't buy a Rolex because of the AD game playing involved.

·

Date window execution. Either make it noticeable and purposeful or skip it. Or slanted tucked into a corner. It just kills me.

Agree completely

I know a guy who refused to buy JLC because he doesn’t want to wear a watch he can’t pronounce…

Person 1: "Hello, I have a Jaeger-LeCoultre!"

Person 2: "So sorry, I hope that's curable."

Okay, seems like a valid reason.

There are folks on this site who will only collect one watch from any one brand. I have never understood this thinking. If I like the design language of a brand, why not have more than one?

Not buying a brand due to numerous stories of abominable after sales service and terrible quality control. Brand shall remain nameless as I don’t wish to ruffle feathers. 🙂

And you think that's odd?

·

Long Island Watch because of the logo, tbh. But I'm warming up to it because their customer service is impeccable.

·

This may be truly odd, but the Patek Nautilus for it's ugly "wings" or the Aquanaut for it's Seiko King Turtle dial. I just don't get what all the hype is about.

And you think that's odd?

These days with internet reviews making or breaking you yes 🙌

·

Hated the logo!

Cheers

·

I'd buy most anything Clarkson didn't like! 😜

Listen. If the 7 has an extra angle on the top. Miss me 💯

I would struggle to bring myself to buy a Tag Heuer due to Max Verstappen being an ambassador.. it’s daft, I know, but I really don’t like him.
